SUMMARY:A Work of Art: Fashion Design AAS Exhibition — Opens
DESCRIPTION:December 7–January 29\, 2023 \nFor the Fashion Design AAS program’s capstone projects\, students were asked to think of themselves as fashion designers collaborating with famous artists for their designs. They visited New York City’s world-famous museums and art galleries\, drawing inspiration from sculpture\, paintings\, and even poems to create garments with movement\, volume\, space\, and light. This exhibition presents selections that speak for themselves emotionally—like a work of art. Included are works selected for Critic Awards by industry mentors who have worked alongside students throughout the semester: two in fashion illustration and three in apparel design. \nLearn more about FIT’s Fashion Design AAS program. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:The saying goes that “two heads are better than one.” In fashion design\, working together with a common goal is an invaluable strategy that is sure to produce incredible results. Over the course of my journey\, I have had the privilege of working with some amazing talents who have taught me so much about the industry\, talent exploration and most importantly taught me about myself. In this segment\, I will be sharing some of the major projects I have collaborated on and the lessons I’ve learnt through them. Join me as I define what collaboration means to me\, how to approach individuals and companies for collaborations and how to utilize collaborations effectively to elevate your story. —Papa Oppong \nBorn on March 11\, 1992\, in Accra Ghana\, Papa Oppong Bediako is a fashion Illustrator\, fashion designer\, and a New Age artist. Papa’s fashion journey kicked off at a very early age by way of playing with Barbie dolls. Through his work\, Papa seeks to show the world that Africa is a goldmine of talent and potential\, and can be as influential in fashion as the rest of the world is. Papa has designed RTW looks for West African textile giant Woodin\, illustrated for makeup giant MAC Cosmetics\, art directed and styled a fashion show for Adidas (Ghana) and worked with several African brands including ethical fashion brand Studio 189. The young designer has also gained a lot of praise and accolades from media giants such as CNN and Forbes\, the latter naming him as one of 15 young Africans rebranding the continent. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Renewal of Symbols: Contemporary Minhwa Paintings — Closes
DESCRIPTION:August 25–December 16 \nMinhwa is traditional Korean folk art from the Chosun era (1392-1910) painted on paper or canvas in a simplistic but expressive style executed in bold colors. Translated as “painting of the people” or “popular painting\,” it is often the work of anonymous craftsmen and shows figures from folk mythology and legends\, symbols of happiness\, wealth and health\, and scenes of everyday life. Minhwa is known for expressing its emotions using symbolism\, optimism\, humor\, and satire. DESCRIPTION:Tom Ford\, evening sandals\, spring 2012\, USA\, gift of Tom Ford International\, 2013.10.1\nSeptember 1–December 31\, 2022\nSpecial Exhibitions Gallery \nShoes: Anatomy\, Identity\, Magic explores our physical\, social\, and psychological relationship with shoes. The exhibition begins with a pair of baby shoes\, indicating how shoes accompany us on the journey of life. \nThe theme of anatomy emphasizes how we stand and move differently when we wear\, say\, sneakers rather than stilettos. Peep-toe shoes and thigh-high boots also draw attention to different parts of our anatomy. \nThe theme of identity emphasizes how we tend to associate different shoe styles and brands with different types of people. High-heeled shoes have long been associated with erotic femininity\, and stilettos\, in particular\, are identified with the femme fatale. By contrast\, rubber-soled sneakers were invented for sports\, so they are identified with athletes. \nThe theme of magic emphasizes how we may unconsciously believe that the right pair of shoes will change our lives\, as Cinderella’s glass slippers captured the attention of a prince. Because professional athletes often wear sneakers\, we may decide to buy a pair of Nike Air Jordans\, hoping\, like Lil’ Bow Wow in the film Like Mike\, that they will “magically” enhance our physical prowess. \nThe exhibition features more than 300 of the 5\,000 pairs of shoes\, boots\, sandals\, and sneakers in the museum’s permanent collection\, aka “the closet.” \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.
