DESCRIPTION:Now Appearing! FIT recruitment poster circa 1970s/1980s (FITA Promotional Materials: Special Collections and FIT College Archive)\nNovember 1–December 1\, 2025\nArt and Design Gallery\, Back Gallery \nFIT’s Special Collections and College Archives\, part of the Gladys Marcus Library\, is known for its fashion documentation through rare periodicals\, fashion plates\, monographs detailing all aspects of the industry\, and unique manuscript collections. These materials provide entrance into often unpublished behind-the-scenes processes critical to fashion design\, marketing\, forecasting\, and research. \nThe College Archives\, a lesser-known part of the Special Collections\, documents the history of the college\, our evolving programs\, and the student body over eight decades. At this momentous time\, on the cusp of ushering in new leadership when longstanding President Joyce F. Brown retires\, we delved into the College Archives to explore documentary evidence of how students\, their work\, and campus life in general has been recorded since the college’s inception in 1944. \nMoving forward\, the Special Collections of FIT is actively working to expand its holdings to include more contemporary and diverse designers and makers operating in a variety of fields\, as well as aiming to capture a broader geographic scope of work across fashion\, design\, and art. \nTwo newly acquired\, as yet unprocessed\, collections included in this exhibition—the Douglas Says Collection and the Steven Cutting Collection—are examples of this expanded vision. \nNurturing the Artist is curated by FIT’s Special Collections and College Archives\, part of the Gladys Marcus Library. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual presentation by BFA students from the Textile/Surface Design program who will introduce us to their personal and innovative design concepts for hand screen-printed commemorative scarves—each one a wearable reminder of the significance of the U.N. charter 80 years after its signing. \nThey were created in the FIT course TD 361 Screen Printing Scarves: A Global Perspective taught by Professor Susanne Goetz\, which approaches scarves as more than just a decorative accessory but as a powerful medium for self-expression\, cultural identity\, and social commentary. The students researched the diverse meanings and uses of scarves in specific historical\, geographic\, and cultural contexts and studied historic and contemporary references. \nThe scarves will be exhibited at the United Nations\, December 2–30\, 2025\, in the Lobby of the Albano Building\, 305 East 46th St.\, and at FIT in the Feldman Lobby Jan. 21–Feb. 22\, 2026. \nThe exhibitions feature work by the following students: \nMaliha Ayaz\, Nur Balci\, Maguy Berry\, Sofia Bertoletti-Phares\, Alice Chekunova\, Hazel Choi\, Mehreen Farihah Kha\, Arda Hajjar\, Sophia Herrera\, Sumbhav Jain\, Anagha Kamlapurkar\, Sabrina Korompis\, Lesly Lozano\, Kornilia Makrygeorgou\, Kayla Mantell\, Amayah Meas\, Vrushti Mehta\, Nana Osako\, Julia Plante\, Giovanna Ricci\, Alexis Ridge\, Toby Wyman \nProfessor Susanne Goetz is the chair of the Textile/Surface Design Department. She has international experience in printed textile design\, sustainable textiles\, and artisanship\, with a focus on digital and traditional approaches to design and production. Curated by Dr. Valerie Steele\, director of The Museum at FIT\, the exhibition will feature approximately 100 looks by designers such as Alexander McQueen\, Elsa Schiaparelli\, Jean-Paul Gaultier\, Gianni and Donatella Versace\, John Galliano for Christian Dior Haute Couture\, Rick Owens\, Thierry Mugler\, Vivienne Westwood\, and many more. Described by Suzy Menkes as “the Freud of Fashion\,” Steele has spent more than five years working on this exhibition and the accompanying book\, which draws on the evolution of psychoanalytic ideas about sexuality and the unconscious\, with sections devoted to themes such as the mirror stage\, the skin ego\, desire\, and sexual difference. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

Every home is filled with the clack of looms and the scent of natural dyes simmering over open fires. In these spaces\, weaving is far more than craft; it is a way of life. Here\, threads connect past and present\, and each textile tells a story of resilience. For generations\, the artisans of Oaxaca have woven their world into intricate patterns that speak of nature\, ancestors\, and community bonds. Their craft represents an unbroken line of knowledge passed down through centuries\, each knot and dye preserving both their heritage and identity. \nToday\, this work faces new challenges. The same global markets that bring opportunity also demand compromise\, pressuring artisans to adapt their traditional designs and methods to appeal