SUMMARY:World Affairs Lecture Series: Mapping the Unseen: The Hidden Costs of War
DESCRIPTION:Stephanie Savell.\nIn this virtual World Affairs Lecture\, Brown University Professor Stephanie Savell will be in conversation with Dr. Souzeina Mushtaq\, assistant professor of Communication and Media Studies at the University of Wisconsin–River Falls\, on the topic of Mapping the Unseen: The Hidden Costs of War. \nStephanie Savell is director of the University’s Costs of War project\, which documents the consequences of United States military operations and spending\, at home and abroad. Building on the work of over 70 scholars\, the project’s research is a top resource for media\, policymakers\, and peace and social justice movements on the budgetary\, human\, environmental\, and social costs of U.S. war. A public anthropologist\, Savell is committed to transforming U.S. public narratives and challenging the dominance of the military-industrial complex in shaping policy decisions. Savell’s work has been featured in The Washington Post\, The Guardian\, CNN\, BBC\, NPR\, and many other outlets. \nThe Department of Social Sciences’ World Affairs Lecture Series fulfills FIT’s mission to foster an understanding of diverse cultures and politics from both international and domestic perspectives.
