SUMMARY:Commemorating the Triangular Slave Trade: Billy Gerard Frank Venice Biennale 2022
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of Black History Month\, the UCE of FIT holds a virtual talk with multimedia artist Billy Gerard Frank. At this talk\, he will discuss his work for the forthcoming 2022 Venice Biennale. \nBilly Gerard Frank \nFrank was born in Grenada\, West Indies\, is a multimedia artist\, filmmaker\, production designer\, and founder of the Nova Frontier Film Festival & Lab\, showcasing and incubating the works of filmmakers and artists from and about the Global African Diaspora\, The Middle East\, Latin America. He is also a Lecturer in Directing and Design in the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale. Frank’s research-based practices mine and address issues of migration\, race\, and global politics\, relating to gender\, minority status\, and post-colonial subjects\, challenging normative discourses around them. He moved to London as a teenager\, where he began painting and exploring experimental video art and installation before moving to Brooklyn\, New York where he is now base. His mix-media artworks and films have been exhibited and screened in group and solo shows in museums and institutions like Brooklyn Museum (2020); Yale\, and international film festivals like the Berlinale\, Sundance\, among others. He represented Grenada at The 58th La Biennale di Venezia 2019 and has the honor of being one of the artists in the collective representing Grenada in the 2022 La Biennale once again. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; join via Webex on the date and time of the event.

DESCRIPTION:FIT Adjunct Assistant Professor Professor Daniel James Cole and NYU Assistant Professor Nancy Deihl will give an FIT Authors talk about their book\, The History of Modern Fashion. Discussion and Q&A to follow. \nThis book explores fashion not simply from an aesthetic point of view but also as a manifestation of social and cultural change. Focusing on fashion from 1850\, the authors consider the evolution of women’s wear\, menswear\, and children’s wear. The book looks at the dissemination of style and the mechanisms of change\, at the relationship between fashion and the visual\, applied\, and performing arts\, the intertwined relationship between fashion and popular culture\, the impact of new materials and technology\, and the growing globalization of style. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:A Yearning for Perfection
DESCRIPTION:Join a conversation between Tom Bronk (b. 1944) and John Paul Jang (AHMP ‘22). In his Op Art paintings\, Bronk explores ratio\, linearity\, and symmetry. His diagnosis of late stage Parkinson’s disease\, uncontrollable shaking\, and loss of balance does not stop his yearning for perfect geometry in his paintings. \nJohn Paul Jang is the senator of the Art History and Museum Professions program and co-founder of the Artchive series. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual presentation and discussion with with a group of artists who that participated in the exhibition Journal and Pattern: Jaclyn Burke\, Fine Arts ’22; Slavko Djuric\, book artist and staff technologist\, Fine Arts and Photography; Bil Donovan\, adjunct associate professor\, Illustration; Thomas Leach\, exhibition installer; Lauren Zodel\, assistant professor\, Fashion Design; and invited guest artists Woolpunk and herbalist and artist Donna Cleary. \nJournal and Pattern is on view in the Art and Design Gallery through February 27. The work on display includes crocheted installations\, fibrous stitchery\, handmade books\, collages\, theatrical garments\, costumes for dogs\, sketches from the COVID-19 lockdown\, illustrations of an extraordinary shoe collection\, a gigantic moss-like sculpture\, and a quilt.
