SUMMARY:Exhibition: Eleanor Lambert: Empress of Seventh Avenue — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Halston\, evening gown\, 1972\, USA\, gift of Lauren Bacall\, 74.107.30.\nThe Museum at FIT is temporarily closed.  \nView the online exhibition here. \nMarch 3–28\, 2020\nGallery FIT\n \nAs the “original fashion publicist\,” Eleanor Lambert was a defining character of 20th century American fashion. Over her 75-year career\, Lambert helped establish a number of organizations and initiatives that shaped the American fashion landscape\, including the Council of Fashion Designers of America\, the International Best Dressed List\, the Coty American Fashion Critics’ Award\, and Press Week\, which evolved into the current New York Fashion Week. Lambert worked to elevate the American fashion designer to celebrity status\, and her clientele included such influential designers as Stephen Burrows\, Halston\, and Claire McCardell. Eleanor Lambert: Empress of Seventh Avenue is the first exhibition to explore her tireless work in establishing New York as an international fashion capital\, while simultaneously pioneering the profession of fashion publicist. \n\nThe exhibition will be accompanied by three events in March 2020: “All About Eleanor\,” a documentary screening and panel discussion with Moses Berkson\, the director of the film and Lambert’s grandson and her former personal assistants John Tiffany\, author of Eleanor Lambert: Still Here\, and James LaForce\, CEO and founder of LaForce Communications; a “Fashion Media: Discourse on Diversity” panel discussion; and The International Best-Dressed List: The Official Story book talk with Amy Fine Collins. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:ARTSpeak Lecture: Artist Naudline Pierre in Conversation with Curator Legacy Russell
DESCRIPTION:Naudline Pierre\, Lest You Fall\, 2019\, oil on canvas\, 96 x 60 inches. Naudline Pierre. Photo by Nathan Bajar. Legacy Russell. Photo by Daniel Dorsa. \nThe ARTSpeak Lecture Series hosts Naudline Pierre in conversation with curator Legacy Russell. Pierre is the Studio Museum in Harlem’s artist in residence and Legacy Russell is the museum’s associate curator of exhibitions. The central subject of Naudline Pierre’s paintings serves as an alter ego\, an unearthly representation rendered in a spectrum of colors. As the artist has stated about her work\, she is “acknowledging the incredible history contained with my body and transferring it to a visual language co-opted from the dominant Western art historical canon.” Pierre’s residency at the Studio Museum is through Sept. 1\, 2020. The works produced during her residency will be presented at MoMA PS1 in the summer of 2020. \nBrooklyn-based Naudline Pierre has works in many permanent collections including the Dallas Museum of Art\, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles\, and the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. Her exhibitions include For I Am With You Until the End of Time (2019)\, at Shulamit Nazarian in Los Angeles; Touch Not My Beloved (2018)\, at New Image Art in Los Angeles; and Visitors (2017)\, at Thierry Goldberg Gallery in New York. Pierre has also had a residency at the Terra Foundation for American Art in France and was the recipient of the Estée Lauder Merit Award from the New York Academy of Art. \nBorn and raised in New York City\, Legacy Russell is a writer and curator whose recent exhibitions include Projects 110 : Michael Armitage\, organized with Thelma Golden and The Studio Museum in Harlem at MoMA (2019); Dozie Kanu : Function (2019); Chloë Bass : Wayfinding (2019); Radical Reading Room (2019) at The Studio Museum in Harlem; and MOOD: Studio Museum Artists in Residence 2018–19 (2019) at MoMA PS1. Russell’s ongoing academic work and research focuses on gender\, performance\, digital selfdom\, internet idolatry\, and new media ritual. She is the recipient of the Thoma Foundation 2019 Arts Writing Award in Digital Art and a 2020 Rauschenberg Residency Fellow. Her first book\, Glitch Feminism\, is forthcoming from Verso Books in fall 2020. \nThis event is part of the ARTSpeak 2019–20 lecture series presented by the Department of Fine Arts and and has been made possible with support from the School of Art and Design. \nFor more information\, visit blog.fitnyc.edu/artspeak. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Film and Media Screening Series: 'My Art\,' with Laurie Simmons
DESCRIPTION:The Film and Media Screening Series will present My Art (2016) with director Laurie Simmons; she will participate in a Q&A after the film. \nMy Art tells the tale of the frustrated New York City artist Ellie\, who hopes to find inspiration as she house-sits for a friend in upstate New York. She turns the adjoining barn into her workplace\, staging elaborate recreations of classic movie scenes\, ranging from Some Like It Hot to A Clockwork Orange. Business unexpectedly evolves into pleasure when Ellie invites three local men to participate in her art. The film puts a devastatingly funny lens on such subjects as success\, ageism\, loneliness\, dating\, collaboration\, and ruthlessness. \nLaurie Simmons is an acclaimed photographer\, known for her intricately staged domestic scenes with dolls\, costumed dancers\, and ventriloquist dummies\, who also makes moving image art\, including 2006’s Meryl Streep–led The Music of Regret. Her work blends psychological\, political\, and conceptual approaches to art making\, transforming photography’s propensity to objectify people (especially women) into a sustained critique of the medium. In My Art\, she takes cues from her daughter [and co-star] Lena Dunham’s brand of acerbic wit and acutely feminist point of view for this comedy of self-realization. Featuring Parker Posey\, Barbara Sukowa\, and Broadway legend Blair Brown\, My Art is ultimately Simmons’s show\, repurposing familiar romantic comedy tropes with an endearing female protagonist. \nThe Film and Media Screening Series is supported by the School of Liberal Arts\, and the departments of Film\, Media and Performing Arts\, English and Communication Studies\, and Modern Languages and Cultures. \nAll Film and Media Screening Series films are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Eleanor Lambert: Empress of Seventh Avenue — Closes

Over her 75-year career\, Lambert helped establish a number of organizations and initiatives that shaped the American fashion landscape\, including the Council of Fashion Designers of America\, the International Best Dressed List\, the Coty American Fashion Critics’ Award\, and Press Week\, which evolved into the current New York Fashion Week. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Vanishing Community\, Vanishing Cultures: The Yörüks of Taurus Mountains\, Turkey — Closes
DESCRIPTION:The Gladys Marcus Library is temporarily closed.  \nFebruary 3–March 31\, 2020 \nVanishing Community\, Vanishing Cultures: The Yörüks of Taurus Mountains\, Turkey was inaugurated by the photographer and professor Praveen K. Chaudhry\, Social Sciences\, along with ethnographer Souzeina Mushtaq. Chaudhry and Mushtaq have been working on the issues of nomads and weavers in Kashmir and Tibet for more than a decade\, and recently started working on Yörük community in the Taurus Mountains in Turkey. The ongoing visual ethnographic research details the impact of migration and globalization on these nomadic communities and documents their daily lives. It also puts a face to this invisible community and their vanishing culture. \nThe idea of a modern state birthed the notion of citizenship\, which enforced the separation of legal citizens and the “others.” Historically speaking\, nomadic communities did not belong to any marked territory because their lifestyle dictated them to migrate from one place to another in search of pastures. The creation of borders and the idea of belonging to a particular state created a complex identity crisis for nomadic communities\, rendering them invisible in the socio-political scenario of the modern state. \nWith the endless information overload\, the issues of nomads and the weavers get shelved. The individuals are reduced to statistics. This exhibition attempts to humanize nomads and the weavers as they negotiate their changing lifestyles in this globalized world. It invites viewers to be a part of their journey and participate in the discourses about home\, belonging\, and statehood. \nThis exhibition is co-sponsored by the Presidential Scholars Program; Gladys Marcus Library; History of Art Department; Social Sciences Department; Global Fashion Management Program; School of Graduate Studies; and School of Liberal Arts. Vanishing Community\, Vanishing Cultures was also on view at Museo de La Ciudad de Cuernavaca (MuCIC) September 2–30\, 2019\, where it was sponsored by Centro Morelense de las Artes del Estado de Morelos\, Cuernavaca\, Mexico.
