SUMMARY:Cross-Cultural Encounters in Art and Design: African Artists I Admire
DESCRIPTION:The Cross-Cultural Encounters in Art and Design series presents “African Artists I Admire.” Ian Alteveer\, an assistant curator in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, will talk about African artists of the diaspora and African American artists. Several exhibitions focusing on the career of African artists will be analyzed to help emerging artists from diverse backgrounds develop their art projects. \n*This event was originally scheduled as part of Black History Month on February 9\, 2017\, but was cancelled due to inclement weather.

SUMMARY:Communicating Climate Change with James McClintock and Adam Vines
DESCRIPTION:Join climate change expert James McClintock and celebrated author Adam Vines to a presentation about how to communicate climate change—how to talk about it\, integrate it into your artistic practice\, how to write grants to get people to fund research\, and more. This presentation is the culmination of work the two have been doing with students and faculty this semester\, which included videos\, presentations\, and readings in many FIT courses. McClintock and Vines were brought here as part of a Sustainability Grant awarded to Amy Lemmon\, professor\, English and Communication Studies\, and Arthur Kopelman\, Distinguished Service Professor\, Science and Math\, for their proposal “Communicating Climate Change: Collaboration in the Arts and Sciences.” \nFor more information about the presenters\, see our article about the two experts and Communicating Climate Change here. \nThis events is free and open to the public\, but reservation is required; RSVP here.

DESCRIPTION:The Department of Advertising and Marketing Communications with the Jay and Patty Baker School of Business and Technology present two speakers—Mark Hannant and Serge Perignon—who will discuss emerging markets as important drivers of global economic growth. Hannant and Perignon are professional communicators working at the intersection of developed and emerging economies. They will talk about the way in which globalization has created the demand for a new breed of communications expert and the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in this exciting\, but complex\, space. \n \nMark Hannant is the founder and managing director of magenta (teammagenta.com). Hannant is a creative services entrepreneur whose career has been spent in journalism\, corporate communications\, and branding. He has run businesses in Europe\, the U.S.\, and Asia. In 2009\, convinced of the importance of emerging markets\, he moved to India. He founded magenta\, a fresh-thinking creative agency. magenta offers a range of communications planning\, content\, and design services to Indian mulitnationals creating international footprints and foreign investors in emerging markets. Hannant will speak about the challenges and opportunities of doing business in the world’s fastest-growing large economy. \n \nSerge Perignon is the global head of marketing and thought leadership for consulting and enterprise solutions at Tata Consulting Services (tcs.com). He is an international B2B marketing leader with over 20 years of experience. Perignon leads marketing\, thought leadership\, analyst relations\, and communications for the global business unit. He also focuses on thought leadership marketing strategy and programs on behalf of the entire organization\, having co-led seven global trend studies since 2011\, and directing the firm’s management journal\, Perspectives. TCS is a global IT services\, consulting\, and business solutions organization. Kyle Staver: Icarus\, 2015\, oil on canvas\, 42 x 50 in.       \nARTSpeak 2016-17 is an interdisciplinary program presented by the departments of Fine Arts and History of Art that consists of lectures and a panel discussion on the theme of The Presence of Art History in the Artist’s Mind.  The theme explores the impact of art history on the contemporary artist’s studio practice. \n\nOn Wednesday\, April 19\, ARTSpeak presents a panel discussion with three artists—Derek Fordjour\, Sharon Horvath\, and Kyle Staver—discussing this year’s art historical theme. The panel will be moderated by art historian Jennifer Samet.\n\n\n\nDerek Fordjour was born in Memphis\, TN\, to parents of Ghanaian heritage\, and he received his MFA from Hunter College. He has exhibited his work in the U.S. and Europe\, and is currently artist-in-residence at Sugar Hill Museum in New York.\nSharon Horvath received her BFA from Cooper Union and her MFA from Tyler School of Art. Her awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Rome Prize. She is professor of art at Purchase College\, SUNY.\nKyle Staver received her BFA from Minneapolis College of Art and Design and her MFA from Yale University. A recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and an American Academy of Arts and Letters Purchase Prize\, Staver recently exhibited her work at Kent Fine Art in New York.\nJennifer Samet teaches art history at the New York Studio School and at the New School. She writes the column Beer With a Painter for Hyperallergic\, and is co-director of Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects in New York.\n\n\n\n          Derek Fordjour. SUMMARY:Employee Wellness Program: Maintaining a Healthy Back and Neck
DESCRIPTION:The Employee Wellness Program holds a lecture with licensed physical therapist/spine specialist Michael Post from NYU Langone Medical Center to provide useful information to prevent and minimize back and neck pain. Post will discuss basic spine anatomy\, personal risk factors for injury\, as well as recommendations for preventing injury. He will also teach some basic exercises and strategies to maintain a healthy\, pain-free back. \n \nMichael Post\, PT\, DPT\, Cert. MDT\, received his doctorate from Ithaca College and has worked for nearly three years at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist and is certified in mechanical diagnosis and therapy. Currently working at NYU Langone’s Center for Musculoskeletal Care\, Post works to reduce pain\, maintain pain reduction while recovering function\, prevent recurrent injury\, and educate clients on self-treatment of future injuries. \nFunding for the Employee Wellness Program is provided by the Student Faculty Corporation. \nThe lecture is free\, but reservation is required and seating is limited; RSVP here.

Model: Mona Bear.This symposium brings experts to discuss issues around Native fashion including\, its history\, cultural appropriation and examples of creative collaborations. \nNative/American Fashion: Inspiration\, Appropriation\, and Cultural Identity will explore  fashion as a creative endeavor and an expression of cultural identity; the history of Native fashion; issues of problematic cultural appropriation in the field; and examples of creative collaborations and best practices between Native designers and fashion brands. The program features distinguished academic and legal scholars\, and fashion designers and editors\, including FIT faculty members Anna Blume and Daniel James Cole\, along with Joe Horse Capture\, Adrienne Keene\, Karen Kramer\, Jessica Metcalfe\, Lynette Nylander\, Virgil Ortiz\, Sherry Farrell Racette\, Susan Scafidi\, and Timothy Shannon. Moderated by Kathleen Ash-Milby\, and FIT faculty members Eileen Karp and Amy Werbel. \nThe symposium is held as a part of the exhibition Native Fashion Now currently on view at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in New York (NMAI)\, and is sponsored by the NMAI and FIT. \nThis event is free and open to the public. It will be held at NMAI–New York at 1 Bowling Green\, in lower Manhattan.
