SUMMARY:ARTSpeak: A Conversation with Nell Irvin Painter

A graduate of Harvard University\, Painter went on to become the Edwards Professor Emeritus of American History at Princeton University. She is the author of seven books and countless articles relating to the history of the American South. Painter’s book The History of White People guides us through more than 2\,000 years of Western civilization\, illuminating not only the invention of race but the frequent praise of “whiteness.” \nHer other books of history include Sojourner Truth: A Life\, A Symbol\, which won the nonfiction prize of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association; Southern History Across the Color Line; Standing at Armageddon: The United States\, 1877–1919\, which won the Letitia Brown Memorial Publication Prize; and Exodusters: Black Migration to Kansas After Reconstruction. \nPainter retired from Princeton in 2005\, and used her newly acquired free time to earn a BFA degree from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in 2009 and received her MFA in painting at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2011. SUMMARY:Holocaust Remembrance Day
DESCRIPTION:Candle\, by Shawn Carpenter\, licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0.\nThe U.S. observes Days of Remembrance\, the nation’s annual commemoration of the Holocaust\, in April each year. For the past 19 years\, FIT has commemorated the Holocaust with a lecture\, exhibition\, and an all-day reading of the names of victims. This year\, due to COVID-19 and the fact that the college is operating remotely\, the traditional commemoration cannot be held. \nInstead\, FIT’s Holocaust Commemoration Committee is sharing a lecture titled Fashion Metropolis Berlin\, a collaboration between The Museum at FIT and the Museum at Eldridge Street\, to honor the day\, which is being held this year on Thursday\, April 8. \nFashion Metropolis Berlin tells the story of Berlin’s fashion industry in the early 20th century. Hundreds of Jewish clothing manufacturers lost their livelihoods and their lives because of the Holocaust. Journalist Jennifer Altmann\, FIT historian Keren Ben-Horin and author Uwe Westphal discuss the lives of several successful fashion houses before and after World War II. \nIn addition to watching the lecture\, FIT’s Holocaust Commemoration Committee invites you to join in honoring the victims of the Holocaust by reading some names of victims included on these lists of children and adults\, to show that the world has not forgotten. \nThe Holocaust was the systematic\, state-sponsored persecution and murder of 6 million people\, mostly Jews\, by the Nazi regime\, its allies\, and collaborators. But the command to exterminate people also included the Roma and Sinti people\, Jehovah’s’ Witnesses\, homosexuals\, Slavs\, dissidents\, those with mental and physical disabilities\, Soviet soldiers and many more. \nTo learn more about the Holocaust\, you can visit The World Holocaust Remembrance Center\, Yad Vashem. \nThe Holocaust was an unspeakable crime against humanity. Yet over the years\, many survivors have spoken\, telling their stories in books and articles\, in film and theater and dance. FIT has given these filmmakers\, scholars\, journalists\, authors\, fashion designers\, religious leaders\, and artists a platform at its annual commemoration as a potent reminder of those who perished.

With the guidance of its founder Shameekia Johnson\, it has become a destination for progressive and innovative art workers to share their experience of navigating the art world from the outside. AOTG is about creating new spaces of representation\, resistance\, and collaboration that reject the values of the market that govern the dominant institutions. \nAOTG brings students and newly emerging cultural innovators together with early and mid-career professionals who pass along knowledge and inspiration by sharing stories of how they followed their own path in making a career. The series focuses on sharing the voices of people excluded from or dismissed by the market operated by and for the powerful. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:Online Exhibition: Recycled and Reclaimed: Zero Waste Knitwear at FIT — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Zero waste cardigan designed by Melody Marte.\nEvery spring semester at FIT\, students who take the course Advanced Knitwear Design: Creative Development and Execution\, taught by Professor Lisa Donofrio\, are asked to create a sweater and coordinating pants. Rather than working with new materials\, students are challenged to make upcycled ensembles from existing knit garments. The students learn to engage with materials sustainably and responsibly\, and the project also allows them to showcase their creativity. \n\nView the exhibition here. \n\nThis online exhibition of their work was created in conjunction with FIT’s 15th Annual Sustainable Business and Design Conference. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:SUNY Distinguished Academy Inaugural Webinar: Health and Wellness in the Age of COVID: A Call to Action for Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:Lifestyle behaviors have long accounted for more than 70% of chronic diseases in the U.S.