SUMMARY:Talking Trade at FIT: WITA on Career Pathways Panel
DESCRIPTION:The Washington International Trade Association (WITA) Academy\, in partnership with FIT’s Department of International Trade and Marketing\, presents a three-hour online event designed to teach FIT students about careers in international trade and business. \nStudents will gain insight from trade professionals\, pose questions to policymakers\, and learn about exciting career opportunities in international affairs\, business\, and trade. Students will come away with an understanding of the trade policy-making community\, the role of its key players\, and the opportunities for internships and careers available to them. \n\nSession 1\, 3:30–4:45 pm ET: will focus on career opportunities in the public sector\nSession 2\, 4:45–6 pm ET: will highlight private sector opportunities\n\nStudents that attended at least 50% of the sessions of the day will receive a free one-year membership to the Washington International Trade Association (WITA)\, a certificate of achievement\, and access to attend WITA online policy discussions free of charge for one year. \nFor questions about the event\, please contact the WITA staff at events@wita.org. \nThis event is for the FIT community only; attend virtually or in person; registration is required with an FIT email address.

SUMMARY:Walk to the Triangle Fire Memorial Unveiling
DESCRIPTION:On October 11\, a memorial to the victims of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire will be unveiled on the façade of the Asch/Brown Building on the corner of Washington Place and Greene Street where the fire took place in 1911\, almost halfway between the Draft Riots and March on Washington. We will meet at 10:30 to walk down to the ceremony together\, carrying shirtwaist banners\, handing out flyers\, and asking onlookers to join us as we go. \nSponsored by United College Employees of FIT. \nThis event is part of the 1863–1963–2023 Project: Civil Rights in FIT’s Neighborhood\, which documents the anniversaries of two pivotal events in U.S. civil rights history that took place near or on the FIT campus. \nThis event is for the FIT community; meet on West 27th Street in front of the Feldman Center Lobby at 10:30 am.

O’Neal talks about his book Illustrated Men: Drawing and Rendering the Male Fashion Figure. A book signing will follow. \nIllustrated Men is a how-to guide in the drawing and rendering of the male fashion figure. The book includes chapters on the use of watercolor\, marker\, pencil\, and digital tools in creating professional art. With over 300 illustrations from some of the most accomplished menswear artists today\, plus histories of fashionable men and menswear illustration\, Illustrated Men was written as a resource and guide to students and professionals alike. \nThis event is for the FIT community only.

SUMMARY:Globally Connected @ FIT: Sustainable Fashion and the Sea—Fish Skin as Ecological Resource
DESCRIPTION:Elisa Palomino\nLearn about new models of sustainable textiles in this conversation on connections between anthropology\, fashion\, and indigenous knowledge. \nElisa Palomino will introduce the transformation of marine waste into leather as an alternative raw material for fashion in contemporary sustainable fashion practice\, alleviating the pressure of over-produced textiles. Exploring issues related to the ingenuity of different Arctic cultures as repositories of the heritage of fish skin as a cultural and ecological resource\, Dr. Palomino seeks to activate new models of sustainable textiles\, making connections between anthropology\, fashion\, and indigenous knowledge. \nElisa Palomino\, PhD\, is a fashion designer with 25 years’ experience in the fashion industry at John Galliano and Christian Dior. Until recently\, Dr. Palomino was the BA Fashion Print pathway leader at Central Saint Martins\, UAL\, London. As an international fashion lecturer\, she was a Fulbright Scholar at the Smithsonian Institution’s Arctic Studies Center and held fellowships at the Library of Congress and at The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. \nPalomino will be in a conversation with Professor Sarah Mullins. Mullins is the assistant chair of the Footwear and Accessories Design Department at FIT. She teaches courses in accessories product design and development\, Adobe Illustrator\, and senior thesis. Mullins’s design experience specializes in handbags\, leather goods\, pattern design\, and children’s products. For more than 14 years\, she was a senior designer on Maclaren’s global product development team. In addition to teaching and designing\, Mullins has co-authored several books on making handbags and belts. She continues to make leather goods for distinct clients. The most specialized products she makes are hyena paws for Disney’s Broadway and touring productions of The Lion King. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.
