SUMMARY:Reading of the Names of Holocaust Victims
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, April 11\, 2019\, FIT will commemorate the Holocaust with the annual Reading of the Names of Holocaust Victims in the FIT Dining Hall in the Dubinsky Building.  By reading the names of the victims of the Holocaust\, we give a face to the forgotten victims whose lives were cut short by genocide. \nTwo readings will take place. One reading will be held from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm; the second will be from 2 to 4:45 pm.  \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:'A Night at the Garden': What We Can Learn from a 1939 Nazi Rally
DESCRIPTION:As part of part of FIT’s annual Holocaust commemoration\, the college will screen the 2019 Academy Award Nominee for Best Documentary Short Subject A Night at the Garden and host a discussion with director Marshall Curry. \nIn 1939\, 20\,000 Americans rallied in New York’s Madison Square Garden to celebrate the rise of Nazism—an event largely forgotten from American history. A Night at the Garden\, made entirely from archival footage filmed that night\, transports audiences to this chilling gathering and shines a light on the power of demagoguery and anti-Semitism in the United States. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Bioethics and the Holocaust: Reflecting on the Past to Protect the Future
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Stacy Gallin.\nAs part of FIT’s annual Holocaust commemoration\, Dr. Stacy Gallin\, director of the Center for Human Dignity in Bioethics\, Medicine\, and Health at Misericordia University\, will give a lecture titled “Bioethics and the Holocaust: Reflecting on the Past to Protect the Future.” \nThis lecture will focus on the abrogation of biomedical ethics in World War II Germany\, demonstrating how the Holocaust is a unique example of medically sanctioned genocide. The biomedical ethical considerations brought to light as a result of the alliance between medicine and politics remain relevant for current medical and scientific practice\, health care policy\, and human rights endeavors.  Eugenics\, disability studies\, beginning and end-of-life care and human subject experimentation are all topics that are vital to the history as well as the future of bioethics. Understanding the pivotal role played by science and medicine in the labeling\, persecution\, and eventual mass murder of those deemed “unfit” is essential to preventing other instances of human rights abuses in modern society.

DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Rethinking a Refugee Crisis: Jewish Survivors in Occupied Germany—and Refugees Today\nThursday\, April 6\, 1–2 pm\nPomerantz Center\, Film and Media Screening Room D207 \nAs part of FIT’s Holocaust Remembrance Day events\, Dr. Atina Grossmann\, professor of  history at the Cooper Union\, will present “Rethinking a Refugee Crisis: Jewish Survivors in Occupied Germany—and Refugees Today.” Learn gripping and unforgettable details about the reappearance of traumatized Jewish refugees in Allied-occupied Germany in the immediate aftermath of the Holocaust when Grossmann chronicles the hunger\, disease\, and homelessness of these refugees.  She will untangle the stories of Jewish survivors inside and outside the displaced-persons camps of the American zone as they built families and reconstructed identities. ​ \n  \nReading of the Names of Holocaust Victims: \nThursday\, April 6\, 9 am–noon and 2–5 pm\nFIT Dining Hall \nFIT’s Holocaust Commemoration Committee hosts a reading of names from among the six million victims\, giving a face to the forgotten victims whose lives were cut short by genocide.
