SUMMARY:FIT Photo Talks 2025: Myles Loftin
DESCRIPTION:Myles Loftin.\nPart of the new vanguard of image makers\, Myles Loftin is an artist\, storyteller\, and creative collaborator based in Brooklyn. Brands like Google\, Calvin Klein\, Netflix\, Everlane\, Converse\, Parade\, Nike\, and Tommy Hilfiger commission him for ad campaigns\, and publications like Vogue\, Out\, Paper\, The Cut\, Garage\, i-D\, Interview\, and The Fader turn to him for editorials. \nIn 2024\, he joined the faculty of the International Center of Photography. Loftin’s work sophisticated and intimate is driven by his desire to show up for underrepresented and misrepresented groups—because as queer Black man\, he knows the power of visibility. Loftin was featured in the campaign “Polaroid Originals and Ryan McGinley Present the New Originals\,” and he co-curated a panel for Parsons School of Design’s “Nth Degree Series\,” celebrating “thinkers\, visionaries\, and creators who define the cutting edge.” \nForges named him one of 2020’s “30 Under 30” in the Art and Style category. His work was also featured in the exhibition The New Black Vanguard: Photography Between Art and Fashion\, curated by Antwaun Sargent. In 2021\, he was nominated for the Dazed 100\, and in 2022 his portrait series “True Beauties\,” featuring ballroom legends the House of LaBeija\, was exhibited at Maison Kitsuné in Brooklyn and Paris and featured by WePresent. \nThis event is part of FIT’s 2025 Black History Month activities. Find out more at fitnyc.edu/blackhistory. \nThis event is for the FIT community only.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: City in Bloom: Rediscovering Nature's Fragments — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Story Stitchers Collective\, Peace in the Prairie\, 2022. (Video still).\nFebruary 13–March 25\, 2025\nArt and Design Gallery \nCity in Bloom is a meditation on the resilience of the human experience and the restorative capacity of nature within urban life. From the shaded elegance of tree-lined streets to the verdant sophistication of plants nurtured within apartments\, these moments of “urban nature” assert themselves to our advantage\, reminding city dwellers that serenity\, a sense of place within the infinite universe\, can be accessed simply by watching for owls in Central Park or pigeons on one’s own windowsill; beholding slivers of light\, cloud\, and sky between shimmery\, towering skyscrapers; listening for seagulls as one walks toward a lake or river\, then smelling the salty breeze floating across it. After all\, even in the most industrialized of spaces\, nature’s carefully calibrated biorhythms persist. \n\nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation. \nThe gallery is open 9 am to 5 pm daily. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Fashioning Wonder: A Cabinet of Curiosities — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Mary Katrantzou\, printed\, embroidered\, and beaded dress with net overlay\, spring 2019\, England\, museum purchase\, 2023.52.1\nFebruary 19–April 20\, 2025\nSpecial Exhibitions Gallery\nThe Museum at FIT \nFashioning Wonder: A Cabinet of Curiosities is an inventive exhibition that provides the first in-depth exploration of the fascinating connections between cabinets of curiosities and fashion. Also known as wunderkammern in German\, cabinets of curiosities can be traced back to the early 16th century. They were precursors to the modern museum\, and many included examples of clothing. The exhibition features nearly 200 garments and accessories\, almost exclusively selected from MFIT’s permanent collection\, which are inspired by the breadth of objects collected within the cabinets. The objects on view\, many of which are shown for the first time\, are meant to pique curiosity through their rarity\, beauty\, or originality. \nAn introductory gallery examines the history of cabinets of curiosities\, explaining their significance to the Age of Exploration (15th to 17th centuries)\, their ties to colonialism\, and the need for contemporary museums to be more inclusive and informed about the objects they acquire. It also highlights the interconnections between curiosity\, creativity\, and collecting. A dress by Mary Katrantzou dates to her 10th anniversary collection in 2019\, in which she expressed the urge “to amass like objects of a particular kind\, to record\, to study and identify\, to protect and cherish.” Its intricate patterning includes butterflies and seashells\, both of which are regularly featured in the cabinets. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public. Find out more on The Museum at FIT’s website.
