SUMMARY:'96 lbs. of Dynamite': A ReelAbilities Film Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this free screening of the new documentary film 96 lbs. of Dynamite\, followed by a Q&A with people involved in the film moderated by FIT Film and Media Professor Emma Ben Ayoun. This screening is part of ReelAbilities Film Festival 2026\, a festival celebrating disability-focused media worldwide. \nAbout 96 lbs. of Dynamite\nWhen filmmaker Loren Goldfarb first notices Chad “Shorty” McDaniel in a Florida pool hall\, he underestimates the man using the motorized wheelchair\, until Chad starts winning. A lot. “96 lbs. of Dynamite”  follows Chad\, a witty\, fierce pool player born with brittle bone disease\, as he battles low expectations\, discrimination\, and physical barriers on his journey from a rural Mississippi upbringing to high-stakes amateur tournaments out West. As Chad confronts personal loss and life-altering choices\, the film presents an energetic\, humorous\, and deeply personal portrait of a man who\, despite being told he wouldn’t survive childhood\, refuses to shrink his life\, or his ambition. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Sounds\, Silences\, and Echoes: Listening for World War II and the Holocaust from North Africa
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Christopher Silver\, McGill University. \nThe FIT Holocaust Commemoration Committee and the Diversity Collective host “Sounds\, Silences\, and Echoes: Listening for World War II and the Holocaust from North Africa\,” presented by Dr. Christopher Silver. \nOn the eve of the Second World War\, half a million Jews called North Africa home. Among them\, were some of the most prominent Arabophone recording artists of the interwar period. With the collapse of France’s Third Republic in 1940\, Jewish communities from across Morocco\, Algeria\, and Tunisia\, already subject to the strictures of European colonialism\, now found themselves contending with and confronting fascist rule. For musicians\, this also meant removal from the airwaves and the stage. If the Maghrib has long been considered marginal to the historiography joining World War II to the Holocaust\, this talk considers the implications of bringing the “periphery” to the center of the narrative. To do so\, it amplifies an element too often neglected by historians: the realm of the aural. In listening for wartime radio broadcasts and concerts\, following the circulation of phonograph records and songbooks\, and attending to the sounds and silences of the era\, we will ask what music remembers of a history long forgotten. \nChristopher Silver is the Segal Family Associate Professor in Jewish History and Culture at McGill University. Recipient of awards from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada\, the American Academy of Jewish Research\, the American Institute for Maghrib Studies\, the Association for Recorded Sound Collections\, and the Posen Foundation\, Silver’s scholarship on history\, music\, and the Jewish-Muslim relationship has appeared in many journals including the International Journal of Middle East Studies and Jewish Social Studies. His book Recording History: Jews\, Muslims\, and Music Across Twentieth Century North Africa (Stanford University Press\, 2022) was awarded the L. Carl Brown Book Prize by the American Institute for Maghrib Studies for outstanding book in North African studies (2023) and was recently translated into Arabic. He is also the founder and curator of the website Gharamophone.com\, a digital archive of North African records from the first half of the 20th century. \nThis event is free and open to the public; REGISTER ONLINE.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: 'Till' and Q&A with Writer/Executive Producer Keith Beauchamp
DESCRIPTION:  \nBased on the true story of Mamie Till-Mobley\, Till depicts her pursuit of justice after the murder of her 14-year-old son Emmett in 1955. The film uses 27 years’ worth of research by Keith Beauchamp\, whose efforts led to the reopening of Till’s case by the United States Department of Justice in 2004. Directed by Chinonye Chukwu\, the film stars Danielle Deadwyler as Mamie Till-Bradley\, with Jalyn Hall\, Frankie Faison\, Haley Bennett\, and Whoopi Goldberg in supporting roles. \nThe tale of Emmett Till and his legacy is a true story of black resistance that kickstarted the battle for civil rights in America. According to Beauchamp\, who co-wrote and produced the film\, “There is no other story that speaks more to this generation and to this political climate and racial climate of this country than the story of Emmett Louis Till.” \nProfessor Dahlia Schweitzer\, from FIT’s Film and Media program\, will moderate a conversation with writer and executive producer Keith Beauchamp following the film. \nThe screening will take place in Room D207\, FIT’s screening room\, in the Pomerantz Center\, on the campus of FIT. \nSponsored by FIT’s Social Justice Center\, FIT’s Film and Media Program\, the School of Liberal Arts\, and the Justice Film Festival. \nThis event is free and open to the public; RESERVE A FREE TICKET ON EVENTBRITE.

