SUMMARY:Exhibition: Untying the Bow — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada\, dress\, white silk taffeta with hand-painted yellow dots\, spring/summer 2014\, Spain\, gift of Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada\, 2014.44.1\nMarch 1–24\, 2024\nGallery FIT\, The Museum at FIT  \nUnassuming as they may seem\, bows have played an indispensable role in securing garments and accessories for centuries. Experience their allure in Untying the Bow\, an exhibition curated by graduate students in FIT’s Fashion and Textiles Studies MA program. Discover the ubiquitous influence of bows in our lives\, transcending shoelaces to become a subtle yet powerful element of personal style. \nUntying the Bow is an exploration into the utility and symbolism of this pervasive element of clothing. This exhibition invites visitors to explore the rich history\, symbolism\, and enduring charm of bows in fashion. It unfolds in three thematic sections\, beginning by tracing the bow’s origins and delving into its form and function for utilitarian purposes. The next theme is the bow’s symbolism as a marker and subverter of status and gender. Finally\, the exhibition examines how the symbolism of bows in fashion has evolved into abstract forms and patterns. Experiments with scale and technique allow bows to transcend their original form and become captivating motifs. Untying the Bow is a transformative journey\, unraveling the hidden narratives and cultural expressions that have elevated the bow from a mere structural element to a timeless icon in fashion. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Love Thy Neighbor’Hood — Closes
DESCRIPTION:“The Luxury of Knowing Me\,” by Toluwani Adesanya\nJanuary 24–February 11\, 2024\nGallery FIT\, The Museum at FIT \nWhat is a home? How do we view the communities that shaped us into who we are today? \nFor Black History Month\, students from the FIT Black Student Union present Love Thy Neighbor’Hood\, an exhibition that illustrates the dynamics of home and what that means to each artist. From an outside perspective\, many predominantly black neighborhoods are viewed as dangerous and scary places\, where nothing good ever comes about. These artists are challenging that narrative through their art. The exhibit features works of varying mediums created by people of a wide-range of backgrounds across the diaspora. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

The show opens at a crucial moment when Hawes is especially relevant\, because her activism and innovative philosophies correspond to the concerns of today. Hawes criticized the exploitative\, classist nature of the fashion industry and sought to revolutionize it in her own creations\, and through her writing and unionization efforts. She created gender nonbinary clothing and encouraged women to embrace their unique bodies with an open-minded positivity that was ahead of its time. Hawes further used writing and journalism to challenge the fashion industry from the inside\, and called for people to think consciously about what they wear—with words that remain influential. \nRead the full description on The Museum at FIT’s website. \nThis exhibition is presented by students in FIT’s Fashion and Textile Studies: History\, Theory\, Museum Practice MA program.  This program builds knowledge in fashion and textile history\, object conservation\, and exhibition theory over the course of two years. During their second year\, students utilize the interdisciplinary skills they have acquired through the program to collaborate with The Museum at FIT\, developing and installing an exhibition of fashion objects from MFIT’s collection. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Asian Americans in New York Fashion: Design\, Labor\, Innovation — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Vivienne Tam\, dress\, spring 1998\, USA\, gift of Vivienne Tam\, 98.50.1\nMarch 2–27\nGallery FIT \nAsian Americans in New York Fashion: Design\, Labor\, Innovation celebrates the Asian American community’s diverse contributions to the fashion industry. The recent rise of violent\, racially motivated attacks against Asian Americans in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic has shown the need to increase support and awareness around the complex narratives and expansive achievements of this community. New York City is a fashion capital with a large and diverse Asian American community whose members contribute to every aspect of fashion production\, from manufacturing to creative design. This exhibition does not attempt to represent the entire Asian American experience; instead\, it highlights the depth and variety of Asian American design through object-based analysis. The exhibition examines topics such as labor and process in addition to exploring design motivation. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public; visit the exhibition webpage for details.

SUMMARY:2019 Annual Creative Technology and Design Exhibition: #DESIGN — Closes
DESCRIPTION:November 19–December 14\, 2019 \nGallery FIT\,  The Museum at FIT \nPomerantz Center Lobby \nWe are living through a fundamental workforce transformation during which digital technology has begun to alter the skills companies are searching for. Inspired by President Joyce F. Brown’s Workforce of the Future initiative\, FIT’s Advertising and Digital Design BFA\, Creative Technology and Design (CT&D) subject area\, and Center for Continuing and Professional Studies worked closely with our industry partners to create a series of specialized credit courses and noncredit certificate programs that are career-driven and forward-thinking. In addition\, CT&D also initiated a wide range of guided experiential learning (GEL) projects and career development events in collaboration with some of the most well-known companies and brands in the world. \nTo celebrate the eight-year anniversary of the CT&D subject area\, this year’s annual exhibition\, #DESIGN\,  showcases some of the most exciting industry collaboration projects and award-winning design projects. CT&D’s mission is to initiate a transformative journey for creatives worldwide so they can enter some of the most rewarding careers in the age of digital media. We believe designers are innovators\, activists\, and visionaries\, and our goal is to nurture the next generation creative workforce that will design digital content\, products\, platforms\, experiences\, and other solutions that leverage technology to solve business problems and to improve people’s lives. We believe the year of 2020 will be the beginning of an exciting new phase of our Creative Workforce of the Future initiative. \nThe exhibition is co-curated by professors C.J. Yeh and Christie Shin. \n#DESIGN is on display in Gallery FIT\, located in The Museum at FIT\, and in the lobby of the Pomerantz Center. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.
