SUMMARY:Exhibition: Crafting Evolution: 10 Years of Fashion Study — Closes
DESCRIPTION:August 15–September 11 \nBorn and raised in Siberia\, Russia\, Jahnkoy is a New York–based visual artist whose work draws upon found materials and ready-made clothing to illustrate her ideas around consumerism\, racial and cultural inequality\, crafts\, and the political and economic restraints that surround it. She sees fashion as a powerful force to raise questions about the sustainability of the actual fashion system and seeks to bring awareness and raise consciousness among consumers about alternative\, more via modes of production\, distribution\, and consumption. \nJahnkoy’s hand-embellished Puma gear got her shortlisted for a 2017 LVMH Prize\, and now the artist has teamed up with the athletic wear brand for another collaboration\, now on view in the Art and Design Gallery. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:FIT Authors Talks: Ron Amato Presents 'The Box'
DESCRIPTION:Professor Ron Amato will give an author talk and presentation of his book of photography The Box. \nFocused on themes of isolation\, desire\, conflict and empowerment\, Ron Amato’s photographic series and book\, The Box\, speaks to human experiences of self-discovery and community building. Using a series of boxes to create visual metaphors\, Amato echoes his development from adolescence to adulthood through over 100 color\, and black-and-white photographs. Evoking first his youth in Brooklyn\, New York\, during the 1960s and 1970s\, moving through his coming out as a gay man\, and to his present position as a respected professional photographer and teacher\, Amato creates a vivid portrait of struggle and triumph. \nThis is an FIT Authors event. SUMMARY:New York Textile Month: "Threads: Changing Lives Stitch by Stitch" Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a screening of the documentary film Threads\, followed by a discussion with the filmmakers Cathy Stevaluk and FIT alumna Yasmine Dabbous. \nThreads tells the story of how Surayia Rahman\, a Bangladeshi artist\, transforms the ancient Bengali quilting tradition of kantha to help revive it\, and creates internationally recognized art.
