SUMMARY:Exhibition: Art X Fashion — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Wales Bonner X Kerry James Marshall\, cotton t-shirt reproducing Lost Boys: AKA Black Sonny (1993) by Kerry James Marshall\, spring 2023\, museum purchase\, 2022.55.1\nFebruary 18–April 19\, 2026\nSpecial Exhibitions Gallery\nThe Museum at FIT \nArt X Fashion is a major exhibition exploring the entangled and shifting relationship between fine art and fashion—typically considered a “decorative” or “applied” art. Curated by Dr. Elizabeth Way\, curator of Costume and Accessories\, and featuring 140 garments\, textiles\, and accessories from The Museum at FIT’s permanent collection\, this exhibition traces fashion and art’s parallel aesthetics from 18th century rococo to late-20th century postmodernism. \nUtilizing the theoretical framework developed by art and fashion historian Dr. Christopher Richards\, Art X Fashion invites viewers to consider the much-asked question\, “Is fashion art?” through historic and contemporary examples. Further themes explore the overlapping art-and-fashion work of artists—such as Salvador Dalí\, Sonia Delaunay\, Kerry James Marshall\, Antonio Lopez\, and Pablo Picasso—and fashion designers\, including Hussein Chalayan\, Issey Miyake\, Paul Poiret\, Elsa Schiaparelli\, and Vivienne Tam\, as well as the ways artists use fashion to shape their identities and expand their cultural significance.

SUMMARY:World Affairs Lecture Series: Unbroken: Solidarity Through the Lens with Professor Nina Berman
DESCRIPTION:In this virtual World Affairs Lecture\, Columbia University Professor Nina Berman will be in conversation with Dr. Souzeina Mushtaq\, assistant professor of Communication and Media Studies at University of Wisconsin–River Falls\, on the topic of “Unbroken: Solidarity Through the Lens.” \nLifelong New Yorker and photojournalist Nina Berman draws on decades of documenting the city’s defining upheavals. From the depths of the AIDS crisis to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy\, the surge of COVID-19 and waves of protest\, to illuminate the moments of collective care that rise amid crises. With a curated selection of photographs\, she reflects on how New Yorkers forge bonds of compassion and mutual support even as neighborhoods transform. Berman weaves personal recollection with powerful imagery to reveal that resilience and community are as fundamental to New York’s identity as its skyline. Her work has been exhibited at more than 100 international venues from the Whitney Museum Biennial to the concrete security walls at the Za’atari refugee camp. Public collections include the Smithsonian National Museum of American History\, the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, the Museum of the City of New York\, the Harvard Art Museums and the Bibliothèque nationale de France among others. Berman is the recipient of a 2025 Guggenheim Fellowship. \nThe Department of Social Sciences’ World Affairs Lecture Series fulfills FIT’s mission to foster an understanding of diverse cultures and politics within the international as well as domestic perspectives. It also embraces\, supports\, and expands upon the president’s campuswide initiative on civility. Find an archive of previous lectures online.  \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; login details will be published closer to the event date.

SUMMARY:'96 lbs. of Dynamite': A ReelAbilities Film Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this free screening of the new documentary film 96 lbs. of Dynamite\, followed by a Q&A with people involved in the film moderated by FIT Film and Media Professor Emma Ben Ayoun. This screening is part of ReelAbilities Film Festival 2026\, a festival celebrating disability-focused media worldwide. \nAbout 96 lbs. of Dynamite\nWhen filmmaker Loren Goldfarb first notices Chad “Shorty” McDaniel in a Florida pool hall\, he underestimates the man using the motorized wheelchair\, until Chad starts winning. A lot. “96 lbs. of Dynamite”  follows Chad\, a witty\, fierce pool player born with brittle bone disease\, as he battles low expectations\, discrimination\, and physical barriers on his journey from a rural Mississippi upbringing to high-stakes amateur tournaments out West. As Chad confronts personal loss and life-altering choices\, the film presents an energetic\, humorous\, and deeply personal portrait of a man who\, despite being told he wouldn’t survive childhood\, refuses to shrink his life\, or his ambition. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
