SUMMARY:Exhibition: Fabric In Fashion — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Traina-Norell\, “Indian sari” silk brocade dress\, circa 1955\, gift of Mildred Morton.\nDecember 4\, 2018–May 4\, 2019  \nFabric In Fashion explores the role played by textiles in forming the silhouette in Western fashion over the last 250 years. The examination of textiles is often separated from that of the fashionable silhouette\, yet historically\, textiles were as important as the cut of clothing in keeping up with current fashion. This exhibition will delve into the mechanics of textiles\, looking at how fibers and weaves build the materiality of fashion. It will also explore the cultural influence of fabric. The Western world’s demand for fashionable textiles of silk\, cotton\, wool\, and synthetics has had enormous repercussions across the globe. \nFabric In Fashion will highlight both clothing and flat textiles from the museum’s permanent collection\, examining how the physical properties of specific fabrics determine the way a piece of clothing interacts with the body\, as well as how the design and cultural associations of textiles reveal the social motivations that drive fashion forward. The exhibition is organized by Elizabeth Way\, assistant curator of costume.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: View Finder
DESCRIPTION:December 7–14 \nThe name View Finder is derived from the tool used on a camera for framing the composition of an image. As photographers\, there’s no one right way to take a photo and what to take it with; however\, the one consistency is our viewfinders. Regardless of whether it’s a full frame digital SLR\, a medium-format film camera\, or simply an iPhone\, this is how we all see our independent worlds and how we choose to capture them. \nView Finder features work by the junior class in the Photography BFA program at FIT. As part of the Photographic Concepts and Exhibition course\, this show is an opportunity to exhibit the work created this semester without boundaries on presentation. It highlights the topics the class has covered\, such as tableau\, intimate narrative\, and deadpan. In addition to this\, students have also considered different ways in which to manifest our creations for the public from large-scale printing to handheld installation. As artists\, they were challenged with producing content that not only fulfills the requirements for the curriculum\, but also articulates our each student’s style and expression. \nFor this exhibition\, two outside creators were also invited to participate: course professor Elizabeth Bick and notable photographer John Cyr. \nProfessor Bick’s work is relevant to the show because of her tableau aesthetic. Her pieces are in collaboration with an artist that makes work out of old hotel bed sheets. She’s capturing the movement of the sheets and artist in a stop motion format. \nCyr’s Developer Trays catalog famous photographer’s trays using pristine deadpan technique to properly showcase the one consistency among darkroom creators: their developer trays. Both artists demonstrate the range of genres we’ve applied this semester and complement the work of ours we’ve chosen to present to you. We welcome you to look through our viewfinder and experience our interpretation of these concepts. \n  \nSTUDENT WORK BY: \nSARAH ABOUELKER | BRIANA BATTAGLIA | DAWN BAUER | SHANE BUNDRANT| STEVEN EVANS \nRYAN FRIGILLANA | KAITLYN GARCIA | THOMAS GIARRAFFA| KRISTEN HARNER | JESSY HERZOG KAHDEEM JEFFERSON | PAMELA MARTINEZ | XAVIER ANGEL MARTINEZ | JEAN MILLER \nNI OUYANG | ASHLEY PAOLELLA | JULIANO RIZKALLAH | SHANNON SEARSON | NIA JOI SPENCER \nGABRIELLA SPIEGEL | ANDREA ZALKIN \nGUEST ARTISTS: \nELIZABETH BICK | JOHN CYR