SUMMARY:Film and Media Screening Series: 'My Art\,' with Laurie Simmons
DESCRIPTION:The Film and Media Screening Series will present My Art (2016) with director Laurie Simmons; she will participate in a Q&A after the film. \nMy Art tells the tale of the frustrated New York City artist Ellie\, who hopes to find inspiration as she house-sits for a friend in upstate New York. She turns the adjoining barn into her workplace\, staging elaborate recreations of classic movie scenes\, ranging from Some Like It Hot to A Clockwork Orange. Business unexpectedly evolves into pleasure when Ellie invites three local men to participate in her art. The film puts a devastatingly funny lens on such subjects as success\, ageism\, loneliness\, dating\, collaboration\, and ruthlessness. \nLaurie Simmons is an acclaimed photographer\, known for her intricately staged domestic scenes with dolls\, costumed dancers\, and ventriloquist dummies\, who also makes moving image art\, including 2006’s Meryl Streep–led The Music of Regret. Her work blends psychological\, political\, and conceptual approaches to art making\, transforming photography’s propensity to objectify people (especially women) into a sustained critique of the medium. In My Art\, she takes cues from her daughter [and co-star] Lena Dunham’s brand of acerbic wit and acutely feminist point of view for this comedy of self-realization. Featuring Parker Posey\, Barbara Sukowa\, and Broadway legend Blair Brown\, My Art is ultimately Simmons’s show\, repurposing familiar romantic comedy tropes with an endearing female protagonist. \nThe Film and Media Screening Series is supported by the School of Liberal Arts\, and the departments of Film\, Media and Performing Arts\, English and Communication Studies\, and Modern Languages and Cultures. \nAll Film and Media Screening Series films are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Film and Media Screening Series: 'The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till\,' with Keith Beauchamp
DESCRIPTION:The Film and Media Screening Series will present The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till (2005) with director Keith Beauchamp; he will participate in a Q&A after the film. \nThe Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till articulates the horrors of racism in the American South of the 1950s. Combining archival photos and footage with deeply felt interviews\, this documentary tells the harrowing story of what happened when a 14-year-old black boy from Chicago\, visiting relatives in Mississippi\, allegedly whistled at a white woman. Till’s brutal murder\, and the subsequent acquittal of the white men responsible\, would help launch the Civil Rights Movement. \nKeith Beauchamp originally studied criminal justice with the intention of becoming a civil rights attorney. After suffering a racially motivated assault by a police officer\, he instead felt compelled to fight racism by becoming a filmmaker. Beauchamp has devoted the past 22 years of his life to telling the story of Emmett Till and investigating the historic murder. AS a result of his efforts\, the United States Department of Justice reopened the murder case. Beauchamp is also involved with the FBI’s new civil rights “cold case” initiative\, producing documentaries on other unsolved civil rights murders in order to help agents bring remaining perpetrators to justice. \nThe Film and Media Screening Series is supported by the School of Liberal Arts\, and the departments of Film\, Media and Performing Arts\, English and Communication Studies\, and Modern Languages and Cultures. \nAll Film and Media Screening Series events are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:NYCJW: “They Did What?” Mid-20th Century Studio Jewelers and How Their Groundbreaking Work Continues to Shape the Field Today
DESCRIPTION:Join us for “They Did What?!” Mid-20th Century Studio Jewelers and How Their Groundbreaking Work Continues to Shape the Field Today\, a lecture focused on the work of  jewelers: Art Smith\, Margaret De Patta\, Alexander Calder\, Merry Renk\, Margret Craver\, Sam Kramer\, Miyé Matsukata and Winifred Mason. \nThis lecture\, by studio jeweler and Professor Heather White\, explores important developments in art jewelry from the middle of the twentieth century to the present. The jewelers included in the lecture have deep ties to the Northeast\, and many lived\, worked\, or studied in Boston and New York. \nWhite will discuss how these pioneers of jewelry helped lay the foundation for contemporary studio jewelers working today. These early practitioners shared a passion for technical\, conceptual\, and formal innovations that set them apart from commercial jewelers of their time. The lecture points to the ways in which these artists challenged the limited scope of jewelry and revolutionized adornment. \nAbout the Presenter: \nHeather White is a studio jeweler and Professor of Jewelry and Metalsmithing at Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt+Design). She is a Fulbright Scholar and Brother Thomas Fellowship recipient. In 2018 she curated the exhibition Adorning Boston and Beyond: Contemporary Studio Jewelry then and Now at the Society of Arts and Crafts\, Boston\, MA. Her works can be seen in The Penland Book of Jewelry: Master Classes in Jewelry Techniques\, Metalsmith and Sculpture Magazines. Her jewelry is in the following collections: Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, MA\, Museum of Art and Design\, NYC\, the Rotasa Foundation\, Mill Valley\, CA\, Samual Dorsky Museum of Art\, New Paltz\, NY\, and the Mint Museum\, Charlotte\, NC. \n\n\nThis event is part of New York City Jewelry Week (NYCJW). FIT is the official education partner. \nNew York City Jewelry Week is free and open to the public; RSVP for this event here.

