DESCRIPTION:November 7–December 1\, 2024\nArt and Design Gallery \nLighted Earth is a collaboration between Graphic Design students at FIT and jewelry design students at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe\, New Mexico. \nThe exhibition features student projects from IAIA’s jewelry class and will be shown alongside a documentary film being made by the film department at AIA that includes student interviews and insights on the collections from IAIA jewelry design faculty. FIT Graphic Design students developed the identity and interpretive materials for the exhibition. \nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation. \nThe gallery is open 9 am to 5 pm daily. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Africa's Fashion Diaspora — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Sindiso Khumalo\, printed cotton dress detail\, Spring 2021\, South Africa. The Museum at FIT\, museum purchase\, 2023.32.1\nSeptember 18–December 29\, 2024\nSpecial Exhibitions Gallery\, The Museum at FIT\n \nAfrica’s Fashion Diaspora examines fashion as a medium of storytelling and as a vital way for designers to contribute to longstanding and evolving ideas of transnational Black cultural spaces. Whether described as Négritude\, Pan-Africanism\, the Black Atlantic\, Black consciousness\, or Afrofuturism\, Black thinkers and creatives\, from philosophers to writers\, musicians\, and visual artists\, have theorized cultural connections between diverse communities of African descent. This exhibition explores designers from Africa\, the Americas\, and Europe who interpret and construct the culture of their distinct localities and communities for an international audience and/or reach across geographies to tie Black cultural practices together through their designs. \nExamples include South African designer Sindiso Khumalo’s textile print inspired by American abolitionist Harriet Tubman\, British designer Grace Wales Bonner’s tuxedo informed by the court of Emperor Haile Selassie in Ethiopia\, and French designer Olivier Rousteing’s collection for Balmain based on Black American cowboys. Through approximately 60 ensembles\, textiles\, and accessories\, Africa’s Fashion Diaspora illustrates how fashion designers have contributed to international dialogues to chronicle\, evaluate\, and expand modern ideas of Blackness. \nAfrica’s Fashion Diaspora is curated by MFIT associate curator Elizabeth Way. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:CitySource was started in 2011 to connect designers and small businesses with local fashion manufacturers in New York City. With the generous support of the Garment District Alliance\, FIT’s Center for Continuing and Professional Studies has produced an in-person trade show highlighting these factories and businesses within the Garment District. \nEach year\, the event brings a wide variety of vendors including pattern and sample makers\, production contractors\, marking and grading\, cutting\, printers\, pleating\, embroidery\, dyeing\, accessories\, trims\, fabrics\, leather\, knitters\, and design services. DESCRIPTION:January 21–April 20\, 2025 \nGladys Marcus Library\, Fourth Floor Exhibition Case \nStudents in FIT’s Art History and Museum Professions program reflected on the social responsibilities of museums in recognition of Black History Month. The Art History and Museum Professions major prepares students for positions in museums and other art institutions\, with a focus on collections management\, development\, education\, public relations\, rights and reproductions\, visitor services\, special events\, and exhibitions. By showcasing books related to five temporary exhibitions hosted by five different New York City museums\, this exhibition\, held at the Gladys Marcus Library’s fourth-floor exhibit case\, hopes to highlight the work being done to uplift marginalized communities. \nShows like the Whitney’s Edges of Ailey and The Met’s Flight into Egypt: Black Artists and Ancient Egypt 1876–Now provide a look into the world of Black artists and how they have shaped so much of American art and music\, yet their names often remain unspoken. History is littered with forgotten voices\, but large cultural centers can forever change the way something is remembered. Museums hold power\, and with that power comes an obligation to the communities that support them. The types of artwork and artists that museums choose for exhibitions reveal what is valued in society. Every home is filled with the clack of looms and the scent of natural dyes simmering over open fires. In these spaces\, weaving is far more than craft; it is a way of life. Here\, threads connect past and present\, and each textile tells a story of resilience. For generations\, the artisans of Oaxaca have woven their world into intricate patterns that speak of nature\, ancestors\, and community bonds. Their craft represents an unbroken line of knowledge passed down through centuries\, each knot and dye preserving both their heritage and identity. \nToday\, this work faces new challenges. The same global markets that bring opportunity also demand compromise\, pressuring artisans to adapt their traditional designs and methods to appeal to modern tastes and industrial efficiency. What was once woven for local use now finds itself at the crossroads of preservation and commodification\, as artisans delicately balance their heritage with the demands of survival. Yet\, these weavers resist\, transforming their art into a quiet rebellion that continuously preserves cultural identity while navigating a rapidly changing world. \nThis exhibition explores the diversity of Oaxaca’s weaving traditions\, encompassing techniques and designs from different regions of the state. DESCRIPTION:Myles Loftin.\nPart of the new vanguard of image makers\, Myles Loftin is an artist\, storyteller\, and creative collaborator based in Brooklyn. Brands like Google\, Calvin Klein\, Netflix\, Everlane\, Converse\, Parade\, Nike\, and Tommy Hilfiger commission him for ad campaigns\, and publications like Vogue\, Out\, Paper\, The Cut\, Garage\, i-D\, Interview\, and The Fader turn to him for editorials. \nIn 2024\, he joined the faculty of the International Center of Photography. Loftin’s work sophisticated and intimate is driven by his desire to show up for underrepresented and misrepresented groups—because as queer Black man\, he knows the power of visibility. Loftin was featured in the campaign “Polaroid Originals and Ryan McGinley Present the New Originals\,” and he co-curated a panel for Parsons School of Design’s “Nth Degree Series\,” celebrating “thinkers\, visionaries\, and creators who define the cutting edge.” \nForges named him one of 2020’s “30 Under 30” in the Art and Style category. His work was also featured in the exhibition The New Black Vanguard: Photography Between Art and Fashion\, curated by Antwaun Sargent. In 2021\, he was nominated for the Dazed 100\, and in 2022 his portrait series “True Beauties\,” featuring ballroom legends the House of LaBeija\, was exhibited at Maison Kitsuné in Brooklyn and Paris and featured by WePresent. \nThis event is part of FIT’s 2025 Black History Month activities. Since 2012\, JFF has been committed to creating a platform for redemptive stories of marginalized people and ecosystems bravely overcoming challenges and bringing optimism\, empathy\, and light to a world in need of inspiration. \nThe Social Justice Center at FIT is proud to partner with JFF for the portion of the festival taking place at the college. \nFebruary 10: Session 1\, 5–10 pm \nFilm and Media Screening Room D207 \n\n5 pm: I Am Ready\, Warden (Academy Award nominee)\, followed by Q&A with director Smriti Mundhra\, producer Sheila Nevins\, and film subject Aaron Castro\n6:30 pm: Rule Breakers\, followed by Q&A with Roya and Elaha Mahboob\n7:30 pm: Plainspoken\, followed by Q&A with filmmakers\n\nThe film festival is open to the public; it is a ticketed event.  \nAll events during the festival are free to all FIT students\, faculty\, and alumni.
