DESCRIPTION:How do archaeologists study the production and consumption of clothes in prehistoric times? In what ways was dress important in prehistoric communities? Why should contemporary fashion designers learn about textile archaeology and dressing in antiquity? After briefly presenting the fundamentals of practicing textile archaeology without archaeological textiles—the most common case for archaeological projects in prehistory—and reviewing the technology and the practices used\, Mina Nikolovieni will introduce ways of examining the notion of dress for early Greek communities. \nGerasimoula Ioanna (Mina) Nikolovieni (PhD candidate\, Brown University\, Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World) is examining cloth production and dress in early Greece. Working on the archaeology of textile production and dress from prehistoric and historic sites\, Nikolovieni has worked in the Greek Archaeological Service and on other archaeological projects. \nGlobally Connected @ FIT is hosted by the Office of International Programs\, History of Art\, and the Cultural Fellows. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:FIT Authors Talks: Alexander Nagel on 'Color and Meaning in the Art of Achaemenid Persia'
DESCRIPTION:In his book Color and Meaning in the Art of Achaemenid Persia\, Alexander Nagel investigates the use of polychromy in the art and architecture of ancient Iran. Focusing on Persepolis\, he explores the topic within the context of the modern historiography of Achaemenid art and the scientific investigation of a range of works and monuments in Iran and in museums around the world. Nagel’s study contextualizes scholarly efforts to retrieve aspects of ancient polychromies in Western Asia and interrogates current debates about the contemporary use of color in the architecture and sculpture in the ancient Mediterranean world\, especially in North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean. \nBringing a multi-disciplinary perspective to the topic\, Nagel also highlights the important role of theory\, methodology\, and conservation studies in the process of reconstructing polychromy in ancient monuments. A celebration of the work of painters\, artisans\, craftsmen and -women of Iran’s past\, his volume suggests frameworks through which historical and contemporary research play a dynamic role in the reconstruction of ancient technological knowledge. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; join by Webex via the FIT Authors website.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Untying the Bow — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada\, dress\, white silk taffeta with hand-painted yellow dots\, spring/summer 2014\, Spain\, gift of Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada\, 2014.44.1\nMarch 1–24\, 2024\nGallery FIT\, The Museum at FIT  \nUnassuming as they may seem\, bows have played an indispensable role in securing garments and accessories for centuries. Experience their allure in Untying the Bow\, an exhibition curated by graduate students in FIT’s Fashion and Textiles Studies MA program. Discover the ubiquitous influence of bows in our lives\, transcending shoelaces to become a subtle yet powerful element of personal style. \nUntying the Bow is an exploration into the utility and symbolism of this pervasive element of clothing. This exhibition invites visitors to explore the rich history\, symbolism\, and enduring charm of bows in fashion. It unfolds in three thematic sections\, beginning by tracing the bow’s origins and delving into its form and function for utilitarian purposes. The next theme is the bow’s symbolism as a marker and subverter of status and gender. Finally\, the exhibition examines how the symbolism of bows in fashion has evolved into abstract forms and patterns. Experiments with scale and technique allow bows to transcend their original form and become captivating motifs. Untying the Bow is a transformative journey\, unraveling the hidden narratives and cultural expressions that have elevated the bow from a mere structural element to a timeless icon in fashion. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.
