SUMMARY:Exhibition: Renewal of Symbols: Contemporary Minhwa Paintings — Closes
DESCRIPTION:August 25–December 16 \nMinhwa is traditional Korean folk art from the Chosun era (1392-1910) painted on paper or canvas in a simplistic but expressive style executed in bold colors. Translated as “painting of the people” or “popular painting\,” it is often the work of anonymous craftsmen and shows figures from folk mythology and legends\, symbols of happiness\, wealth and health\, and scenes of everyday life. Minhwa is known for expressing its emotions using symbolism\, optimism\, humor\, and satire. DESCRIPTION:ARTSpeak presents its 2016-17 exhibition and its accompanying catalog\, which takes its name from this year’s theme\, The Presence of Art History in the Artist’s Mind. The theme explores the impact of art history on the contemporary artist’s studio practice. The exhibition is a collaboration between select Fine Arts students working in third-year studio courses and a committee of students in the Art History and Museum Professions bachelor’s degree program. \nThe Fine Arts students have created the works on display; majors in the Art History and Museum Professions program curated the work\, created the catalog\, and installed the exhibition with the guidance of faculty members in the Fine Arts and History of Art departments. \n\nThe interdisciplinary ARTSpeak program\, presented by the departments of Fine Arts and History of Art\, also includes a series of artist lectures\, classroom and studio visits\, and panel discussions.\n\nThe exhibition is on view from April 4 through 28.\n\nARTSpeak is funded in part by the FIT Student-Faculty Corporation\, the School of Art and Design\, and the School of Liberal Arts.
