DESCRIPTION:December 12–17\, 2017 \nReception: Tuesday\, December 12\, 6-8 pm \nStudents in the Art Market Studies MA program hold an off-campus thesis exhibition at Chinatown Soup Gallery\, 16 Orchard Street\, in Manhattan. \nPeople are reborn in New York City. The portraits represent the identities of New Yorkers\, their values and culture. The exhibition showcases the freedoms the city offers. Everyone in the city is unique. Here and Now: Portraits of New York presents distinctive works in various media by emerging artists. Small-run editions encourage accessibility and a discussion that extends beyond a restricted art world. The curation is concerned with questions of historical ownership\, market participation\, and alternative modes of distribution. \nThis multifaceted group of artists\, working in painting\, photography\, sculpture\, and material items capture the face of New York now and very likely in the future. The exhibition brings new artists to New Yorkers\, and brings New Yorkers to each other\, letting us all see each other as portraits. \n#HANPONY2017

DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of Jeffrey Beebe.\nThe Art Market MA program sponsors A Town Hall Meeting on Art and Politics\, a discussion with industry professionals  about the role of art vis-à-vis our current political climate. This participatory conversation will  pose the question: What next? \nMany anticipate that Donald Trump’s presidency will benefit the art market through deregulation and tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy. Yet the election also exposed a complacency that has left many feeling complicit in the status quo and questioning the role of art in society. How can art serve a broader public\, and not merely the economic elite? Is art too self-referential\, too conceptual\, too formal\, too individualistic to be relevant to society at large? \nFeatured speakers: Ariel Adkins\, Brian Boucher\, Ambre Kelly and Andrew Gori\, John Post Lee\, Walter Robinson\, Amol Sarva\, Christian Viveros-Fauné\, and others. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, however\, registration is requested; register here.
