DESCRIPTION:For its first digital-only issue\, Hue magazine ran a story written and illustrated by Sam Kalda ‘14 about creative life during lockdown. \nFIT will be talking with Kalda about the joys and struggles of making a living as an artist\, how to find inspiration in stressful times\, and details of his creative process. We should have time for some questions from the audience as well. \nIllustrator Sam Kalda\, based in St. Paul\, won a gold medal in book illustration from the Society of Illustrators in 2017. His work has appeared in The New York Times\, The New Yorker\, Buzzfeed\, The Boston Globe\, Wired\, and many other publications. DESCRIPTION:In this virtual Hue Live event\, Hue Managing Editor Alex Joseph visits internationally renowned artist Abigail DeVille at her studio. \nMaintaining a long-standing interest in marginalized people and places\, New York-based Abigail DeVille creates site-specific immersive installations designed to bring attention to these forgotten stories\, such as with the sculpture she built on the site of a former African American burial ground in Harlem. \nDeVille often works with objects and materials sourced from the area surrounding the exhibition site\, and her theatrical aesthetic embodies the phrase\, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.” Though collected objects are essential to her installations\, DeVille’s priority is the stories her installations can tell. In a historic move\, Daniel led the collaboration between Harlem’s Fashion Row\, Nike\, and LeBron James on the HFRxLBJ16 shoe\, the first LeBron sneaker designed by and for women. The shoe sold out in less than five minutes. She has been featured in TEDx Memphis\, the Forbes 30 under 30 summit\, and the Forbes CMO Summit.