SUMMARY:NYCJW: Cutting Etch—Mary Ann Scherr’s Legacy in Metal
DESCRIPTION:As part of NYC Jewelry Week\, curator and educator Ana Estrades discusses her research for the exhibition All Is Possible: Mary Ann Scherr’s Legacy in Metal\, opening from February to September 2020 at the Gregg Museum of Art and Design in Raleigh\, NC. Both talk and exhibition are a tribute to a larger-than-life artist-designer who influenced the metal and design communities for over 60 years. \nWhen Mary Ann Scherr (Akron\, OH 1921- Raleigh\, NC 2016) moved from New York City to Raleigh in 1989\, she was already an internationally renowned designer who had chaired the first Crafts Department at Parsons in Manhattan; innovated metal-etching techniques\, which were promoted by Rio Grande Suppliers; and pioneered jewelry that functioned as body monitors. And yet\, for the next 30 years she enriched the arts and life of her new community in North Carolina\, where she taught at Penland\, Duke\, Meredith College and N.C. State. \nThis talk\, “Cutting Etch—Mary Ann Scherr’s Legacy in Metal\,” aims to explore the full extent of Mary Ann Scherr’s legacy\, endless creativity\, and innovations through new archival material\, photographs of her work from private collections\, and recent oral histories with relatives\, friends\, collectors\, former students\, and studio assistants. \nAna Estrades is a jewelry curator\, researcher and educator\, with an MA in decorative arts\, material culture and design history from the Bard Graduate Center in New York City. She is currently teaching Modern Jewelry Designers 1870-1970 at Meredith College Art Department in Raleigh\, NC\, and also guest-curating an exhibition on Mary Ann Scherr’s jewelry designs in the Gregg Museum of Art and Design at N.C. State University\, which will open on February 20\, 2020. An article of her research on Scherr’s legacy in metal will be published in Metalsmith magazine in January of next year. \n\nThis event is part of New York City Jewelry Week (NYCJW). FIT is the official education partner. \nNew York City Jewelry Week is free and open to the public; RSVP for this event here.

DESCRIPTION:As part of part of FIT’s annual Holocaust commemoration\, the college will screen the 2019 Academy Award Nominee for Best Documentary Short Subject A Night at the Garden and host a discussion with director Marshall Curry. \nIn 1939\, 20\,000 Americans rallied in New York’s Madison Square Garden to celebrate the rise of Nazism—an event largely forgotten from American history. A Night at the Garden\, made entirely from archival footage filmed that night\, transports audiences to this chilling gathering and shines a light on the power of demagoguery and anti-Semitism in the United States. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Film and Media Screening Series: 'The Punk Singer\,' with Sini Anderson
DESCRIPTION:The Film and Media Screening Series will present The Punk Singer (2017) with director Sini Anderson; she will participate in a Q&A after the film. \nThe Punk Singer is a documentary film about feminist singer and activist Kathleen Hanna who fronted the bands Bikini Kill and Le Tigre\, and who was a central figure in the riot grrrl movement. The film combines a combination of interviews and archival footage\, tracing the life and career of Hanna from her troubled upbringing\, through her riot grrrl zines\, to her coining of the phrase “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for Kurt Cobain\, to her solo career as Julie Ruin. \nSini Anderson is an award-winning film director\, producer\, video art maker\, and feminist art activist who lives in New York City. Her first feature-length film\, The Punk Singer premiered at SXSW in 2013 and was acquired by IFC Films. The Punk Singer received a theatrical release in 111 American cities and in 25 countries around the world. \nAnderson is in the final phase of her second feature length film\, So Sick (2014-2019). The documentary is an exhaustive look at women who are suffering so called “mystery illnesses” and struggling to stay afloat in their lives and careers. The film uncovers infuriating truths behind women’s health care and questions an American health system that does little to dispel myths about “hysterical women.” In 2018\, Anderson was commissioned by LACMA Productions to direct a short documentary about American photographer Catherine Opie. The film premiered on Nov 3\, 2018\, at LACMA’s annual Art+Film Gala\, honoring Opie and Guillermo del Toro. LACMA Productions has approved an extended director’s cut and the film is currently being submitted to national and international film festivals. \nThe Film and Media Screening Series is supported by the Diversity Council\, the Student-Faculty Corporation\, the School of Liberal Arts\, and the departments of Film\, Media and Performing Arts\, English and Communication Studies\, and Modern Languages and Cultures. \nAll screenings are free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Director Leslie Harris. JUST ANOTHER GIRL ON THE I.R.T.