to modern tastes and industrial efficiency. What was once woven for local use now finds itself at the crossroads of preservation and commodification\, as artisans delicately balance their heritage with the demands of survival. Yet\, these weavers resist\, transforming their art into a quiet rebellion that continuously preserves cultural identity while navigating a rapidly changing world. \nThis exhibition explores the diversity of Oaxaca’s weaving traditions\, encompassing techniques and designs from different regions of the state. The natural dyes featured in these textiles\, drawn from plants\, insects\, and minerals\, embody a deep relationship with the land and its ecosystems. However\, these dyes are not inherently sustainable. Their reliance on nature’s cycles\, and the ecosystems that support them\, places them at risk—dependent on human practices that must prioritize balance\, preservation\, and systemic care. The relationship between artisans and the natural world is one of both beauty and fragility\, reminding us that such resources require thoughtful stewardship. \nThrough these curated images\, textiles\, and garments\, you’ll witness how weaving has become a tool for empowerment and collective action. DESCRIPTION:Image by Dan Shefelman/The Animation Project.\nJanuary 17–February 15\, 2026\nArt and Design Gallery \nRewind\, Play\, Fast Forward: Animation and Game Design at FIT and Beyond celebrates animation and game design work by FIT students\, faculty\, and alumni of the School of Art and Design and the School of Graduate Studies. \nThe exhibition surveys works created in New York City and beyond\, showing how storytelling appears in animation\, where a storyline can take on a linear structure\, and in game design\, where players shape the story themselves. On display are a wide variety of game and animation art\, concept and character designs\, and games to play\, along with a special guest exhibition of world-class work from Hornet\, an New York–based animation studio that produces all forms of commercial work\, including stop-motion and computer-generated animation. \nAt FIT\, students in the Illustration BFA program can specialize in design for animation and games\, where they learn about concept art and character design to understand how characters and sets work together to create worlds and tell stories. Students in the Animation\, Interactive Media\, and Game Design BFA program take the process from design to completion\, adding movement\, sound\, and/or gameplay. Alumni of both programs have gone on to work for renowned studios\, including DreamWorks\, NBC Universal\, Disney\, and Titmouse\, where they continue to create character designs\, concept art\, and animation for popular shows. DESCRIPTION:Join a reception on Thursday\, January 29\, from 5 to 7 pm\, for the exhibition Rewind\, Play\, Fast Forward: Animation and Game Design at FIT and Beyond in the Art and Design Gallery in the Pomerantz Center. \n\nJanuary 17–February 15\, 2026\nArt and Design Gallery \nRewind\, Play\, Fast Forward: Animation and Game Design at FIT and Beyond celebrates animation and game design work by FIT students\, faculty\, and alumni of the School of Art and Design and the School of Graduate Studies. \nThe exhibition surveys works created in New York City and beyond\, showing how storytelling appears in animation\, where a storyline can take on a linear structure\, and in game design\, where players shape the story themselves. DESCRIPTION:February 2–16\, Goodman Center Lobby\nFebruary 9–28\, Goodman Center\, Room D223  \nThis 3D virtual fashion exhibition presents 28 looks created by Professor Jennifer Lee\, Ph.D. (Fashion Business Management\, FIT). The exhibition brings together traditional African ensembles from prestigious museum collections alongside contemporary reinterpretations from The Museum at FIT\, curated by Elizabeth Way\, Ph.D.\, and designed by legendary fashion designers from eight African countries: Côte d’Ivoire\, the Democratic Republic of Congo\, Ethiopia\, Ghana\, Kenya\, Mali\, Nigeria\, and South Africa. \nOn screens in the Goodman Center Lobby\, each look is meticulously 3D modeled and interwoven with the stories of cultural trailblazers whose lives and legacies have inspired global audiences. Together\, these works honor the richness\, innovation\, and enduring influence of African fashion\, preserving its cultural heritage for future generations. \nThis project is part of The Legacy: Diversity Meets Technology (founded in 2021)\, a collegewide experiential learning initiative that promotes multicultural diversity through emerging technologies.  \nInteractive 3D views for each garment are available on The Legacy 2026 website. \nWatch the project video on YouTube. \nThe Goodman Lobby exhibition is free and open to the public.
