SUMMARY:Film Screening: Blaxploitalian: 100 Years of Blackness in Italian Cinema
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures presents a screening of the documentary BlaxploItalian 100 Years of Blackness in Italian Cinema (2016)\, followed by a Q&A with director and activist Fred Kuwornu. \nFred Kuwornu is an Italian-Ghanaian filmmaker and activist best known for his documentaries Inside Buffalo (2010)\, about the Black American soldiers who participated in the liberation of Italy during World War II\, and 18 Ius Soli (2012)\, about the children of immigrants in Italy and their struggles for legal and social recognition. \nBlaxploitalian: One Hundred Years of Blackness in Italian Cinema  recounts the century-long yet underappreciated history of people of African descent in Italian cinema. Romero is also professor of Spanish and chair of the department of Modern Languages and Cultures at Marist. It will be accompanied by a guided tasting flight of honey from New York City and around the world. Still from The Commute.       \nFIT and the Department of Social Sciences hosts a panel discussion on the successes and failures of the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) in providing accessibility to wheelchair users\, in compliance with the federal Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.  Panelists will discuss their efforts to push the MTA to improve wheelchair access: \n\nYannick Benjamin\, co-founder of Wheeling Forward\nSasha Blair-Goldensohn\, Google\nJaqi Cohen\, NYPIRG Straphangers Campaign\nGeorge Gallego\, founder and CEO of Wheels of Progress and star of The Commute\nEdmund O’Donnell\, senior vice president\, Goodwill of NY/NJ\n\nTwo short films will be screened\, The Commute\, which was produced by Goodwill of NY/NJ\, and a video that accompanied a New York Times editorial about MTA wheelchair accessibility by Blair-Goldensohn on March 29\, 2017. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
