From rug weavers in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains and block printers in India’s Golden Triangle to Appalachian broom makers in Kentucky and recycled-glass blowers in Kenya\, the film showcases craftspeople whose work carries generations of skill\, culture\, and creativity. DESCRIPTION:February 2–16\, Goodman Center Lobby\nFebruary 9–28\, Goodman Center\, Room D223  \nThis 3D virtual fashion exhibition presents 28 looks created by Professor Jennifer Lee\, Ph.D. (Fashion Business Management\, FIT). The exhibition brings together traditional African ensembles from prestigious museum collections alongside contemporary reinterpretations from The Museum at FIT\, curated by Elizabeth Way\, Ph.D.\, and designed by legendary fashion designers from eight African countries: Côte d’Ivoire\, the Democratic Republic of Congo\, Ethiopia\, Ghana\, Kenya\, Mali\, Nigeria\, and South Africa. \nEach look is meticulously 3D modeled and interwoven with the stories of cultural trailblazers whose lives and legacies have inspired global audiences. SUMMARY:The Barneys Oral Histories: A Symposium
DESCRIPTION:This event was originally scheduled for Feb. 23. This is the rescheduled date.  \n \nDeveloped in response to a perceived sense of loss surrounding the closing of Barneys New York\, a beloved institution. The Barneys Oral Histories were created to preserve memory and meaning. These interviews give voice to the people who worked there\, buyers\, creative directors\, advertising executives\, and visual merchandizers\, whose labor shaped Barneys’ singular identity. \nThe Barneys Oral Histories Symposium examines shopping in New York from the 1980s till its closure and the production of New York culture through the department store catalogs. It also explores the Fashion Calendar and how parties\, press and publicity at Barneys helped construct a cultural ecosystem that extended far beyond the retail spaces. \nSpeakers at the event will include FIT and NYU faculty members and former Barneys employees. \nThis event is sponsored by FIT’s Special Collections and College Archive\, Gladys Marcus Library\, the Art History and Museum Professions program\, the Art History and Museum Professions Association\, and the Fashion History Club. \nThis is the rescheduled date after the original event was canceled due to weather.  \nThis event is free and open to the public.  \n RSVP FOR THE SYMPOSIUM

SUMMARY:'The Re in Refuge' with Author Adrianne Kalfopoulou
DESCRIPTION:Adrianne Kalfopoulou will read from and discuss The re in refuge\, a linked essay collection that examines refuge in its many forms: emotional\, political\, cultural\, and geographic. Written alongside the unfolding European refugee crisis\, the book moves between personal narrative\, history\, and social critique\, attending closely to questions of belonging\, exile\, and ethical responsibility. The event will feature a reading\, a short talk\, and a moderated Q&A. Kalfopoulou will also be signing books directly after the program. \nAdrianne Kalfopoulou is the author of three poetry collections\, most recently A History of Too Much\, and three prose collections including On the Gaze: Dubai and Its New Cosmopolitanisms. Her work has appeared in World Literature Today\, The Harvard Review online\, Hotel Amerika\, and Futures: Poetry of the Greek Crisis\, among others. Her essays in The re in refuge were written over a decade and are informed by her lived experience in Athens during the European refugee crisis. DESCRIPTION:Coleen Scott and Larry McQueen\, authors of The Costumes of Hollywood\, will be in virtual conversation with FIT Special Collections Associate James Ferguson\, with Q&A to follow. \nThe Costumes of Hollywood details the design\, creation\, and influence of over 100 ensembles from some of the most iconic designers\, films\, and roles in Hollywood history\, spanning the 1920s through the early 21st century. \nAll costumes featured are from the Collection of Motion Picture Costume Design\, one of the world’s largest private collections\, curated over 35 years by leading Hollywood costume historian and archivist\, Larry McQueen. The book presents full costumes on display in addition to close-ups\, and rarely seen interior details of some garments. Photo courtesy of designer.\nFebruary 25–March 22\, 2026\nGoodman Center Lobby \nBeyond Utility\, curated by graduate students in the Fashion and Textile Studies: History\, Theory\, Museum Practice MA program in collaboration with The Museum at FIT\, examines the perpetual transformation of utilitarian design within and beyond the fashion system. Throughout history\, fashion and anti-fashion groups have adopted and abstracted clothing born out of necessity\, continuously negotiating between form and function. Showcasing never-before-displayed objects from the MFIT Study Collection and the FTS Graduate Study Collection\, the exhibition pairs utility dress archetypes with their later reinterpretations\, featuring designs from Issey Miyake\, BOY London\, Bonnie Cashin\, Junya Watanabe\, Burberry\, Moschino\, and more. \nThe case studies span three sections\, unbound by chronology: “Workwear: Beyond Labor\,” “Military: Beyond Combat\,” and “Craft: Beyond Domesticity\,” exploring the interplay between materials\, aesthetics\, and cultural connotations. DESCRIPTION:There is a hunger for the human—an escape but not a denial of our world within small screens. How can we return to the grounding of the primal through walking\, observing\, mark making\, moving\, and conversing? \nThis event is a montage of excursions with the tactile and with the tangible. Interdisciplinary structures will facilitate a melding of approaches that support our related processes … We share a collective focus\, bringing the physical and improvisational through interludes of collective play. \nMarch 24 \n\n6:30–9:30 pm: In conversation with Slavko Djuric\, Asuka Ohsawa\, and Heidi Neilson\n\nMarch 25 \n\n12:30–4 pm: Installation and prompt-based interactions; dancers and musicians\, 2–3 pm\n\nBoth events take place at FIT’s John E. Reeves Great Hall at 218 West 28th Street (entrance on 28th Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues). \nThese events are free and open to the public; faculty members\, please consider bringing your students to both or either event(s).

DESCRIPTION:Join us in the FIT Library on the Sixth Floor of the Goodman Center at FIT for our first Archives Salon of the semester when fashion illustrator Bil Donovan will be in conversation with FIT professor and illustrator Lamont A. O’Neal. \nIn his 40-plus-year career\, Professor Lamont O’Neal has been published in nearly every aspect of the fashion world\, including the magazines Cosmopolitan\, New York\, GQ\, Playboy\, and Essence. Professor O’Neal’s list of fashion designer clients includes Oscar de la Renta\, David Chu Nautica\, American Eagle\, and Polo Ralph Lauren. He also frequently contributed covers for Vogue Butterick. His credits include portraiture\, children’s books and illustrations. Published works include Illustrated Men: Drawing and Rendering the Male Fashion Figure\, and André: André Leon Talley–A Fabulously Fashionable Fairy Tale. \nBil Donovan is America’s leading contemporary fashion illustrator with an international following. Donovan’s instantly recognizable illustrative style has led to an enviable list of clients that include The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York\, Vogue\, The New York Times\, Harper Collins\, The Washington Post\, Vanity Fair\, Bergdorf Goodman\, St. Regis Hotels\, L’Occitane\, and Saks Fifth Avenue.
