SUMMARY:Globally Connected @ FIT: Cultural Mapping of American and Chinese Dreams: Imagining Across Transpacific Boundaries
DESCRIPTION:A discussion based on Dr. Melody Li’s new book Transpacific Cartographies: Narrating the Contemporary Chinese Diaspora in the United States. The book examines how contemporary Chinese diasporic narratives address the existential loss of home for immigrant communities at a time of global precarity and amid rising Sino-U.S. tensions. Intersecting with and bridging Sinophone studies\, Chinese American studies\, and diaspora studies and drawing on theories of literary cartography\, Transpacific Cartographies demonstrates how the transpacific “maps” the Chinese diaspora draw offer their readers different paths for finding a sense of home no matter where they are. \nDr. Melody Li is assistant professor in Chinese studies at the University of Houston\, Texas. She has a PhD in comparative literature at Washington University in St. Louis. Her research interests include Asian diaspora literature\, modern Chinese literature and culture\, translation studies\, performance studies\, and cultural identities. She is the co-editor of Affective Geographies and Narratives of Chinese Diaspora (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2022). \nGlobally Connected @ FIT is hosted by the Office of International Programs\, History of Art\, and the Cultural Fellows. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.

DESCRIPTION:February 9–March 3\, 2024\nArt and Design Gallery \nThe Colorful Influence of Susan Daykin at the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Art and Design Gallery celebrates the artwork and teaching of Fine Arts Professor Susan Daykin. Throughout the 52 years she has worked at FIT\, her impact on the Fine Arts program\, its students\, and the college at large has been nothing short of profound. Daykin acquired these objects from artisans she met over the years and throughout her travels. Her collection has deeply informed her visual sensibilities and are reflected in the breadth and colorful influence of her creative practice and teaching. \nA panel discussion with Daykin\, her colleagues\, and former students will be scheduled at some date during the exhibition. \nThe Colorful Influence of Susan Daykin is curated by Fine Arts Associate Professor Joel Werring and an alumna from FIT’s Art Market Studies MA program\, Caroline Teck. \n\nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation. \nThe gallery is open 9 am to 5 pm daily. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Phygital Runway Show
DESCRIPTION:FIT DTech Lab partners with Digital Fashion Week to bring the Phygital Runway show with the (world’s first ever) live motion capture hologram courtesy of Future Front Row. \nFashion has always been more than the latest silhouette\, it is an art form that draws on cultural texture overlaid with eclectic creative and technical skills to support self-expression – the unique story of each individual. Layering the digital and physical allows us more rich and nuanced opportunities to tell a brand story. \nA hologram runway show redefines expectations as an immersion-first path forward for the fashion industry. The giant digital avatars simulate the fluid movements of models via real time motion capture on the runway. \nThe Phygital runway explores a brand’s strategic journey exhibiting simultaneous digital and physical fashion in a seamless layered experience. With 3D assets ranging from augmented reality to digital twins in Sandbox and Unreal Engine tools\, brands show not only a traditional runway collection\, but an evolved vision of customer engagement and the relationship of fashion with the games industry. \nFind more details on the Digital Fashion Week website. \nTickets are $50 for the general public; register here.\nTickets are FREE for the FIT community; register here with your FIT email.
