SUMMARY:Exhibition: All That Glitters … — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Paco Rabanne\, evening dress\, 1969\, France\, gift of Montgomery Ward\, 81.48.2.\nFebruary 26–March 23\, 2025\nThe Museum at FIT Lobby \nFIT’s School of Graduate Studies\, in collaboration with The Museum at FIT\, presents All That Glitters … \, a new exhibition conceived and organized by students in the college’s Fashion and Textiles Studies MA program. \nAll that glitters is not always gold—it can be any medium that catches the light\, shines\, and reflects. The post–World War II era saw a blossoming of new textiles and technologies that changed the relationship between fashion materials and light. All That Glitters … explores surfaces that shine\, focusing on themes of material production\, social and financial values\, and conservation. It examines not only the bright side of these materials\, but also their darker side–including their environmental impact and their use in protests\, such as “glitter bombing.” \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: City in Bloom: Rediscovering Nature's Fragments — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Story Stitchers Collective\, Peace in the Prairie\, 2022. (Video still).\nFebruary 13–March 25\, 2025\nArt and Design Gallery \nCity in Bloom is a meditation on the resilience of the human experience and the restorative capacity of nature within urban life. From the shaded elegance of tree-lined streets to the verdant sophistication of plants nurtured within apartments\, these moments of “urban nature” assert themselves to our advantage\, reminding city dwellers that serenity\, a sense of place within the infinite universe\, can be accessed simply by watching for owls in Central Park or pigeons on one’s own windowsill; beholding slivers of light\, cloud\, and sky between shimmery\, towering skyscrapers; listening for seagulls as one walks toward a lake or river\, then smelling the salty breeze floating across it. After all\, even in the most industrialized of spaces\, nature’s carefully calibrated biorhythms persist. \n\nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation. \nThe gallery is open 9 am to 5 pm daily. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:2025 Lawrence Israel Prize Lecture: INC Architecture and Design
DESCRIPTION:From left: Adam Rolston\, Tyler Kleck\, Gabriel Benroth\, Hilary Fulmer Kroll\, and Drew Stuart. Photo by: Christopher Garcia Valle.\nThe Interior Design Department honors INC Architecture and Design with its 2025 Lawrence Israel Prize. The prize\, endowed by the architect Lawrence J. Israel\, has been given annually since 1998 to an individual or firm whose ideas and work enrich FIT Interior Design students’ course of study. \nAdam Rolston\, one of INC’s three founding partners\, creative and managing director\, AIA\, will accept the award and deliver a talk titled “Architectures of Community\,” during which he will address the role of design as a medium for cultural self-definition\, social resistance\, and political discourse. \nINC is a passionate\, open-source\, multi-disciplinary\, architecture\, and design studio dedicated to the integration of the design disciplines. A tripartite leadership structure guides the firm’s projects from conception to completion and balances the three essential elements of design: joy\, utility\, and craft. The firm unlocks the creative process to engage clients and collaborators because good ideas can come from anywhere. Each project is a unique portrait imbued with the aspirations of its clientele. The company asserts that a project can take its place in the environment of a city or in the heart of its user by creating a meaningful dialogue with its physical and cultural conditions. At INC wellness and sustainability are a single integrated discipline because what’s good for the planet is good for the human and vice versa. \nPrior awardees include Annabelle Selldorf\, Karim Rashid\, Lot-ek\, David Rockwell\, Gaetano Pesce\, Diller Scofidio + Renfro\, Tony Chi\, and Joel Sanders. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