\, Ariyan Johnson\, Ebony Jerido\, 1993\, (c)Miramax \nOriginal\, provocative\, and female-driven\, the feature Just Another Girl on the IRT was a welcome relief from the male dominated urban films of the ’90s. Smart\, ambitious\, and brash\, the lead character\, Chantel\, is not your typical “good girl” or “bad girl” but a complex character who deals with her ambitions\, African-American culture and disappointments with both humor and pathos. With a bold\, unforgettable hip-hop soundtrack and a heart-stopping ending\, this feature has become an indie cult classic and defined a generation. \nLeslie Harris\, one of the first African-American women to write\, direct and produce a narrative feature film. Just Another Girl on the IRT was released theatrically in the United States and 20 countries worldwide in 1993 after winning the Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize. The feature received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Debut Performance by a lead actress and Harris has received the IFP Gotham Award Open Palm\, a National Endowment for the Arts grant\, American Film Institute Filmmaker Award\, three New York State Council on the Arts grants\, a Jerome Foundation grant\, and an ABC/DGA Directing Fellowship. \nHarris produced and directed the narrative Showtime short film Bessie Coleman’s Dream to Fly\, about the first African-American to obtain an international pilot license\, two years before Amelia Earhart; the film received a Showtime Award for Excellence. Her short Never Forget\, about the historical\, social\, and political significance of black churches in Brooklyn\, was an official selection at the Philadelphia International Film Festival. She has taught at NYU Tisch School of the Arts and lectures at many universities around the world. \nJust Another Girl on the IRT recently screened at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Arts\, British Film Institute in London and Bristol\, UK for its 25th anniversary. SUMMARY:Film and Media Screening Series: 'The History of Luminous Motion\,' with Bette Gordon
DESCRIPTION:Director Bette Gordon \nThe Film and Media Screening series will present The History of Luminous Motion (1998) with director Bette Gordon; she will participate in a Q&A after the film. The History of Luminous Motion tells the story of 10-year-old Phillip and his Mom\,fugitives from The American Dream\, who live the outlaw life on the road. While other kids his age study the old-fashioned way\, the precocious Phillip has no need for school: the neon light of motel signs is light enough by which to read his textbooks on biology and physics—two subjects about which his mom teaches him a thing or two\, as she seduces men out of their credit cards to fuel their crazy flight. Phillip could live forever in this world of speed and light\, so long as Mom is behind the wheel of their Chevy. But Mom begins to feel the gravitational pull of home life and the need to settle down. In this darkly comic road movie\, Gordon continues to deal with the psychological and sexual issues that have permeated her work and for which she has received critical acclaim. \nBette Gordon\nA pioneer in American Independent Cinema\, and one of the most notable filmmakers to come out of the No Wave Movement of the 1980s in New York\, Bette Gordon is known for her bold explorations of themes related to sexuality\, violence\, and power. Her first feature\, Variety\, now a cult classic\, is about a woman who sells tickets in a pornographic movie theater in Times Square\, and was called\, “A female Taxi Driver\, gritty\, disturbing and explosive” by Time Out. Her films have been screened theatrically in the U.S. and abroad\, as well as at all the major international film festivals\, including Cannes\, Berlin\, Toronto\, Locarno\, Rotterdam\, and Tribeca. \n
