SUMMARY:Virtual Artist Talk: Anabella Bergero on Constructing Identities
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual presentation and discussion with Anabella Bergero\, Fashion Design MFA ’20\, and Tanya Melendez-Escalante\, senior curator of Education and Public Programs from The Museum at FIT. Bergero won the inaugural SUNY Performing Arts Creation and Curation Prize for her exhibition proposal. Constructing Identities is part of the Journal and Pattern exhibition in the Art and Design Gallery through February 27. \nBorn in Argentina and raised in Mexico\, Bergero researched her heritage and created garments that explored Latinx and Latin American culture and gender identity. For her exhibition\, Bergero expanded upon a personal narrative to create a broader cultural landscape that includes photographic wallpapers on the theme of the quinceañera and Mexican wooden folk masks. Bergero created characters “as a portal to certain aspects of Latinx and Latin American culture” and designed a dress for each. \n“I traced back the femininity I inherited\, and I’m owning the kind of femininity I want to build for myself\,” she writes. “This project was building space for different configurations of identity by first acknowledging that we are not this monolith of how we were born. We have multiple pieces we can play with.” \nThis event is for the FIT community only; registration required—REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:New Curating: Justice\, Museums\, and the Power of the Grand Narrative
DESCRIPTION:Three panelists engage in a conversation on innovative aspects and new ways of curating histories and art. How can we reach audiences in a meaningful way to engage with objects and histories? \nLed by Art History and Museum Professions Department Junior Joi Berry (’23) and supported through a Grant for a Black Futures sponsored by FIT project\, this conversation builds upon the excitement and enthusiasm created by past exhibitions curated by Berry. View Berry’s Black Futures exhibition here.  \nThis event is part of FIT’s Black History Month activities. SUMMARY:Globally Connected @ FIT: Designed for the Future: Creating with the Planet in Mind
DESCRIPTION:Traditionally the fashion industry has operated on through a linear economy\, following the take-make-waste trend for products. Our current climate crisis demands a shift in societal patterns\, creation and consumption. The shift to a circular economy offers a promising solution to waste reduction and resource preservation. FIT alumni Riley Anderson-Lusher (FIT ‘20)\, founder of Guilt Free Goods and a former Cultural Fellow\, and professor Todd Blumenthal\, who teaches Sustainability in Merchandising at FIT\, are in a conversation with Camila Quiroga and Stephanie Baljet\, Cultural Fellows at FIT. \nRiley Lusher\, Fashion Design ’20; OUR CHOICE\, visual designer; Choose2B Inspirational Apparel\, operations management \nRiley is a designer and maker working to explore the interconnectedness of all beings\, and create work that honors and respects these relationships. She would like to shift her central focus of creation from simply lessening her environmental impact to actually benefiting all beings and the environment from her work’s inception. She enjoys learning new trades\, from carpentry\, to web development\, to 3D rendering. Regardless of any professional title or position\, Riley is a passionate problem-solver\, designer\, and maker. Moving forward she hopes to be able to harness these passions in ways that will promote growth and vitality. \nTodd Blumenthal\, assistant professor\, Fashion Business Management \nA visionary leader and master storyteller\, Todd teaches with a highly effective balance of business skills\, innovative creativity\, an entrepreneurial mindset\, and refined aesthetics. Throughout his corporate career\, his focus is on the training and development of the special hard and soft skills and competencies necessary in the New Economy for professional team and management development. For more than 25 years in the fashion industry\, Todd has partnered with global brands including: Nike\, Victoria’s Secret\, The Gap\, and Ralph Lauren developing an expertise for sustainable product commercialization. \n\nAbout Globally Connected @ FIT \n\nGlobally Connected @ FIT is a series of 45-minute virtual discussions led by students\, faculty\, and alumni to advance global education at FIT in our world with limited mobility.
