SUMMARY:Exhibition: Elizabeth Hawes: Along Her Own Lines — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Hawes\, ivory\, purple\, and lavender striped brocade evening dress (detail)\, c. 1936\, USA\, gift of Mrs. Dudley Schoales\, 69.156.6 Elizabeth Hawes\, multicolor cotton\, handknit man’s jockey shorts (front view)\, 1964\, USA\, gift of Barnes Riznik\, 88.65.3 Elizabeth Hawes \nMarch 1–26\, 2023\nGallery FIT\, The Museum at FIT \nElizabeth Hawes: Along Her Own Lines is the first contemporary exhibition dedicated to the gifted American clothing designer\, author\, and labor activist\, Elizabeth Hawes (1903–1971). The show opens at a crucial moment when Hawes is especially relevant\, because her activism and innovative philosophies correspond to the concerns of today. Hawes criticized the exploitative\, classist nature of the fashion industry and sought to revolutionize it in her own creations\, and through her writing and unionization efforts. She created gender nonbinary clothing and encouraged women to embrace their unique bodies with an open-minded positivity that was ahead of its time. Hawes further used writing and journalism to challenge the fashion industry from the inside\, and called for people to think consciously about what they wear—with words that remain influential. \nRead the full description on The Museum at FIT’s website. \nThis exhibition is presented by students in FIT’s Fashion and Textile Studies: History\, Theory\, Museum Practice MA program.  This program builds knowledge in fashion and textile history\, object conservation\, and exhibition theory over the course of two years. During their second year\, students utilize the interdisciplinary skills they have acquired through the program to collaborate with The Museum at FIT\, developing and installing an exhibition of fashion objects from MFIT’s collection. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Asian Americans in New York Fashion: Design\, Labor\, Innovation — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Vivienne Tam\, dress\, spring 1998\, USA\, gift of Vivienne Tam\, 98.50.1\nMarch 2–27\nGallery FIT \nAsian Americans in New York Fashion: Design\, Labor\, Innovation celebrates the Asian American community’s diverse contributions to the fashion industry. The recent rise of violent\, racially motivated attacks against Asian Americans in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic has shown the need to increase support and awareness around the complex narratives and expansive achievements of this community. New York City is a fashion capital with a large and diverse Asian American community whose members contribute to every aspect of fashion production\, from manufacturing to creative design. This exhibition does not attempt to represent the entire Asian American experience; instead\, it highlights the depth and variety of Asian American design through object-based analysis. The exhibition examines topics such as labor and process in addition to exploring design motivation. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public; visit the exhibition webpage for details.

SUMMARY:2019 Annual Creative Technology and Design Exhibition: #DESIGN — Closes
DESCRIPTION:November 19–December 14\, 2019 \nGallery FIT\,  The Museum at FIT \nPomerantz Center Lobby \nWe are living through a fundamental workforce transformation during which digital technology has begun to alter the skills companies are searching for. Inspired by President Joyce F. Brown’s Workforce of the Future initiative\, FIT’s Advertising and Digital Design BFA\, Creative Technology and Design (CT&D) subject area\, and Center for Continuing and Professional Studies worked closely with our industry partners to create a series of specialized credit courses and noncredit certificate programs that are career-driven and forward-thinking. In addition\, CT&D also initiated a wide range of guided experiential learning (GEL) projects and career development events in collaboration with some of the most well-known companies and brands in the world. \nTo celebrate the eight-year anniversary of the CT&D subject area\, this year’s annual exhibition\, #DESIGN\,  showcases some of the most exciting industry collaboration projects and award-winning design projects. CT&D’s mission is to initiate a transformative journey for creatives worldwide so they can enter some of the most rewarding careers in the age of digital media. We believe designers are innovators\, activists\, and visionaries\, and our goal is to nurture the next generation creative workforce that will design digital content\, products\, platforms\, experiences\, and other solutions that leverage technology to solve business problems and to improve people’s lives. We believe the year of 2020 will be the beginning of an exciting new phase of our Creative Workforce of the Future initiative. \nThe exhibition is co-curated by professors C.J. Yeh and Christie Shin. \n#DESIGN is on display in Gallery FIT\, located in The Museum at FIT\, and in the lobby of the Pomerantz Center. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: X-RAYS of Balenciaga\, Chanel\, Dior\, and Givenchy — Closes
DESCRIPTION:February 6–16\, 2019 \nX-RAYS of Balenciaga\, Chanel\, Dior\, and Givenchy is the result of a collaboration between the students of FIT’s Fashion Design MFA program and The Museum at FIT. The project is part of a course titled “Fashion Creation 3—Design Archaeology\,” which centers on the concept that in order to move design forward\, it is of utmost value to know where it has been. \nThe students were divided into four groups\, and then each group was tasked with producing a replica of a couture garment from a leading fashion house: Balenciaga\, Chanel\, Dior\, or Givenchy. The original garments\, housed in The Museum at FIT collection\, were carefully researched by the students. In addition to creating the line-for-line replicas\, the students gained a deep understanding of the brand’s heritage. They then developed a contemporary\, technology-driven collection. \nThe display of process-based design work highlights each student’s personal development\, resulting in a fully realized look and an advertorial that completes their vision and projects a new direction for each house. \nThis exhibition is open to the public.  \nThe Museum at FIT hours:\nTuesday–Friday: Noon–8 pm\nSaturday: 10 am–5 pm\nClosed Sundays\, Mondays\, and legal holidays

SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Italian Way\, Lessons From the Masters for Our Time — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Image courtesy of Megan Brady.\nOctober 20–November 10\, 2018 \nThe Italian Way presents paintings and sketchbooks created by students who were participants in FIT’s month-long study abroad program in Florence\, Italy. The students—sophomores\, juniors\, and seniors—are from the Fine Arts\, Illustration\, Packaging Design\, and Graphic Design departments within the School of Art and Design at FIT. The goal of the study abroad program is to build a bridge between the art of the Italian Renaissance and these young\, contemporary artists. \nStudents were taught to paint with egg tempera\, the medium of choice for many Renaissance artists. Egg tempera was then used to create all of the paintings in this exhibition\, though students were not required to produce a finished painting. Instead\, it was important that they experience firsthand what the artists of the Renaissance did to create their masterpieces. Through the process\, students gained a better understanding and enhanced appreciation of the work and the craftsmanship of artists during 15th-century Italy. \n
