Like the luxurious fashions of Dior’s New Look\, which debuted in 1947\, the interior designs of Victor Grandpierre and Georges Geffroy infused a war-weary world with a sumptuous new aesthetic drawing on the refined traditions of the past. Using vintage photographs\, author Maureen Footer recounts the lives and the work of this trio. SUMMARY:FIT Photo Talks: Victoria Sambunaris
DESCRIPTION:Victoria Sambunaris structures her life around a photographic journey traversing the American landscape for several months per year. Her large-scale project-based photographs document the continuing transformation of the American landscape with specific attention given to expanding political\, technological and industrial interventions. \nSambunaris received her MFA from Yale University in 1999. She is the recipient of the 2021 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship\, the Aaron Siskind Foundation Individual Photographer’s Fellowship and the Anonymous Was a Woman Award. Her work is held in numerous collections including the Museum of Modern Art\, the Whitney Museum of American Art\, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery\, the Lannan Foundation\, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Art. Radius Books Published her first monograph\, Taxonomy of a Landscape. She is represented by Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:FIT Authors Talks: Meira Goldberg on Sonidos Negros
DESCRIPTION:Professor K. Meira Goldberg discusses her book Sonidos Negros: On the Blackness of Flamenco. \nHow is the politics of Blackness figured in the flamenco dancing body? What does flamenco dance tell us about the construction of race in the Atlantic world? Sonidos Negros traces how\, in the span between 1492 and 1933\, the vanquished Moor became Black\, and how this figure\, enacted in terms of a minstrelized Gitano\, paradoxically came to represent Spain itself. \nThe imagined Gypsy about which flamenco imagery turns dances on a knife’s edge delineating Christian and non-Christian\, White and Black worlds. This figure’s subversive teetering undermines Spain’s symbolic linkage of religion with race\, a prime weapon of conquest. Flamenco’s Sonidos Negros live in this precarious balance\, amid the purposeful confusion and ruckus cloaking embodied resistance\, the lament for what has been lost\, and the values and aspirations of those rendered imperceptible by enslavement and colonization. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.

DESCRIPTION:October 29–November 13\nGallery FIT \nMemories\, both real and imagined\, are the catalyst of this group exhibition of photographic-based imagery by FIT students in the Photographic Concepts and Exhibition (PH352) classes. The exhibition Unseen Memory is a creative exploration of personal narrative\, identity\, and truth experienced by Fine Arts students in the Photography Department. Collaborating with students from all three PH352 classes along with professors Jessica Wynne\, Tiffany Smith\, and Michel Leroy\, the exhibition is presented in two consecutive shows in Gallery FIT at The Museum at FIT. \nThis exhibition runs in two parts. SUMMARY:Globally Connected @ FIT: Slender and Beautiful: On Standards in the Fashion Industry
DESCRIPTION:Paolo Volonté\, Author of Fat Fashion: The Thin Ideal and the Segregation of Plus-Size Bodies (2021)\, in conversation with FIT Professor Yuni Kawamura. \nThe discussion will revolve around an analysis of the contentious issue of the tyranny of slenderness in fashion. In closely examining the thin ideal and the segregation of fatness in the fashion system\, and focusing on womenswear\, it will explore fashion as a situated practice from the perspective both of producers and consumers\, industry and society\, technology and the body.  \nBased on the discussion of the countertrends that are increasingly emerging in today’s fashion\, it will be argued that a possible change in the body ideal cultivated by fashion will not depend on random events promoted by the fashion system\, but on social changes of a more general nature. \nPaolo Volonté is associate professor of cultural sociology at Politecnico di Milano\, where he teaches the Sociology of Fashion. He is also co-editor of the International Journal of Fashion Studies. His work addresses fashion professions (design\, styling)\, fashion and art\, and the Italian fashion system. \nDr. Yuniya (Yuni) Kawamura\, professor\, Social Sciences\, earned her PhD in sociology from Columbia University and is trained as a professional designer at Bunka College of Fashion in Japan\, Kingston University in the U.K.\, and FIT. \nHosted by the Office of International Programs\, History of Art\, and the Cultural Fellows. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.

DESCRIPTION:Resurgence\nOctober 10–November 6\nLobby and Gallery \nResurgence showcases the ingenuity of artisan work and hand-crafted objects from textiles\, jewelry\, and decorative accessories. Contributors to this show include FIT alumni\, faculty\, and students\, as well as finalists from the 2022 Global Eco Artisan Awards\, a recognition given by the AGAATI Foundation. The unique pieces highlight FIT’s hands-on curriculum and represent how mastering artisanship can lead to successful entrepreneurship. Many of the Global Eco Artisan finalists are informally trained artisans who learned their expertise through generations of family or regional craft practices. The exhibition celebrates the diversity of craft from around the globe and displays the unique way that artists master technique\, material\, and design. \nThe exhibition is curated by Nomi Kleinman\, chair of Textile/Surface Design\, in collaboration with Sarah Mullins\, chair of Footwear and Accessories Design\, and the AGAATI Foundation\, a nonprofit committed to celebrating creativity and artisan-made craft.  \nThe contributors from the FIT community are drawn from Footwear and Accessories Design\, Jewelry Design\, and Textile/Surface Design departments. H+ and KR3T’s support young dancers as they prepare for a career in the performing arts. Professor Romero has a long career in fashion journalism and is co-curator of an upcoming exhibition at The Museum at FIT on hip hop style. The exhibition Unseen Memory is a creative exploration of personal narrative\, identity\, and truth experienced by Fine Arts students in the Photography Department. Collaborating with students from all three PH352 classes along with professors Jessica Wynne\, Tiffany Smith\, and Michel Leroy\, the exhibition is presented in two consecutive shows in Gallery FIT at The Museum at FIT. \nThis exhibition runs in two parts.
