ARTSpeak: Arthur Simms

Artist Arthur Simms will discuss his artwork and life experience in this ARTSpeak lecture.
Simms (b. 1961, Saint Andrew, Jamaica) is based on Staten Island, NY. His art is a product of biculturalism, a merging of his Jamaican heritage and American education, and is rich with associations to his hybrid autobiography, American and Jamaican folk culture, music, art history, and world culture. His work has been exhibited extensively nationally and internationally. His commissioned sculpture, A Totem for the High Line, was on view on New York’s High Line from August 2024 through July 2025. His awards include fellowships from the Emily Harvey Foundation, The Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program, and The Joan Mitchell Center, among others. His work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen LOK in Switzerland and Karma Gallery in L.A., among many others. He received both his BFA and MFA from Brooklyn College.
The 2025–26 ARTSpeak lecture series is presented by the Department of Fine Arts and been made possible by a generous grant from the Susan Daykin Fine Arts Department Fund.
This event is free and open to the public.