\, but the ongoing pandemic has focused an intense spotlight on how these preventable conditions—not age —are the main drivers of serious illness. Individuals with COVID-19 are six times more likely to be hospitalized and 12 times more likely to die when they have underlying conditions that include obesity\, heart disease\, lung disease\, and diabetes. We are at a tipping point in healthcare where the paradigm must shift from emphasizing treatment to an equally intense focus on promoting lifestyle behaviors\, especially healthy nutrition\, and diet. This shift can not only prevent and reverse chronic disease\, but promote resilience to COVID-19 and future challenges. \nThis webinar will showcase how wellness and lifestyle medicine can promote the sustainability of SUNY students\, staff\, faculty\, and community especially when external challenges\, like COVID-19\, have had a disproportionate impact on people of color\, and individuals with chronic\, underlying disease. We will identify the components of lifestyle medicine that contribute to healthy longevity\, namely healthy eating\, physical activity\, restorative sleep\, stress management\, positive social connections\, and avoidance of risky substances. We will recognize the ability of a healthy diet\, composed primarily of whole plant foods\, to prevent\, treat\, and reverse many chronic diseases\, including Alzheimer’s disease. We will examine how SUNY can promote wellness and healthy longevity\, and address health disparities\, through proactive student and faculty efforts in partnership with national and local organizations. \nThis event is for SUNY/FIT employees; REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:Art as Impact: Dialogues on Art Advocacy\, Educational Initiatives\, and Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:Art as Impact is a two-part program organized by Art History and Museum Professions student Angelica Pomar that engages topics like art advocacy\, educational initiatives\, and social justice in dialogue.\n\n\n\nPomar will be in conversation with three established creative art professionals: Theresa Sotto\, associate director of academic programs at the Hammer Museum\, Los Angeles; Veronica Alvarez\, director of the CalArts Community Arts Partnership Program\, Los Angeles\, and Carli Beseau\, executive director of exhibits and programs at the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s Development Corporation in New York. \nThe program is meant to spark conversation around these questions: How can we create a more inclusive college community through exhibitions\, programming\, and resources? How can we bridge college communities and public art projects together when addressing ideas of creating spaces for conversations around social justice? The program facilitates dialogues about social justice and change that can be emulated through exhibiting\, programming\, and education. \nProgram dates: \nTuesday\, April 20\, 6 pm: In conversation with Theresa Sotto and Veronica Alvarez: This conversation will discuss the intersection of education and justice\, along with how one can be an activist through art\, and the importance of being socially engaged on a college campus. \nTuesday\, April 27\, 6 pm: In conversation with Carli Beseau: This conversation will talk about the role of an arts professional and what it means to be an artist advocate. We’ll also discuss Beseau’s experience supporting a community of artists even amidst the pandemic. \nThis event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:Online Exhibition: 6876 km — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Patchwork dress created by Sarah Nsikak (La Réunion) with textiles botanically dyed in Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire with artisans supported by There is No Limit Foundation and Mariama Fashion Production. The dress is inspired by the women of Namibia’s Herero tribe\, who—after surviving colonial wars in the early 20th century—designed\, wore\, and adapted the patchwork dress\, a style worn by their oppressors\, as a symbol of rebellion and empowerment.\n6876 km is the distance from the Garment District in Manhattan to The Association of Women Tie-Dyers in Modiya\, Kindia. 6876 km is also the distance traveled every 6 seconds by women and girls collecting water on foot for basic needs. \nIn the online exhibition 6876 km\, photographs by Jon Brown document the creation of a naturally dyed\, zero-waste collection of textile art\, including the plants and people who made them\, from New York City to Kindia\, Guinea\, and Grand-Bassam\, Côte d’Ivoire.   \nThis exhibition\, conceived by FIT Assistant Professor Theanne Schiros and created as part of FIT’s 15th Annual Sustainable Business and Design Conference\, celebrates the skills and cultural heritage of the people—especially indigenous artisans and women—who make our textiles\, the power of education and community as drivers of inclusive sustainable development\, and of fashion as a vehicle for change. \n\nView the exhibition here. \n\nThis virtual exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Art on the Ground: On Securing HOUSING with KJ Freeman
DESCRIPTION:Art on the Ground welcomes KJ Freeman (she/they)\, artist\, curator\, and founder of HOUSING\, to discuss the legacy she is currently building by creating HOUSING to function as a gallery/mutual aid space. Along with her mission to secure the place of artists of color within the art world by giving them a place to show their work and reach collectors\, and have a strong connection to the community. \nArtists turned art dealer KJ Freeman started HOUSING\, a gallery that remains dedicated to stimulating public discourse through the work of artists and creative practitioners whose works show critical commentary and intent. Part of HOUSING’s motivation is to support artists. Another part of their motivation is to support artistic practices and aesthetic experiences that contour the limits of visibility and advance the conditional inclusion of artists of color\, particularly Black artists. \nFor more information\, check out HOUSING here. \nAbout Art on the Ground \nArt on the Ground (AOTG) is an independent\, mobile\, grassroots conversation series that was developed in the Art History and Museum Professions program at FIT.
