SUMMARY:Exhibition: Making Ground: Selected Works from the Class of 2026 — Closes
DESCRIPTION:June 8–September 6\, 2026\nArt and Design Gallery \nThis summer\, the Art and Design Gallery presents Making Ground: Selected Works from the Class of 2026\, a curated selection of highlights from the annual Graduating Student Exhibition (GSE) at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). The exhibition brings together emerging artists and designers across a wide range of disciplines in the School of Art and Design. Selected following the conclusion of the GSE\, the works on view reflect diverse practices spanning fine arts\, illustration\, photography\, textiles\, fashion\, and design. \nMaking Ground speaks to a moment of active transition\, where these artists are establishing their footing\, claiming space\, shaping direction\, and constructing the foundations of their professional practices. The exhibition also signals material and process\, evoking the surfaces\, structures\, and conceptual frameworks that underpin the work itself. Together\, the exhibition foregrounds bold experimentation and distinctive points of view\, highlighting the ambition and originality of artists and designers at the start of their professional journeys\, and spotlighting a generation of practitioners not only entering the field\, but contributing to and redefining it on their own terms. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Doll Dressing — Opens
DESCRIPTION:oschino Couture (Jeremy Scott)\, trompe l’oeil printed jacket and skirt\, spring 2017\, museum purchases\, 2028.9.1-2.\nSeptember 16–January 3\, 2027\nThe Museum at FIT \nDoll Dressing centers on the longstanding connections between dolls and high fashion. Historically\, dolls operated as miniature fashion models—they were shipped around Europe and abroad\, communicating the latest styles in three-dimensional detail. By the early 20th century\, dolls were not merely sharing the latest trends\, but setting them. Curated by Dr. Colleen Hill\, senior curator of costume\, the exhibition explores the ways in which dolls have influenced fashion and dressed appearance. \nDoll dressing takes many forms\, ranging from the appeal of youthful baby doll dresses\, to the 2D quality of “paper doll” looks\, to the influence of creepy dolls on fashion. It encompasses clothing and accessories\, hair and makeup\, and even movement and gestures that take their cue from dolls. Beginning with a brief history of fashion dolls from the 18h century to the present\, Doll Dressing continues with designs from Marc Jacobs\, Patrick Kelly\, Lanvin\, Jeremy Scott for Moschino\, Martin Margiela\, Anna Sui\, and many others. \n Find out more on the museum website\nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Soil to Surface — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Women’s cooperatives in a process of creating a plant-based paper-like material\, and a STUDIO BIRTANE lampshade made using that material. Images courtesy of Birnur Temel Birtane\, MILKist Social Design Center.\nSeptember 24–November 1\, 2026\nArt and Design Gallery \nSoil to Surface highlights the creations of small-scale women farmers\, women’s cooperatives\, and internationally recognized designers from Türkiye\, alongside the work of School of Art and Design students\, faculty\, and alumni at FIT. Proposing an alternative framework where farmers\, craftspeople\, and designers operate on equal ground\, the exhibition sees the FIT community actively reimagining these materials for contemporary design through technical experimentation and innovative thinking. \nAgricultural waste and local textile materials are repositioned in a contemporary context\, allowing multiple narratives to emerge across time and geographies\, while creating new paths for creative businesses to be local\, sustainable\, and value-driven. \nSoil to Surface is realized through a collaboration between MILKist Social Design Center and FIT\, and presented as part of the “Second Harvest” project\, developed in partnership with Anadolu Efes and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Türkiye. \nThis exhibition is part of New York Textile Month. \n\nAn opening reception will be held Thursday\, Sept. 24\, 5–7 pm\, in the Art and Design Gallery. Please RSVP to attend.  \n\nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.  \n More details at fitnyc.edu/gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Soil to Surface — Closes
\nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.  \n More details at fitnyc.edu/gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Doll Dressing — Closes

SUMMARY:Fashioning Desire: Willy Chavarria and Bárbara Sánchez-Kane — Opens
DESCRIPTION:At left: Bárbara Sánchez-Kane; photo by Dorian Ulises López Macías\, @dorianuliseslopezmacias. At right: Willy Chavarria; photo by Diego Bendezu.\nFebruary 17–April 18\, 2027\nThe Museum at FIT \nFashioning Desire: Willy Chavarria and Bárbara Sánchez-Kane is an exhibition exploring the work of designer Willy Chavarria and designer and artist Bárbara Sánchez-Kane in dialogue with one another. These two queer designers of Mexican heritage are reshaping global fashion through their innovative collections. \nOrganized by MFIT’s senior curator of education and public programs\, Tanya Meléndez-Escalante\, the exhibition celebrates how the designers’ identities inform their creative vision. The works of Chavarría and Sánchez-Kane are imbued with desire—libidinal\, sensual desire\, but also a desire for belonging\, for resistance\, and for visibility. The exhibition will be organized thematically\, bringing together works by both designers that reveal shared aesthetics and ideas. With fluid boundaries and bilingual texts\, these sections will allude to the binational origins of the creators. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.
