SUMMARY:From Data to Design: Rethinking Fashion's Approach to Plus-Size Shoppers
DESCRIPTION:From Data to Design: Rethinking Fashion’s Approach to Plus-Size Shoppers is a presentation of the research results from an FIT Presidential Diversity Grant\, “Accurate Size Research: The Collection of Data and Vital Importance of Realistic Consumer Sizes.” \nThis grant was awarded to and the research presentation will be given by Mallorie Dunn of FIT’s Fashion Department\, who also teaches courses in the Center for Continuing and Professional Studies and Precollege Programs. Dunn is also the owner and designer for SmartGlamour\, an inclusive\, customizable\, sustainable clothing brand that has been a pioneer in the inclusive fashion space since its founding in 2014. \nThis presentation is open to the FIT community and the NYC fashion community at large. The research presented focuses on both measurement data and great shopping habits and trends of folks with a waist size of 34 inches and above\, who live in the U.S.\, and shop for women’s clothing. This target demographic was chosen as these folks are both the majority of the U.S. population and systemically left out by mainstream fashion. Despite being 67–72% of the population\, only 12–19% of fashion stores carry clothing for them. Fashion designers must shift their approach and thinking when it comes to who are customers are\, how we treat them\, how we market to them\, and how we design clothing for them. \nThis event is free and open to the public; REGISTER ONLINE.

SUMMARY:The New Stereotype
DESCRIPTION:The New Stereotype (TNS) is a transformative project that began in 2015 with the aim of reshaping the narrative surrounding Black individuals in America using photography and fashion. At the heart of TNS lies “STORIES\,” a year-long narrative journey that venerates the multifaceted tapestry of Black life in America\, skillfully woven through the mediums of fashion\, photography\, and film. \n“STORIES” unfolds as a book composed of diverse chapters\, each illuminating the unique and authentic life narratives of Black men and women. These chapters cover topics from fashion\, diaspora\, ancestry\, and Black hair and beauty\, to parenthood\, adversity\, incarceration\, globetrotting\, masculinity\, philanthropy\, and beyond. DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition Pattern\, the Grid\, and Other Systems\, artist and author Hannah B Higgins will give a talk on The Grid Book\, in which she examines the history of 10 grids that changed the world: the brick\, the tablet\, the gridiron city plan\, the map\, musical notation\, the ledger\, the screen\, moveable type\, the manufactured box\, and the net. \nPattern\, the Grid\, and Other Systems is on display in the Art and Design Gallery through December 3 and features work that utilizes and explores all aspects of repetition and pattern. Pattern is often thought of in terms of art and design: the repetition of shape in surface design. But the definition of pattern can be even more expansive: It’s a regularity or repetition in the world in general. It includes the repetition of abstract ideas as well as form. The exhibition includes two-dimensional\, three-dimensional\, and time-based artwork from FIT faculty\, students\, and distinguished alumni\, as well as from guest artists. \nThis event is for the FIT community only.

DESCRIPTION:Brittany Perham\, winner of the Barnard Women Poets Prize for her book Double Portrait\, will read selections from her work and answer questions. She will sign copies of her book afterwards. \n\n\nBrittany Perham is the author of Double Portrait (W.W. Norton\, 2017)\, which was selected by Claudia Rankine for the Barnard Women Poets Prize; The Curiosities (Free Verse Editions\, 2012); and\, with Kim Addonizio\, the collaborative chapbook The Night Could Go in Either Direction (SHP\, 2016). In 2016 she received the Elizabeth Matchett Stover Memorial Award given by Southwest Review; she has also received awards and fellowships from the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity\, the Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fund\, and the James Merrill House Foundation. She is a Jones Lecturer in the creative writing program at Stanford University\, where she was a Wallace Stegner Fellow. SUMMARY:Lecture: Taller Boricua: A Hispanic Cultural Institution in New York
DESCRIPTION:Curator Luis Cancel will talk about Taller Boricua\, a nonprofit arts organization in East Harlem\, and its numerous exhibitions of Latin American artists. Cancel is a  New York–born Puerto Rican artist\, art administrator\, and art historian who served as executive director of the Bronx Museum of the Arts. While at the museum\, he received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts to research Latin American art\, which enabled him to travel extensively throughout Latin America and establish important contacts for the museum with major collectors\, galleries\, and museums. He also curated several major exhibitions\, including the first\, second\, and third Emerging Expressions biennials: The Artists and the Computer; Devastation/Resurrection: The South Bronx; Krishna Reddy\, a Retrospective; and Latin American Spirit: Art and Artists in the United States\, 1920-1970. \nThis event is part of Hispanic Heritage Month.
