SUMMARY:Empowering the Next Generation of Art History Leadership
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 1971\, the Art History Association is one of SUNY New Paltz’s oldest student clubs. For over fifty years\, this organization has focused on creating opportunities for undergraduate students to develop leadership and organizational skills while creating innovative programing for the entire campus community. Most recently\, the group’s leaders\, in collaboration with Professor Heuer\, have founded the annual SUNY New Paltz Undergraduate Art History Symposium\, which in a few years has grown to be the largest event of its kind in the United States\, featuring nearly one hundred speakers from collegiate institutions across the globe. \nKeely Heuer is an Associate Professor of Art History at SUNY New Paltz\, where she has served as the campus’ Art History Association faculty liaison for nearly a decade. Dr. Heuer’s research concentrates primarily on the iconography of Greek vase-painting and the interrelations between Greek settlers and the indigenous populations of pre-Roman Italy. She has presented lectures and conference talks on a wide variety of imagery found on vases produced in southern Italy and Sicily in the United States\, Europe\, and Near East. Her current book project is a comparison of shared iconographic themes in South Italian and Etruscan red-figure vase-painting. \nThis event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:New Curating: Justice\, Museums\, and the Power of the Grand Narrative
DESCRIPTION:Three panelists engage in a conversation on innovative aspects and new ways of curating histories and art. Learn about exciting new initiatives and directions to diversify traditional displays in art galleries and museums. How has curating changed in recent years\, and how have art galleries and museums with traditional curatorial roles focused on specific periods or arts and cultures responded? How can we reach audiences in a meaningful way to engage with objects and histories? \nLed by Art History and Museum Professions Department Junior Joi Berry (’23) and supported through a Grant for a Black Futures sponsored by FIT project\, this conversation builds upon the excitement and enthusiasm created by past exhibitions curated by Berry. View Berry’s Black Futures exhibition here.  \nThis event is part of FIT’s Black History Month activities. Find more at fitnyc.edu/blackhistory. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:A Yearning for Perfection
DESCRIPTION:Join a conversation between Tom Bronk (b. 1944) and John Paul Jang (AHMP ‘22). In his Op Art paintings\, Bronk explores ratio\, linearity\, and symmetry. His diagnosis of late stage Parkinson’s disease\, uncontrollable shaking\, and loss of balance does not stop his yearning for perfect geometry in his paintings. \nJohn Paul Jang is the senator of the Art History and Museum Professions program and co-founder of the Artchive series. She has volunteered to assist Bronk in his painting procedure. \nLearn about Bronk’s unconventional artistic journey\, platforms for outsider artists\, and about disability inclusion in the art world. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; scan the QR code in the flyer above to join on the date/time the event.
