SUMMARY:Jock Peters\, Eleanor LeMaire\, and the Modern Department Store
DESCRIPTION:Christopher Long. \nRetail design\, fashion merchandising\, set design\, furniture\, packaging\, interiors\, architecture\, fine art rendering… little-known architect and designer Jock Peters\, a largely forgotten figure of early Los Angeles modernism\, did it all. Professor Christopher Long presents his new book titled Jock Peters\, Architecture and Design: The Varieties of Modernism by Bauer and Dean Publishers. The book is a visually rich portrait of an architect whose most internationally lauded creations include the lavish commercial interiors for the iconic Bullock’s Wilshire store in Los Angeles and the tragically forgotten Hollander department store in New York City. \nAmong Peters’s early work in Germany are the Levantehaus and Karstadt department stores\, a magnificent glass pavilion from 1916\, and his work for Peter Behrens after the war. But\, the architect’s most accomplished and compelling work came after 1922 when he settled in Southern California. \nLong’s study on early modernism includes material from the architect’s personal archive\, still in family hands. The remarkable images in the book—more than 250 historic photographs\, etchings\, watercolors\, and drawings—alongside Long’s narrative\, demonstrate how Peters\, despite his early death\, managed to leave his mark on the modernist landscape in Southern California at a time when the new style was just emerging. \nChristopher Long is Martin S. Kermacy Centennial Professor of Architectural History at the University of Texas at Austin. He has published widely on modern architecture and design in Central Europe and the United States. \nJoin using this Zoom Meeting link:\nhttps://utexas.zoom.us/j/2128132500?pwd=a2ViK2ZMY3BWQ3ZMZjNjZVVZN2pzZz09 \nMeeting ID: 212 813 2500\nPasscode: 90918 \nA version of this event was originally scheduled for April 18 and April 25; this is the rescheduled event.  \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; join using the Zoom link here.

SUMMARY:Merchants of Style: Art and Fashion After Warhol
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an event to launch Merchants of Style: Art and Fashion After Warhol on Tuesday\, May 9. Natasha Degen\, chair of Art Market Studies\, will discuss her new book with curator and faculty member Alexandra Schwartz at 6 pm. A reception will follow. \nMerchants of Style explores the accelerating convergence of art and fashion\, looking at the interplay of artists and designers—and the role of institutions\, both public and commercial—that has brought about this marriage of aesthetic industries. Degen argues that one figure more than any other anticipated this moment: Andy Warhol. \nBeginning with an overview of art and fashion’s deeply entwined histories before picking up where Warhol left off\, Merchants of Style tells the story of art’s emboldened forays into commerce and fashion’s growing embrace of art. As the two industries draw closer together than ever before\, this book addresses urgent questions about what the future holds. \nDegen recently published a guest essay in The New York Times related to Merchants of Style titled “The Met Gala\, or When Fashion Consumes Art.”  \nThis event is free and open to the public; REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Designing Women: Fashion Creators and Their Interiors — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Paquin\, evening cape\, pink silk chiffon and metal sequins\, 1897\, France\, museum purchase\, P83.19.7\nNovember 30–May 14\, 2023\nFashion and Textile History Gallery \nModern female fashion designers ardently incorporated interior decoration into their professional and personal lives. This phenomenon became increasingly evident beginning in the late nineteenth century\, as more women founded important couture houses in Paris\, London and New York. At the same time\, the field of interior decoration became a viable profession\, thanks in large part to innovative ladies on both sides of the Atlantic. \nDesigning Women: Fashion Creators and Their Interiors is the first exhibition to explore the connection between these disciplines. Approximately 70 garments from The Museum at FIT’s permanent collection will be on view alongside photographic images of the most compelling interiors created for leading female fashion designers from the 1890s to the 1970s. Featured creators include Jeanne Paquin\, Lucile\, Jeanne Lanvin\, Madeleine Vionnet\, Pauline Potter (later Baroness Pauline de Rothschild)\, and many others. \nPresented chronologically\, the selection of objects and images will include a diverse range of spaces\, from luxe couture salons and modest ateliers to private homes. Together the fashions and photographs will address how and why interior decoration became such an integral part of fashion’s leading designing women. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: ¡Moda Hoy! Latin American and Latinx Fashion Design Today — Opens
DESCRIPTION:May 31–November 5\, 2023\nFashion and Textile History Gallery \nFor decades\, fashion designers of Latin American descent such as Carolina Herrera\, Oscar de la Renta\, and Haider Ackermann have been central figures of the fashion industry. Their successes have paved the way for new generations of talented designers including Gabriela Hearst\, Carla Fernández\, and Willy Chavarria. These represent only a few of the emerging designers who are making their mark on the fashion scene by creating for famous fashion houses\, winning prestigious awards\, and dressing celebrity clients. \n¡Moda Hoy! Latin American and Latinx Fashion Design Today includes creators from Latin American countries\, as well as designers of Latin American heritage living and working in the United States and Europe who are often referred to as Hispanic\, Latino/Latina\, or the gender-neutral term Latinx. Featuring more than 60 objects from the museum’s permanent collection\, including many new acquisitions\, the exhibition rejects the notion of a singular Latin American style\, to focus instead on the diversity of talent present today in Latin America and its diaspora. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.
