Harris\, one of the foremost experts in interracial communication\, will be the guest speaker for an online event titled “Difficult Conversations: Talking about Race\, Communication\, and Social Justice.” Dr. Harris’s guest attendance will be a two-part program. First\, Dr. Harris will give a talk exploring race\, media\, and social justice issues and ways these concepts intersect. Purpose of the talk is to help the audience gain a deeper understanding of interracial communication and the need for communication competence. Second\, the talk will have an interview format\, where Dr. Nurhayat Bilge will both raise questions and facilitate student questions to further the discussion.  \nDr. Tina M. Harris is an internationally renowned interracial communication scholar with particular interests in race\, media representations\, and racial social justice. Her pedagogy\, research\, and service at LSU are driven by her desire to empower others with the communication and critical thinking skills necessary for becoming global citizens. DESCRIPTION:The Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion hosts Civility Week\, a week of activities\, talks\, and workshops aimed at achieving the goals of FIT’s civility initiative. \nThe initiative is aimed at engaging our community in a discussion of respectful ways of living and learning in a higher education environment. FIT encourages our community to behave with civility. A community upholding civility respects the rights of individuals and groups. It is characterized by understanding and considerations of the differences among members of the community. The diversity of the college adds to the richness of campus life\, and FIT expects all members of the community to respect both differences and commonalities. \nThis year’s Civility Week theme is social justice. \nSo far in 2020 we have experienced a major global pandemic\, economic crisis\, and social unrest given the recent deaths of George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, and so many others. President Joyce F. Brown and the entire college community are focusing their efforts on educating and promoting social justice. DESCRIPTION:Celebrated poet Jericho Brown will read from his work and answer questions in a virtual visit with the FIT community. Brown is author of The Tradition (Copper Canyon\, 2019) for which he won the Pulitzer Prize. He is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation\, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard\, and the National Endowment for the Arts\, and he is the winner of the Whiting Award. \nBrown’s first book\, Please (New Issues\, 2008)\, won the American Book Award. His second book\, The New Testament (Copper Canyon\, 2014)\, won the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award. His third collection\, The Tradition\, won the Paterson Poetry Prize and was a finalist for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. His poems have appeared in The Bennington Review\, Buzzfeed\, Fence\, jubilat\, The New Republic\, The New York Times\, The New Yorker\, The Paris Review\, TIME\, and several volumes of The Best American Poetry. He is a professor at Emory University and is the director of the creative writing program. \nModerated by Dr. Amy Lemmon\, English and Communication Studies. DESCRIPTION:As part of its Civility Week\, FIT hosts the Diversity Comic Con for a third year\, and this year will be completely online\, which means anyone can attend from anywhere in the world. \nThe comic con features panel discussions\, speed networking\, drawing contest\, cosplay challenge\, a comic anthology an a virtual marketplace/exhibition. \nGuests this year include Shawn Martinbrough\, Alitha Martinez\, Christian Cooper\, Kiku Hughes\, Mika Song\, Amy Chu\, Gina Gagliano\, Andrea Colvin\, John Siuntres\, Andy Schmidt\, Fabrice Saplosky and many more. We are also joined by Scholastic Graphix\, First Second\, Ahoy Comics\, Magnetic Press\, Fairsquare Comics\, Random House Graphic and DC Comics. \nView the full list of speakers on the Diversity Comic Con website. \nWhile the medium of comic books has been around for almost a century\, the presence of minorities—as both subjects and creators—has been sorely lacking. SUMMARY:Globally Connected @ FIT: The Joy of Modern Life: Things to Avoid During the Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Did Parisians maintain 6-feet social distance?   Edouard Manet\, Masked Ball at the Opera\, 1873\, via National Gallery of Art\nIn a beautifully illustrated talk for the Globally Connected @ FIT virtual series\, Dr. Kyunghee Pyun\, associate professor\, History of Art discusses joyous spectacles of modern life such as the night life\, emergence of restaurants and cafes\, strolls in department stores\, and musical performances in theaters at the turn of the 20th century in New York City and in other large cities. Ironically\, we have learned that these are the same types of activities we should avoid and curtail during the current pandemic. In this talk\, we will appreciate a cosmopolitan lifestyle with reflections on public health and technology. \nAssociate Professor Kyunghee Pyun’s scholarship focuses on history of collecting\, reception of Asian art\, diaspora of Asian artists\, and Asian American visual culture. She served as a Leon Levy fellow in the Center for the History of Collecting at the Frick Collection. She is an editor of Fashion\, Identity\, Power in Modern Asia\, a publication that surveys modernized dresses in the early 20th century. DESCRIPTION:For its first digital-only issue\, Hue magazine ran a story written and illustrated by Sam Kalda ‘14 about creative life during lockdown. \nFIT will be talking with Kalda about the joys and struggles of making a living as an artist\, how to find inspiration in stressful times\, and details of his creative process. We should have time for some questions from the audience as well. \nIllustrator Sam Kalda\, based in St. Paul\, won a gold medal in book illustration from the Society of Illustrators in 2017. His work has appeared in The New York Times\, The New Yorker\, Buzzfeed\, The Boston Globe\, Wired\, and many other publications.
