SUMMARY:World Affairs Lecture Series: Unbroken: Solidarity Through the Lens with Professor Nina Berman
DESCRIPTION:In this virtual World Affairs Lecture\, Columbia University Professor Nina Berman will be in conversation with Dr. Souzeina Mushtaq\, assistant professor of Communication and Media Studies at University of Wisconsin–River Falls\, on the topic of “Unbroken: Solidarity Through the Lens.” \nLifelong New Yorker and photojournalist Nina Berman draws on decades of documenting the city’s defining upheavals. From the depths of the AIDS crisis to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy\, the surge of COVID-19 and waves of protest\, to illuminate the moments of collective care that rise amid crises. With a curated selection of photographs\, she reflects on how New Yorkers forge bonds of compassion and mutual support even as neighborhoods transform. Berman weaves personal recollection with powerful imagery to reveal that resilience and community are as fundamental to New York’s identity as its skyline. Her work has been exhibited at more than 100 international venues from the Whitney Museum Biennial to the concrete security walls at the Za’atari refugee camp. Public collections include the Smithsonian National Museum of American History\, the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, the Museum of the City of New York\, the Harvard Art Museums and the Bibliothèque nationale de France among others. Berman is the recipient of a 2025 Guggenheim Fellowship. \nThe Department of Social Sciences’ World Affairs Lecture Series fulfills FIT’s mission to foster an understanding of diverse cultures and politics within the international as well as domestic perspectives. It also embraces\, supports\, and expands upon the president’s campuswide initiative on civility. SUMMARY:'96 lbs. of Dynamite': A ReelAbilities Film Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this free screening of the new documentary film 96 lbs. of Dynamite\, followed by a Q&A with people involved in the film moderated by FIT Film and Media Professor Emma Ben Ayoun. This screening is part of ReelAbilities Film Festival 2026\, a festival celebrating disability-focused media worldwide. \nAbout 96 lbs. of Dynamite\nWhen filmmaker Loren Goldfarb first notices Chad “Shorty” McDaniel in a Florida pool hall\, he underestimates the man using the motorized wheelchair\, until Chad starts winning. A lot. “96 lbs. of Dynamite”  follows Chad\, a witty\, fierce pool player born with brittle bone disease\, as he battles low expectations\, discrimination\, and physical barriers on his journey from a rural Mississippi upbringing to high-stakes amateur tournaments out West. As Chad confronts personal loss and life-altering choices\, the film presents an energetic\, humorous\, and deeply personal portrait of a man who\, despite being told he wouldn’t survive childhood\, refuses to shrink his life\, or his ambition. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:FIT Archives Salon: Collecting Sub Cultures—Goth and Japanese Lolitas
DESCRIPTION:For this third FIT Archives Salon event\, FIT Professor Summer Lee will be in conversation with Charlene Fossum to discuss the small collection of underground media\, including magazines like Propaganda and Carpe Noctem\, which she collected in her youth and recently donated to the archive. Charlene and Summer will discuss how underground media unified goth and dark subculture in the 1980s and 1990s\, and explore its implications for contemporary scholars. \nSummer Lee is a fashion historian who holds an MA in Fashion and Textile Studies from FIT\, where her qualifying paper was an exhibition project titled Emo: Spectrum of Subcultural Style. She has been teaching at FIT as an adjunct instructor since Fall 2023 and currently teaches Youth Subculture\, Identity\, and Fashion: A Sociological Perspective in the Social Sciences Department. \nBorn and raised in suburban Philadelphia\, Charlene Fossum became interested in goth subculture as a fan of British new wave and synthesizer-based music in the 1980s. Collecting magazines and catalogs was a way to keep abreast of alternative culture\, and to share the styles\, music\, and interests with members of her local alternative community. She later became interested in Japanese culture and comics in the late 1980s\, and began collecting manga\, as well as culture and style magazines in the 1990s. Fossum attended the School of Visual Arts from 1990 to 1994\, earning a BFA in illustration. She married in 1996 and came to reside in Brooklyn where she works on various personal projects of embroidered textile art and pointillism illustration. She donated her magazine collection to FIT’s Special Collections to ensure it would be accessible for subculture studies. \nThis event is free and open to the pubic. \n REGISTER ON EVENTBRITE
