SUMMARY:Women’s History Month Speaker: Soraya Chemaly
DESCRIPTION:Soraya Chemaly will give a talk as part of Women’s History Month activities on campus. Chemaly is an award-winning writer and media critic whose writing appears regularly in national and international media including The Atlantic\, The Nation\, Verge\, Quartz\, TIME\, Salon\, The Guardian\, and The New Statesman. She speaks frequently on topics related to inclusivity\, free speech\, sexualized violence\, data\, and technology. She is the director of the Women’s Media Center Speech Project and organizer of the Safety and Free Speech Coalition\, an international civil society network dedicated to expanding women’s civic and political participation. She is also the author of the recent book Rage Becomes Her: The Power of Women’s Anger.

SUMMARY:Faculty and Staff Workshops on Campus Civility
DESCRIPTION:Recent years have ushered in what seems to be a decrease in civility in the United States\, and academic spaces are not immune from this change. While it can be easy to place blame on cultural changes\, as campuses experience generational shifts among students\, faculty need to take ownership for the roles we play. While we are experts through extensive academic training in our disciplines\, we might not be prepared to approach classrooms\, and the students who occupy them with us\, with civility and compassion. Faculty and students bring all of ourselves into the classrooms\, so we have to be prepared to engage in crucial conversations. This can begin by recognizing and acknowledging the presence and impact of microaggressions\, and that intent does not dictate impact. \nDr. Brian Bourke will help guide FIT faculty to recognize their roles and responsibilities in approaching civility in the classroom and will help faculty develop skills in facilitating crucial conversations\, with the aim of enhancing civility and embracing compassion in their classes. \nTwo sessions will be held: March 22\, 9–10 am and 5–6 pm. \nThis event is cosponosred by the FIT Faculty Senate and the Office of Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion. \nRSVP to robin_litwinsky@fitnyc.edu. \nThis event is for FIT faculty and staff only.

SUMMARY:Urban Buzz: Bees and Beekeeping in NYC
DESCRIPTION:This talk\, “The Honeybee Conservancy and FIT Hives\,” is an exploration of the diverse types of bees in New York\, the complex relationship between pollinators and people\, and a discussion of why urban beekeeping benefits the city and how we can protect bees in a time of abrupt environmental change. It will be accompanied by a guided tasting flight of honey from New York City and around the world.
