SUMMARY:Exhibition: Untying the Bow — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada\, dress\, white silk taffeta with hand-painted yellow dots\, spring/summer 2014\, Spain\, gift of Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada\, 2014.44.1\nMarch 1–24\, 2024\nGallery FIT\, The Museum at FIT  \nUnassuming as they may seem\, bows have played an indispensable role in securing garments and accessories for centuries. Experience their allure in Untying the Bow\, an exhibition curated by graduate students in FIT’s Fashion and Textiles Studies MA program. Discover the ubiquitous influence of bows in our lives\, transcending shoelaces to become a subtle yet powerful element of personal style. \nUntying the Bow is an exploration into the utility and symbolism of this pervasive element of clothing. This exhibition invites visitors to explore the rich history\, symbolism\, and enduring charm of bows in fashion. It unfolds in three thematic sections\, beginning by tracing the bow’s origins and delving into its form and function for utilitarian purposes. The next theme is the bow’s symbolism as a marker and subverter of status and gender. Finally\, the exhibition examines how the symbolism of bows in fashion has evolved into abstract forms and patterns. Experiments with scale and technique allow bows to transcend their original form and become captivating motifs. Untying the Bow is a transformative journey\, unraveling the hidden narratives and cultural expressions that have elevated the bow from a mere structural element to a timeless icon in fashion. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Michael Edwards
DESCRIPTION:On April 15\, renowned author and fragrance guru Michael Edwards will take the stage at FIT’s Katie Murphy Amphitheatre to discuss his latest book\, American Legends: The Evolution of American Fragrances. Joining him will be Linda Levy\, president of The Fragrance Foundation\, and a surprise guest. Together they will dissect the success of fragrance in America\, discussing our cultural development through a sensory lens. We will hear about the perfumers who created the fragrances\, the designers who crafted the bottles\, and the visionaries who inspired the scents. \nIn the words of Edwards\, “To the French\, perfume is liquid art; to the Italians\, liquid style. To the Americans\, it is liquid money. The result is a unique American style at once brash\, strong\, loud\, and crass\, yet at its best\, innovative\, spirited\, elegant\, and rich.” \nAn Evening with Michael Edwards will be held in collaboration with The Fragrance Foundation. It is sponsored by FIT’s Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing and Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing and Management programs\, the FIT Foundation\, the Social Justice Center at FIT\, and FIT’s School of Graduate Studies and Jay and Patty Baker School of Business and Technology. \nEdwards will sign copies of his book at the event. \nThis is an invitation-only event.

SUMMARY:Pet Therapy in the Library
DESCRIPTION:Pet therapy\, also known as animal-assisted therapy\, has emerged as a powerful tool for reducing stress among college students. Interacting with therapy animals\, such as dogs has been shown to have numerous psychological benefits\, including lowering levels of cortisol\, the stress hormone\, and increasing the release of oxytocin\, the “feel-good” hormone. \nCome pet a pup and get a sense of calmness to help you unwind and recharge. Simply being in the presence of animals may help reduce your anxiety\, improve your mood\, and enhance your overall well-being. \nThis event is for the FIT community only; REGISTER ON FITLink.

Photo courtesy of Art and Remembrance.\nApril 8–18\, 2024\nFeldman Center Lobby \nIn recognition of Holocaust Memorial Day\, which begins on May 5\, the college’s Holocaust Commemoration Committee has invited the nonprofit Art and Remembrance to share the work of Holocaust survivor and fabric artist Esther Nisenthal Krinitz. \nIn 1977\, at the age of 50\, Esther Nisenthal Krinitz began creating works of fabric art to tell her story of survival. SUMMARY:Globalization of Korean Hallyu and Cool Japan: Past\, Present\, and Future
DESCRIPTION:Please join Vincent Quan\, associate professor and assistant chair of Fashion Business Management\, and Yuniya (Yuni) Kawamura\, professor of Social Sciences–Sociology\, for this discussion on the reach of Korean and Japanese culture. Asian fashion and pop culture have been sweeping the world for over 50 years. \nIn the 1970s\, