SUMMARY:FIT Authors Talk: Raissa Bretaña on 'Moxie: The Daring Women of Classic Hollywood'
DESCRIPTION:Raissa Bretaña\, education and collections assistant at The Museum at FIT\, will discuss her book\, Moxie: The Daring Women of Classic Hollywood. \nTo make it in Hollywood\, it takes more than beauty\, brains\, and talent—it takes moxie. This was especially true for women in the heyday of the studio system\, a period from the 1920s to the 1950s when a small number of companies dominated the production and distribution of films in America. It was an industry controlled by male studio executives\, in which directors and producers called the shots and contract players had little say in which roles they would play. Still\, a trailblazing group of actresses forged successful careers out of sheer conviction\, perseverance\, and professional know-how. These spirited women captivated audiences\, shaped the film industry\, and remain enduring icons of classic cinema. \nThis virtual event is for the FIT community only. \n JOIN VIA THE FIT AUTHORS WEBSITE

SUMMARY:Emerging Technology Faculty Workshop: Interactive Mirror
DESCRIPTION:Turn a blank wall into a responsive\, playful mirror that notices you and answers back with light. We’ll start from a ready-to-go project\, swap in effects\, and map the image neatly to your surface with tape-and-test simplicity. Wave a hand\, step forward\, tilt your phone slider—watch it react in real time. We’ll share small showcraft secrets: where to put the projector\, how to tame ambient light\, and how to keep everything running for an evening. \nNo code\, no stress—just a handful of knobs and a space to experiment. By the end you’ll have a compact\, gallery-friendly piece that invites people to move. Bring curiosity; we’ll provide the magic. \nThis event is for FIT faculty only.  \n RSVP FOR THE OCT. 23 SESSION\n  \nNote: This workshop is also offered on Oct. 6\, at 3 pm.

SUMMARY:Fashion Culture: The Art of Parisian Chic
DESCRIPTION:Cover of The Art of Parisian Chic: Modern Women and Modern Artists in Impressionist Paris. Courtesy of Bloomsbury.\nThe new book by FIT Associate Professor Justine De Young\, The Art of Parisian Chic: Modern Women and Modern Artists in Impressionist Paris\, shows how modern women used fashion and stereotypes such as the Parisienne (chic Parisian woman) or the demoiselle de magasin (shopgirl) to construct and reinvent their identities. De Young will be in conversation with Hilary Davidson\, chair of FIT’s MA program for Fashion and Textile Studies: History\, Theory\, Museum Practice\, about how women were seen\, how they aspired to be seen\, and how they navigated public life in Second Empire and Belle Époque Paris. A book signing follows the event. \nFashion Culture programs are organized by The Museum at FIT to provide new perspectives on the culture of fashion. All programs are free unless otherwise indicated. However\, reservations are strongly encouraged\, as space is limited. See a full calendar of fall 2025 Fashion Culture Program events on the museum website. \nThis event is free and open to the public.  \n REGISTER

SUMMARY:Emerging Technology Faculty Workshop: Sculpting in Virtual Reality
DESCRIPTION:Put on a headset and treat the air like a sketchbook—draw shapes\, pull surfaces\, and feel your idea take volume around you. We’ll turn that playful sketch into a tidy\, printable form using a few friendly settings and a short checklist. You’ll learn just enough about “walls\,” supports\, and orientation to make the printer happy without learning a new profession. If you like\, we’ll add a quick finish plan—sand\, prime\, or paint—to bring your piece to life. \nThis is a space to experiment\, undo\, and try again until your sculpture feels right. We keep the tech invisible and the process inviting. You’ll leave with a VR-born design that’s either on the print queue or ready to drop in. \nThis event is for FIT faculty only.  \n RSVP FOR THE OCT. 24 SESSION\n  \nNote: This workshop is also offered on Oct. 8\, at noon.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Adapt/Evolve — Closes
DESCRIPTION:September 18–October 25\, 2025\nArt and Design Gallery\, Pomerantz Center \nAdapt/Evolve is a thought-provoking exhibition that examines adaptive and inclusive design across disciplines within FIT’s School of Art and Design\, including Fashion Design\, Accessories Design\, Interior Design\, Graphic Design\, Jewelry Design\, and Toy Design. \nThe exhibition highlights how interdependence is central to how we live\, interact\, and create inclusive design. Adapt/Evolve reexamines the idea of autonomy and questions traditional divides between dependence and independence. Through multidisciplinary objects\, the show also emphasizes how accessible and adaptive design has become a vehicle for breaking down barriers\, allowing us to engage with one another more equally. \nAdapt/Evolve will be accompanied by a symposium\, which will be held October 16\, noon–5 pm. The symposium will feature panel discussions and presentations investigating adaptive design. \nFor details on both the exhibition and the symposium\, visit fitnyc.edu/gallery. \n\nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation. \nThe gallery is open 9 am to 5 pm daily. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Nurturing the Artist: Student Life From the FIT Special Collections — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Now Appearing! FIT recruitment poster circa 1970s/1980s (FITA Promotional Materials: Special Collections and FIT College Archive)\nNovember 1–December 1\, 2025\nArt and Design Gallery\, Back Gallery \nFIT’s Special Collections and College Archives\, part of the Gladys Marcus Library\, is known for its fashion documentation through rare periodicals\, fashion plates\, monographs detailing all aspects of the industry\, and unique manuscript collections. These materials provide entrance into often unpublished behind-the-scenes processes critical to fashion design\, marketing\, forecasting\, and research. \nThe College Archives\, a lesser-known part of the Special Collections\, documents the history of the college\, our evolving programs\, and the student body over eight decades. At this momentous time\, on the cusp of ushering in new leadership when longstanding President Joyce F. Brown retires\, we delved into the College Archives to explore documentary evidence of how students\, their work\, and campus life in general has been recorded since the college’s inception in 1944. \nMoving forward\, the Special Collections of FIT is actively working to expand its holdings to include more contemporary and diverse designers and makers operating in a variety of fields\, as well as aiming to capture a broader geographic scope of work across fashion\, design\, and art. \nTwo newly acquired\, as yet unprocessed\, collections included in this exhibition—the Douglas Says Collection and the Steven Cutting Collection—are examples of this expanded vision. \nNurturing the Artist is curated by FIT’s Special Collections and College Archives\, part of the Gladys Marcus Library. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Fashion Culture: Fashion Under Fascism
DESCRIPTION:Cover of Fashion Under Fascism: Beyond the Black Shirt. Courtesy of Bloomsbury.\nCUNY professor Eugenia Paulicelli presents her book Fashion Under Fascism: Beyond the Black Shirt\, where she explores the subtle yet sinister changes to the seemingly innocuous practices of everyday dress and shows why they were a concern for the Italian state in the 1930s. Importantly\, she also demonstrates how these developments made an impact on the global dominance of Italian fashion today. A book signing follows the event. \nFashion Culture programs are organized by The Museum at FIT to provide new perspectives on the culture of fashion.
