SUMMARY:FIT Archives Salon: Collecting Sub Cultures—Goth and Japanese Lolitas
DESCRIPTION:For this third FIT Archives Salon event\, FIT Professor Summer Lee will be in conversation with Charlene Fossum to discuss the small collection of underground media\, including magazines like Propaganda and Carpe Noctem\, which she collected in her youth and recently donated to the archive. Charlene and Summer will discuss how underground media unified goth and dark subculture in the 1980s and 1990s\, and explore its implications for contemporary scholars. \nSummer Lee is a fashion historian who holds an MA in Fashion and Textile Studies from FIT\, where her qualifying paper was an exhibition project titled Emo: Spectrum of Subcultural Style. She has been teaching at FIT as an adjunct instructor since Fall 2023 and currently teaches Youth Subculture\, Identity\, and Fashion: A Sociological Perspective in the Social Sciences Department. \nBorn and raised in suburban Philadelphia\, Charlene Fossum became interested in goth subculture as a fan of British new wave and synthesizer-based music in the 1980s. Collecting magazines and catalogs was a way to keep abreast of alternative culture\, and to share the styles\, music\, and interests with members of her local alternative community. She later became interested in Japanese culture and comics in the late 1980s\, and began collecting manga\, as well as culture and style magazines in the 1990s. Fossum attended the School of Visual Arts from 1990 to 1994\, earning a BFA in illustration. She married in 1996 and came to reside in Brooklyn where she works on various personal projects of embroidered textile art and pointillism illustration. She donated her magazine collection to FIT’s Special Collections to ensure it would be accessible for subculture studies. \nThis event is free and open to the pubic. \n REGISTER ON EVENTBRITE

SUMMARY:Fashion and Textile Studies Symposium: Negotiating Femininity: Constructing Ideals
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite you to the annual student symposium of FIT’s Master of Arts degree program in Fashion and Textile Studies: History\, Theory\, Museum Practice. \nThis year’s theme is “Negotiating Femininity: Constructing Ideals” and will be held from 1 to 5 pm\, on Saturday\, May 2\, in the Katie Murphy Amphitheatre at FIT\, at Seventh Avenue and West 27th Street. \nThis year’s symposium explores how femininity is shaped\, interpreted\, and lived through the intersections of body\, dress\, fashion\, and materiality. By considering the gap between ideals and lived perspectives\, the speakers ask: Who defines femininity? How are these identities created and maintained? These presentations examine the socio-cultural pressures and power dynamics embedded in ideas of femininity\, alongside the ongoing tensions inherent within constructions of feminine aesthetics. \nThe papers establish femininity as a concept shaped by enduring structures\, yet one open to constant reinterpretation and challenge. Collectively\, they address how the pluralities of feminine ideals are disseminated\, enforced\, and subverted. The program spans contemporary Tumblr feminism; mannequins and the body; Tang dynasty cross-dressing; post-human feather couture; delicate sylphs; and the objectification of eyes. The areas of influence encompass technology and online cultures\, media\, retail environments\, beauty\, the fashion system\, and performance. \nFemininity is approached as historically and culturally contingent\, but simultaneously as an eternal ideal. Across a broad temporal scope\, gender is shown to emerge from the negotiated relationships between experience\, presentation\, and identity. Ultimately\, the symposium offers critical reflections on how the perception and reception of feminine identity has been negotiated across time and space by engaging with diverse standards\, ideals\, and perspectives \nProgram: \n\n1 pm: Welcoming remarks by Fashion and Textile Studies Chair Dr. Hilary Davidson\n1:10 pm: Guest speaker panel\n1:30 pm: Light break\n1:40 pm: “Posthuman Plumage and Feminine Masquerade: Schiaparelli’s The Agony and the Ecstasy (Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2026)\,” by Abigail Adams\n2:10 pm: “The Sylph: Etherealizing The Female Form\,” by Thomasina Sanders\n2:40 pm: “The Sweet Subversion of 2010s Tumblr Feminism\,” by Andy Salzer\n3:10 pm: Refreshment break\n3:30 pm: “Surface Vision: Looking at Eyes\, Race\, and Cosmetic Aesthetics\,” by Vivian Yip\n4 pm: “Women’s Cross-Dressing in Tang (618–907) China: Hybridity\, Gender and Fashion\,” by Xiaoye Du\n4:30 pm: “The Mannequin as a Mirror: the Feminine Body\, Desire\, and Consumer Culture in the Twentieth Century\,” by Chloe Johnson\n5 pm: Closing remarks by Dr. Hilary Davidson\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. \n RSVP FOR THE SYMPOSIUM

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Making Ground: Selected Works from the Class of 2026 — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Jacqueline Lafayette\, The Wild Chant\, 2026\, oil on canvas\nJune 8–September 6\, 2026\nArt and Design Gallery \nThis summer\, the Art and Design Gallery presents Making Ground: Selected Works from the Class of 2026\, a curated selection of highlights from the annual Graduating Student Exhibition (GSE) at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). The exhibition brings together emerging artists and designers across a wide range of disciplines in the School of Art and Design. Selected following the conclusion of the GSE\, the works on view reflect diverse practices spanning fine arts\, illustration\, photography\, textiles\, fashion\, and design. \nMaking Ground speaks to a moment of active transition\, where these artists are establishing their footing\, claiming space\, shaping direction\, and constructing the foundations of their professional practices. The exhibition also signals material and process\, evoking the surfaces\, structures\, and conceptual frameworks that underpin the work itself. Together\, the exhibition foregrounds bold experimentation and distinctive points of view\, highlighting the ambition and originality of artists and designers at the start of their professional journeys\, and spotlighting a generation of practitioners not only entering the field\, but contributing to and redefining it on their own terms. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.
