DESCRIPTION:In this virtual event\, meet FIT’s new School of Liberal Arts and Sciences faculty members and learn about the global aspects of their research! \nSubhalakshmi (“Subh”) Gooptu\, English and Communication Studies\, has a PhD in English and literature from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst\, and an MA in English and literature from Jabalpur University in India. She specializes in postcolonial and world literatures with a focus on the Caribbean and South Asia. \nAndrea Vasquez de Arthur\, History of Art\, holds a PhD and Master of Arts in art history and archaeology from Columbia University and a BFA in graphic design from Rhode Island School of Design. Most recently\, she worked at the Cleveland Museum of Art where she curated an exhibition on textile work of modern Indigenous Central American women. \nChloe Martin\, Social Sciences–Psychology\, holds a PhD and a Masters of Science from Howard University in Washington\, D.C. She completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering focusing on psychological factors associated with cancer prevention in medically underserved populations. Her research has been supported by the State Department\, the National Cancer Institute of NIH\, and the National Science Foundation. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Fast Forward: Selected Work by Illustration Faculty Alumni  — Closes
DESCRIPTION:August 15–September 25\nThe Gallery \nArt and Design Gallery \nFast Forward features the work of 13 FIT BFA and AAS alumni who are also current or very recent FIT Illustration Department faculty members. After attending FIT\, these artists have taken quite different professional paths and have returned to FIT to share their experiences with the students. The work shown here is a mix of commercial commissions and portfolio pieces—a rich diversity of concepts\, media\, and applications. Included are fashion\, tattoo\, editorial\, and book illustrations\, as well as personal artworks. The range and variety of the work reflects the depth and breath of the Illustration department curriculum—a curriculum that stresses core skills and inspires students with diverse creative sensibilities. \nWe are honored to show the work of Ed Soyka\, who served as the chair of the Illustration Department from 2000 to 2021. Professor Soyka hired many of these artists and worked to shape the current curriculum. \nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. DESCRIPTION:Resurgence\nOctober 10–November 6 \nResurgence showcases the ingenuity of artisan work and hand-crafted objects from textiles\, jewelry\, and decorative accessories. Contributors to this show include FIT alumni\, faculty\, and students\, as well as finalists from the 2022 Global Eco Artisan Awards\, a recognition given by the AGAATI Foundation. The unique pieces highlight FIT’s hands-on curriculum and represent how mastering artisanship can lead to successful entrepreneurship. Many of the Global Eco Artisan finalists are informally trained artisans who learned their expertise through generations of family or regional craft practices. The exhibition celebrates the diversity of craft from around the globe and displays the unique way that artists master technique\, material\, and design. \nThe exhibition is curated by Nomi Kleinman\, chair of Textile/Surface Design\, in collaboration with Sarah Mullins\, chair of Footwear and Accessories Design\, and the AGAATI Foundation\, a nonprofit committed to celebrating creativity and artisan-made craft.  \nThe contributors from the FIT community are drawn from Footwear and Accessories Design\, Jewelry Design\, and Textile/Surface Design departments. DESCRIPTION:Haruko Hayakawa            Mischelle Moy            Rich Tu     \nThe objective of this event is to build a yearly platform that celebrates the diversity of culture that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders bring to their creative communities. \nThe in-person panel discussion will bring three local celebrated creatives of AAPI heritage to campus to discuss their cultures\, experiences\, identity\, and sources of pride\, emphasizing the importance of representation\, mentorship\, and giving back to the community. \nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nHaruko Hayakawa\, (she/her)\, first-generation Japanese American CG artist and Brooklyn-based creative director based out of Brooklyn\nHer work is mainly driven by two themes: nostalgia and her modern-day struggles\, whether that’s around her Japanese American identity\, womanhood\, or finding the beauty in the mundanity of her everyday life. \n\n\nMischelle Moy\, (she/her)\, photographer based in Brooklyn\nShe’s a color-bending\, vision-hungry cat lady who enjoys creative challenges and problem-solving. \n\n\nRich Tu\, (he/him)\, first-generation Filipino American artist and designer residing in Brooklyn\nHis bold visual style is inspired by his three passion points: community\, social justice\, and highlighting the first-gen immigrant experience through self-expression. \n\n\nModerator: \n\n\nTim Joo\, (he/him)\, FIT adjunct faculty member\, Entrepreneurship\nJoo is the co-founder of Haerfest\, a modern accessories company based in New York City. Using vintage photographs\, author Maureen Footer recounts the lives and the work of this trio. Her large-scale project-based photographs document the continuing transformation of the American landscape with specific attention given to expanding political\, technological and industrial interventions. \nSambunaris received her MFA from Yale University in 1999. She is the recipient of the 2021 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship\, the Aaron Siskind Foundation Individual Photographer’s Fellowship and the Anonymous Was a Woman Award. Her work is held in numerous collections including the Museum of Modern Art\, the Whitney Museum of American Art\, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery\, the Lannan Foundation\, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Art. DESCRIPTION:Professor K. Meira Goldberg discusses her book Sonidos Negros: On the Blackness of Flamenco. \nHow is the politics of Blackness figured in the flamenco dancing body? What does flamenco dance tell us about the construction of race in the Atlantic world? Sonidos Negros traces how\, in the span between 1492 and 1933\, the vanquished Moor became Black\, and how this figure\, enacted in terms of a minstrelized Gitano\, paradoxically came to represent Spain itself. \nThe imagined Gypsy about which flamenco imagery turns dances on a knife’s edge delineating Christian and non-Christian\, White and Black worlds. This figure’s subversive teetering undermines Spain’s symbolic linkage of religion with race\, a prime weapon of conquest. Flamenco’s Sonidos Negros live in this precarious balance\, amid the purposeful confusion and ruckus cloaking embodied resistance\, the lament for what has been lost\, and the values and aspirations of those rendered imperceptible by enslavement and colonization. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:Globally Connected @ FIT: Slender and Beautiful: On Standards in the Fashion Industry
DESCRIPTION:Paolo Volonté\, Author of Fat Fashion: The Thin Ideal and the Segregation of Plus-Size Bodies (2021)\, in conversation with FIT Professor Yuni Kawamura. \nThe discussion will revolve around an analysis of the contentious issue of the tyranny of slenderness in fashion. In closely examining the thin ideal and the segregation of fatness in the fashion system\, and focusing on womenswear\, it will explore fashion as a situated practice from the perspective both of producers and consumers\, industry and society\, technology and the body.  \nBased on the discussion of the countertrends that are increasingly emerging in today’s fashion\, it will be argued that a possible change in the body ideal cultivated by fashion will not depend on random events promoted by the fashion system\, but on social changes of a more general nature. \nPaolo Volonté is associate professor of cultural sociology at Politecnico di Milano\, where he teaches the Sociology of Fashion. He is also co-editor of the International Journal of Fashion Studies. Contributors to this show include FIT alumni\, faculty\, and students\, as well as finalists from the 2022 Global Eco Artisan Awards\, a recognition given by the AGAATI Foundation. The unique pieces highlight FIT’s hands-on curriculum and represent how mastering artisanship can lead to successful entrepreneurship. Many of the Global Eco Artisan finalists are informally trained artisans who learned their expertise through generations of family or regional craft practices. The exhibition celebrates the diversity of craft from around the globe and displays the unique way that artists master technique\, material\, and design. \nThe exhibition is curated by Nomi Kleinman\, chair of Textile/Surface Design\, in collaboration with Sarah Mullins\, chair of Footwear and Accessories Design\, and the AGAATI Foundation\, a nonprofit committed to celebrating creativity and artisan-made craft.  \nThe contributors from the FIT community are drawn from Footwear and Accessories Design\, Jewelry Design\, and Textile/Surface Design departments.
