SUMMARY:Globally Connected @ FIT: Sashiko and Cultural Sustainability for the Japanese People
DESCRIPTION:Atsushi Futatsuya.\nEngage with sashiko\, a traditional Japanese embroidery type\, in this conversation with Atsushi Futatsuya\, sashiko artisan and founder of Upcycle Stitches. \nSashiko (Japanese for “little stabs”) is an old Japanese mending technique that originated from a very poor community in Japan. Fast forward to today\, the technique has been adopted by big brands\, such as Kenzo and Maison Margiela. According to Atsushi Futatsuya\, sashiko introduced in English is not wrong\, but unfortunately\, it isn’t usually introduced or described in its entirety. \nThis virtual discussion will explain what sashiko means and represents to the Japanese people\, as it is often communicated with missing elements and can be romanticized in Western culture. Moderated by Cultural Fellow Hinako Ishii\, Fashion Business Management\, who is an international student from Japan. \nAtsushi Futatsuya was born into the third generation of a surviving sashiko family in Gifu prefecture. He grew up with sashiko\, surrounded by thread\, needles\, and fabric. He launched the “Sashi.Co” project with his mother\, Keiko\, who has over 30 years of experience in sashiko stitching as a platform to introduce masterful works of sashiko. \nIn 2017\, Atsushi began introducing the beauty and philosophy of sashiko to the world through his website and workshops as “Sashiko Story.” His website is upcyclestitches.com. \nHosted by the Office of International Programs\, History of Art\, and the Cultural Fellows. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.

The show opens at a crucial moment when Hawes is especially relevant\, because her activism and innovative philosophies correspond to the concerns of today. Hawes criticized the exploitative\, classist nature of the fashion industry and sought to revolutionize it in her own creations\, and through her writing and unionization efforts. She created gender nonbinary clothing and encouraged women to embrace their unique bodies with an open-minded positivity that was ahead of its time. Hawes further used writing and journalism to challenge the fashion industry from the inside\, and called for people to think consciously about what they wear—with words that remain influential. \nRead the full description on The Museum at FIT’s website. \nThis exhibition is presented by students in FIT’s Fashion and Textile Studies: History\, Theory\, Museum Practice MA program.  This program builds knowledge in fashion and textile history\, object conservation\, and exhibition theory over the course of two years. During their second year\, students utilize the interdisciplinary skills they have acquired through the program to collaborate with The Museum at FIT\, developing and installing an exhibition of fashion objects from MFIT’s collection. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

Introducing key themes that are characteristic of McCardell’s designs\, it features nine original dresses from The Museum at FIT’s Study Collection\, mid-20th-century advertisement materials from Special Collections and College Archives\, and her now classic book\, What Shall I Wear? DESCRIPTION:April 12–19\, 2023\nArt and Design Gallery \nFor the spring 2023 Fashion Design AAS program’s capstone projects\, students were asked to create their garments using muslin fabric exclusively. As a result\, the exhibition focuses on simple forms and techniques\, encouraging innovation and skill. For example\, students could choose from a variety of weights\, and the muslin could be draped\, pleated\, embroidered\, dyed\, or hand-painted. Liz Breuer.     \nIn an engaging conversation\, FIT alumna Liz Breuer and Kerry Bannigan will discuss how their diverse backgrounds have shaped them into stewards of the conscious fashion movement. They’ll unpack the many complexities gatekeeping the pathway to a fair and just fashion industry. Preeti Arya\, assistant professor in Textile Development and Marketing\, will serve as moderator. \nLiz Breuer is the founder and CEO of New Normal Bureau\, an impact-driven marketing agency\, focused on strengthening the value proposition of innovative and ethical brands through strategic and creative communication. Liz is a Luxembourg-native whose journey led to NYC to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology where she graduated with a BS degree in International Trade and Marketing with a focus on sustainability. Prior to launching New Normal Bureau in 2020\, Liz boasts a diverse career background\, working across wholesale\, production\, business development and marketing\, leaving her mark with brands such as Tod’s\, The Row\, The Coveteur and Olivia Palermo. Guided by the principles of regeneration\, circularity and transparency\, Liz is building brands\, campaigns and businesses redefining the New Normal- quite literally. \nKerry Bannigan is a social entrepreneur pioneering global fashion and media initiatives to advance the creative economy as a driving force for sustainable development. DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR APRIL 25 AT 4 PM. \n          Christopher Long.                 \nRetail design\, fashion merchandising\, set design\, furniture\, packaging\, interiors\, architecture\, fine art rendering… little-known architect and designer Jock Peters\, a largely forgotten figure of early Los Angeles modernism\, did it all. Professor Christopher Long presents his new book titled Jock Peters\, Architecture and Design: The Varieties of Modernism by Bauer and Dean Publishers. The book is a visually rich portrait of an architect whose most internationally lauded creations include the lavish commercial interiors for the iconic Bullock’s Wilshire store in Los Angeles and the tragically forgotten Hollander department store in New York City. \nAmong Peters’s early work in Germany are the Levantehaus and Karstadt department stores\, a magnificent glass pavilion from 1916\, and his work for Peter Behrens after the war. But\, the architect’s most accomplished and compelling work came after 1922 when he settled in Southern California. \nLong’s study on early modernism includes material from the architect’s personal archive\, still in family hands. The remarkable images in the book—more than 250 historic photographs\, etchings\, watercolors\, and drawings—alongside Long’s narrative\, demonstrate how Peters\, despite his early death\, managed to leave his mark on the modernist landscape in Southern California at a time when the new style was just emerging. \nChristopher Long is Martin S. Kermacy Centennial Professor of Architectural History at the University of Texas at Austin. SUMMARY:Film Screening: 'Till' and Q&A with Writer/Executive Producer Keith Beauchamp
DESCRIPTION:  \nBased on the true story of Mamie Till-Mobley\, Till depicts her pursuit of justice after the murder of her 14-year-old son Emmett in 1955. The film uses 27 years’ worth of research by Keith Beauchamp\, whose efforts led to the reopening of Till’s case by the United States Department of Justice in 2004. Directed by Chinonye Chukwu\, the film stars Danielle Deadwyler as Mamie Till-Bradley\, with Jalyn Hall\, Frankie Faison\, Haley Bennett\, and Whoopi Goldberg in supporting roles. \nThe tale of Emmett Till and his legacy is a true story of black resistance that kickstarted the battle for civil rights in America. DESCRIPTION:The Social Justice Center at FIT hosts a panel discussion about hip hop style over its 50 years\, with experts Dapper Dan\, April Walker\, Antonio Gray\, and Elena Romero\, moderated by Harriette Cole. \nModerator\nHarriette Cole is a veteran in the field of communications. Over the years she has produced educational seminars\, panel discussions\, in-person and electronically presented special events. Currently\, she hosts livestreaming content for AARP\, including the Real Conversations With series\, through her role as multimedia associate producer. She also hosts a weekly radio show called Dreamleapers with Harriette Cole where she interviews dynamic people who have manifested their dreams and come to share their journey. \nPanelists\nDaniel Day\, known as Dapper Dan\, is an iconic fashion designer who made a name for himself during the ’80s in NYC reimagining luxury pieces by creating customized streetwear for locals\, hip-hop artists\, and celebrities emblazoned with logos from major fashion houses. Dan made it all from car interiors to furs and custom leather jogger suits. Dan has worked with a multitude of musicians and celebrities including Bobby Brown\, Salt-N-Pepa\, Eric B. and Rakim\, Bigg Daddy Kane\, LL Cool J\, Lil Kim\, to name a few. Dapper Dan is the author of Dapper Dan: Made in Harlem-A Memoir (Random House) and the recipient of the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021 at CFDA Fashion Awards. \nApril Walker is a fashion game-changer and culture shifter that inspired a lane creating a multi-billion industry coined as streetwear today. As the creator of Walker Wear\, she was one of the first to dominate menswear urban fashion\, implementing product placement and securing celebrity endorsements from Tupac\, Notorious BIG\, and even Beavis and Butt-Head. Walker Wear was also one of the first to kick in the doors for department and chain stores and command millions in sales for this category. Offering fashion and function\, these designs helped catapult Walker as a phenomenon in the industry. Her brand has been featured in Forbes\, Billboard\, Essence\, The New York Times\, TMZ\, Hypebae\, Huffington Post\, Wax Poetics\, etc. She’s featured in the documentaries Fresh Dressed and Netflix’s The Remix HipHop X Fashion\, with International Exhibits at the Kunsthal Museum\, Centraal Museum\, Soho House in Berlin\, Dubai\, and more. Also\, in 2020\, Walker curated the Women In Streetwear exhibition at New York’s Port Authority Bus Terminal\, and serves as a contributor for the Streetwear Essentials online course offered by Parsons x Complex\, and consults for the Department of Education with a customized curriculum. \nAntonio Gray is the vice president and divisional merchandise manager of apparel for Downtown Locker Room (DTLR)\, a retail chain with over 250 stores in 19 states. Prior to joining DTLR in 2006\, the Baltimore native held several positions at a pair of popular regional apparel retailers in the 1990s and 2000s: Merry-Go-Round and Changes. \nElena Romero is a journalist and assistant chair of Marketing Communications at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She is the co-curator of Fresh\, Fly\, and Fabulous: 50 Years of Hip Hop Style currently on display at The Museum at FIT. Romero is the co-editor of Fresh\, Fly\, and Fabulous: 50 Years of Hip Hop Style (Rizzoli) and author of Free Stylin’: How Hip Hop Changed the Fashion Industry (Praeger). SUMMARY:The Future of Fashion: Judging Day Exhibition 2023
DESCRIPTION:From over 200 looks submitted by graduating students in the 2023 class of the Fashion Design BFA program\, judges select which looks will appear in The Future of Fashion runway show held May 10. The day after the judges have made their selections\, an exhibition of all submitted garments will be on view to the public from 9 am to noon in the John E. Reeves Great Hall. Garments selected for the runway presentation will be noted; those selected for Critic Awards and the Macy’s Capsule Collection Award be displayed in the Art and Design Gallery’s second floor studio in the Pomerantz Center. \nFor information about The Future of Fashion show\, visit fitnyc.edu/future.  \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Globally Connected @ FIT: Mediatization and Datafication in the Field of Fashion
DESCRIPTION:Agnès Rocamora.\nIn this conversation\, Dr. Agnès Rocamora will bring mediatization theory in dialogue with critical data studies to look at the idea of the datafication of the field of fashion. Datafication is the process whereby everyday practices and experiences are turned into quantified digital data. Rocamora will unpack this phenomenon\, focusing in particular on the field of fashion influencers. She will reflect on the role of data as capital and of algorithms as key players and gatekeepers in fashion. \nDr. Agnès Rocamora is professor of social and cultural studies at the London College of Fashion\, University of the Arts London. She is the author of Fashioning the City: Paris\, Fashion and the Media (2009)\, and her writing on the field of fashion and on the fashion media has appeared in journals such as Fashion Theory\, Journalism Practice\, Sociology\, Sociétés\, and the Journal of Consumer Culture. She is a co-editor of Thinking Through Fashion: A Guide to Key Theorists (2015)\, of The Handbook of Fashion Studies (2013)\, and of Fashion Media: Past and Present (2019)\, and has contributed to various books including Fashion’s World Cities (2006)\, Fashion as Photograph: Viewing and Reviewing Images of Fashion (2008)\, Critical Luxury Studies (2016)\, and The End of Fashion.
