SUMMARY:Merchants of Style: Art and Fashion After Warhol
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an event to launch Merchants of Style: Art and Fashion After Warhol on Tuesday\, May 9. Natasha Degen\, chair of Art Market Studies\, will discuss her new book with curator and faculty member Alexandra Schwartz at 6 pm. A reception will follow. \nMerchants of Style explores the accelerating convergence of art and fashion\, looking at the interplay of artists and designers—and the role of institutions\, both public and commercial—that has brought about this marriage of aesthetic industries. Degen argues that one figure more than any other anticipated this moment: Andy Warhol. \nBeginning with an overview of art and fashion’s deeply entwined histories before picking up where Warhol left off\, Merchants of Style tells the story of art’s emboldened forays into commerce and fashion’s growing embrace of art. As the two industries draw closer together than ever before\, this book addresses urgent questions about what the future holds. \nDegen recently published a guest essay in The New York Times related to Merchants of Style titled “The Met Gala\, or When Fashion Consumes Art.”  \nThis event is free and open to the public; REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

SUMMARY:Art Market Studies Symposium: What Does It Mean to Make Art in 2022?
DESCRIPTION:The Art Market Studies graduate program class of 2022 presents an afternoon of performance and discourse in response to the leading question\, what does it mean to make art in 2022? Being a young emerging artist in New York presents an absurd myriad of opportunities and challenges\, fueled by the creative but competitive nature of the city\, along with drastic changes brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. \nAs we enter the second half of 2022\, we remember the victims of anti-Asian hate crimes and commemorate the lives lost. In light of May as AAPI Heritage Month\, we have invited a select group of emerging Asian artists based in NYC to celebrate their talents and share their experiences. It is our hope that we can uplift our community by raising awareness as young art world professionals. \nSymposium: 2–5:30 pm \nReception: 5:30–7 pm  \nGuest Speaker:\nJasmine Wahi \nArtist Panelists:\nAyoung Yu\nMinku Kim\nAura Wang\nErica Byun\nSohye Kim \nCurated by Dominique Castro\, Chelsea Burgess\, Pingting Tu\, Shihua Zhang\, Danielle Paterson\, Sae Matsumoto\, and Sean Go\, with special thanks to Professor Alexandra Schwartz. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Art Market Studies Exhibition: Beyond Species
DESCRIPTION:May 21–24; opening reception: Tuesday\, May 21\, 7–9 pm\n72 Warren St.\, New York\, NY \nBeyond Species is an off-campus exhibition curated by graduating students in the MA in Art Market Studies program. \nChanges to human interactions with the environment and advances in technology have made interspecies relationships more precarious by challenging the traditional hierarchy of species. What is the role of humans vis-à-vis animals\, machines\, and other humans? Is it possible to find balance\, harmony\, and a common language? \nBeyond Species highlights nine international artists who use a variety of techniques\, media\, and subject matter to investigate permutations of speciesism\, a problem that contemporary art\, in essence\, can’t ignore. These artists include Pindar van Arman\, Hannah Rose Berry\, Ambrus Gero\, Vitaly Komar\, Kuang-Yi Ku\, Christine Rai\, Richard Sheng\, Rosary Solimanto\, and Wei-Ping Wang. Each artist uses his or her own philosophy to determine what it means to be human and where our interactions with both animals and AI technology are headed. Beyond Species brings different perspectives to the exploration of interspecies relationships\, proposing a range of reactions to these questions\, from ensuring that technology remains in the service of humanity to non-hierarchical collaboration among all species and harmonious coexistence. \nThe opening reception on Tuesday\, May 21\, 7–9 pm is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:The Art Market and Money Laundering: A Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Art Market Studies MA program at the School of Graduate Studies holds a symposium titled “The Art Market and Money Laundering.” The symposium brings together notable experts from law enforcement\, the art industry\, academia\, and financial crimes compliance to engage in a robust discussion on the current state of the art market and laundering and how more effectively to uncover\, deter\, and punish laundering while minimizing costs to the industry. \nThe art market is notoriously opaque and unregulated\, which makes it particularly vulnerable to this kind of illicit activity. Dirty money\, disguised as capital gains on the sale of one or more assets\, is laundered by undervaluing art at purchase or overvaluing it at sale\, making it difficult for financial institutions or law enforcement to find out. Transferring the value of the criminal proceeds is then implemented by simply transferring ownership of the asset. \nInternational standards promulgated by the Financial Action Task Force have been adopted as domestic law by nearly every country of the world\, with banks\, broker-dealers\, payment agencies\, and other businesses subject to required preventative measures to prevent and uncover money laundering. \nShould these same preventive measures apply to art dealers and other participants in the art market? Legislation proposed in the U.S. House of Representatives would do so. Would it work? Or would it prove onerous and ineffective\, as some art market players have claimed? Are there other solutions to be found\, for instance through self-regulation or blockchain technology? \nJoin us for thought proving discussion on the topic in a joint symposium hosted by Natasha Degen\, chair\, Art Market Studies\, FIT School of Graduate Studies; Richard Gordon\, director\, Financial Integrity Institute\, Case Western Reserve University; and Casey King\, director\, capstone program\, Jackson Institute for Global Affairs\, Yale University. \nTo register for this event\, click here. \n\n12:30–1 pm: Registration \n1–1:15 pm: Welcome and Opening Remarks \n1:15–2:45 pm: Panel 1 \n\nChristopher McKeogh\, FBI\, New York\nAndrew Adams\, AUSA\, Deputy Chief\, Money Laundering Division\, Southern District of New York\nLeila A. SUMMARY:A Town Hall Meeting on Art and Politics
DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of Jeffrey Beebe.\nThe Art Market MA program sponsors A Town Hall Meeting on Art and Politics\, a discussion with industry professionals  about the role of art vis-à-vis our current political climate. This participatory conversation will  pose the question: What next? \nMany anticipate that Donald Trump’s presidency will benefit the art market through deregulation and tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy. Yet the election also exposed a complacency that has left many feeling complicit in the status quo and questioning the role of art in society. How can art serve a broader public\, and not merely the economic elite? Is art too self-referential\, too conceptual\, too formal\, too individualistic to be relevant to society at large? \nFeatured speakers: Ariel Adkins\, Brian Boucher\, Ambre Kelly and Andrew Gori\, John Post Lee\, Walter Robinson\, Amol Sarva\, Christian Viveros-Fauné\, and others. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, however\, registration is requested; register here.
