SUMMARY:Visiting Author Talk: Simeon Marsalis
DESCRIPTION:Simeon Marsalis. SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Future Is Immersive — Opens
DESCRIPTION:March 15–April 26 \nThis immersive exhibition at FIT will show how artistic virtual reality can change how patients react to treatment. FIT artists and technicians\, using Google Tilt Brush\, have created artwork\, which will be on view\, in a “fourth dimension.” VR and art impact the patient experience during treatment and beyond. \nArtist Tom Christopher‘s entire studio where the VR paintings were created\, with the help of FIT students\, will be recreated at FIT for a complete immersive experience. A visitor will also be able to put on a VR headset and be transported to a brave new world of artistic virtual reality that begins with a pencil and ends up calming and distracting patients\, relieving the sensation of pain and is sometimes a tool for healing completely. \n\nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation.

SUMMARY:Film and Media Screening Series: 'The Punk Singer\,' with Sini Anderson
DESCRIPTION:The Film and Media Screening Series will present The Punk Singer (2017) with director Sini Anderson; she will participate in a Q&A after the film. \nThe Punk Singer is a documentary film about feminist singer and activist Kathleen Hanna who fronted the bands Bikini Kill and Le Tigre\, and who was a central figure in the riot grrrl movement. The film combines a combination of interviews and archival footage\, tracing the life and career of Hanna from her troubled upbringing\, through her riot grrrl zines\, to her coining of the phrase “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for Kurt Cobain\, to her solo career as Julie Ruin. \nSini Anderson is an award-winning film director\, producer\, video art maker\, and feminist art activist who lives in New York City. Her first feature-length film\, The Punk Singer premiered at SXSW in 2013 and was acquired by IFC Films. The Punk Singer received a theatrical release in 111 American cities and in 25 countries around the world. \nAnderson is in the final phase of her second feature length film\, So Sick (2014-2019). The documentary is an exhaustive look at women who are suffering so called “mystery illnesses” and struggling to stay afloat in their lives and careers. The film uncovers infuriating truths behind women’s health care and questions an American health system that does little to dispel myths about “hysterical women.” In 2018\, Anderson was commissioned by LACMA Productions to direct a short documentary about American photographer Catherine Opie. The film premiered on Nov 3\, 2018\, at LACMA’s annual Art+Film Gala\, honoring Opie and Guillermo del Toro. LACMA Productions has approved an extended director’s cut and the film is currently being submitted to national and international film festivals. \nThe Film and Media Screening Series is supported by the Diversity Council\, the Student-Faculty Corporation\, the School of Liberal Arts\, and the departments of Film\, Media and Performing Arts\, English and Communication Studies\, and Modern Languages and Cultures. \nAll screenings are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Threads of Bondage\, Invisibility\, and Style Influence: Hidden African American Contributions to American Couture (Revisited) — Closes
DESCRIPTION:February 11–March 31 \nIt is estimated that between 1525 and 1866 some 12.5 to 15 million African men\, women\, and children were violently forced from Western and Central Africa into brutal captivity to provide labor for the Western Hemisphere. Approximately 450\,000 of the 10.5 million who survived the overseas voyages were sent to North America to be enslaved. Within this environment developed highly skilled and valued enslaved dressmakers and seamstresses. The exhibition is in tribute to the many unrecognized women who but for their bondage would have been recognized as “designers.” \nItems on view are provided courtesy of the Leonard Davis collection. \nThe exhibition is located on the west side of the fourth floor corridor connecting the Business and Liberal Arts Center and the Dubinsky Student Center.
