SUMMARY:Fashion Over 50: Women’s Self-Images\, Shopping Frustrations\, and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:The over-50 fashion market is surging as Generation-X women join their Baby Boomer sisters\, swelling an already significant economic niche. Yet this cohort\, with its considerable spending power\, is often overlooked by the fashion industry and fashion media—a problem exacerbated by shrinking retail selections and the shift to online shopping. How can the industry—and individual women—respond? \nFashion Over 50: Women’s Self-Images\, Shopping Frustrations\, and Solutions will offer insights for creating and marketing to this underserved cohort\, featuring experts in fashion forecasting\, image consulting\, design\, media\, and retail. We invite members of the fashion industry\, academia\, and the public to join us in this intriguing discussion. \nSee the full schedule and speaker bios.  \nThis symposium is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: All That Glitters … — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Paco Rabanne\, evening dress\, 1969\, France\, gift of Montgomery Ward\, 81.48.2.\nFebruary 26–March 23\, 2025\nThe Museum at FIT Lobby \nFIT’s School of Graduate Studies\, in collaboration with The Museum at FIT\, presents All That Glitters … \, a new exhibition conceived and organized by students in the college’s Fashion and Textiles Studies MA program. \nAll that glitters is not always gold—it can be any medium that catches the light\, shines\, and reflects. The post–World War II era saw a blossoming of new textiles and technologies that changed the relationship between fashion materials and light. All That Glitters … explores surfaces that shine\, focusing on themes of material production\, social and financial values\, and conservation. It examines not only the bright side of these materials\, but also their darker side–including their environmental impact and their use in protests\, such as “glitter bombing.” \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Book Launch Event: Jane Austen's Wardrobe\, with Hilary Davidson
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of Jane Austen’s Wardrobe\, by the chair of the Fashion and Textile Studies Department in the School of Graduate Studies. Davidson will discuss the book and a signing will follow. \nAbout Jane Austen’s Wardrobe \nWhat did Jane Austen wear? \nAcclaimed dress historian and Austen expert Hilary Davidson reveals\, for the first time\, the wardrobe of one of the world’s most celebrated authors. Despite her acknowledged brilliance on the page\, Jane Austen has all too often been accused of dowdiness in her appearance. Drawing on Austen’s 161 known letters\, as well as her own surviving garments and accessories\, this book assembles examples of the variety of clothes she would have possessed—from gowns and coats to shoes and undergarments—to tell a very different story. The Jane Austen Hilary Davidson discovers is alert to fashion trends but thrifty and eager to reuse and repurpose clothing. Her renowned irony and wit peppers her letters\, describing clothes\, shopping\, and taste. Jane Austen’s Wardrobe offers the rare pleasure of a glimpse inside the closet of a stylish dresser and perpetually fascinating writer. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Book Launch Event: Westernwear\, with Sonya Abrego
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Fashion and Textile Studies will hold an event for faculty member Sonya Abrego to celebrate the release of her new book\, Westernwear: Postwar American Fashion and Culture\, published by Bloomsbury. \nFrom the Bloomsbury press release: \nBy analysing well-known and rarely considered western manufacturers\, Westernwear revises the common perception that fashionable innovation came from the East coast and places western youth cultures squarely back in the picture. The book connects the history of American working class dress with broader fashionable trends and discusses how and why Native American designs and representations of Native American people were incorporated broadly and inconsistently into the western visual vocabulary. Setting westernwear firmly in context\, Sonya Abrego addresses the incorporation of this iconic style into postwar wardrobes and popular culture\, and charts the evolution of westernwear into a modern fashion phenomenon. \n\n\n\nSonya Abrego is a design historian specializing in the history of American fashion in the 20th century. She holds a PhD in decorative arts\, design history\, and material culture studies from Bard Graduate Center\, USA\, and takes an interdisciplinary approach to examining the connections between dress\, popular culture\, and modern art and design. \nThis event is free and open to the public; no RSVP is required.

SUMMARY:Online Exhibition: Jacaranda: 2020 Illustration MFA Visual Thesis Exhibition—Ongoing
DESCRIPTION:June 11–August 31\, 2020 \nThe School of Graduate Studies presents the 2020 Illustration MFA Visual Thesis Exhibition\, Jacaranda\, as an online exhibition hosted by the Society of Illustrators. \nThe 2020 MFA in Illustration candidates have spent the past three years of graduate study supporting\, challenging\, and encouraging each other through remarkable and extraordinary circumstances. As individuals they are talented\, dedicated artists. As a group they are unbreakable. In their online exhibition on the Society of Illustrators website you’ll see nine projects exploring narratives with themes of personal analysis\, cultural history\, science\, reportage\, and fantasy. Viewed together\, the work is a powerful unified artistic expression. \nThe Jacaranda tree is a symbol of the cohort’s trip to California. It is a fitting commemoration of their shared growth and their sturdy\, enduring bond. We are proud to present this work that represents the culmination of three years of academic study and professional development for the class of 2020. \nThe MFA in Illustration at FIT is a three-year program designed to provide opportunities to develop a creative voice and refine technical skills. SUMMARY:Graduate Studies Invites: Museum Objects\, Health and Healing
DESCRIPTION:Associate Professor Brenda Cowan\, Exhibition and Experience Design\, presents research from her new book\, Museum Objects\, Health and Healing\, with partners in the museum community. Cowan’s book provides an innovative and interdisciplinary study of the relationship between objects\, health and healing. Shedding light on the primacy of the human need for relationships with objects\, the book explores what kind of implications these relationships might have on the exhibition experience. \nMerging museum and object studies\, as well as psychotherapy and the psychology of well-being\, the authors present a new theory titled Psychotherapeutic Object Dynamics\, which provides a cross- disciplinary study of the relationship between objects\, health and well-being. Drawing on primary research in museums\, psychotherapeutic settings and professional practice throughout the US\, Canada\, Bosnia-Herzegovina and the UK\, the book provides an overview of the theory’s origins\, the breadth of its practical applications on a global level\, and a framework for further understanding the potency of objects in exhibitions and daily life. \nThis event will also feature a panel discussion with Cowan and: \n\nJan Ramirez\, 9/11 Memorial Museum \nTanya Melendez\, The Museum at FIT\nMelisa Delibegovic\, research associate for War Childhood Museum study\n\n\nAnd the event will feature “Authors on Objects\,” a special set of readings by Leslie Bedford\, Libba Bray\, Geof Huth\, and Ellen Snyder-Grenier \nThe event is about personal objects and their healing power: Please bring an object to display! \nThe event is part of the Graduate Studies Invites series\, hosted by FIT’s School of Graduate Studies. \nThis event is free and open to the public; RSVP to gradRSVP@fitnyc.edu.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: X-RAYS of Balenciaga\, Chanel\, Dior\, and Givenchy — Closes
DESCRIPTION:February 6–16\, 2019 \nX-RAYS of Balenciaga\, Chanel\, Dior\, and Givenchy is the result of a collaboration between the students of FIT’s Fashion Design MFA program and The Museum at FIT. The project is part of a course titled “Fashion Creation 3—Design Archaeology\,” which centers on the concept that in order to move design forward\, it is of utmost value to know where it has been. \nThe students were divided into four groups\, and then each group was tasked with producing a replica of a couture garment from a leading fashion house: Balenciaga\, Chanel\, Dior\, or Givenchy. The original garments\, housed in The Museum at FIT collection\, were carefully researched by the students. In addition to creating the line-for-line replicas\, the students gained a deep understanding of the brand’s heritage. They then developed a contemporary\, technology-driven collection. \nThe display of process-based design work highlights each student’s personal development\, resulting in a fully realized look and an advertorial that completes their vision and projects a new direction for each house. \nThis exhibition is open to the public.  \nThe Museum at FIT hours:\nTuesday–Friday: Noon–8 pm\nSaturday: 10 am–5 pm\nClosed Sundays\, Mondays\, and legal holidays

SUMMARY:Graduate Studies Invites: What Is Fashion Research?
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nFor its first New York event\, the Fashion Research Network (FRN) has partnered with the FIT’s School of Graduate Studies to ask\, “What is fashion research?” This panel discussion and debate will bring together some of the city’s leading fashion scholars to consider a range of current approaches to fashion research. SUMMARY:Graduate Studies Invites: Fashion Curating with Luca Marchetti
DESCRIPTION:Fashion is a complex cultural phenomenon. Through its many variants and its still rather undefined contours\, “fashion curating” informs us about the logic and the issues that have made fashion one of the most powerful expressions of contemporary aesthetics.
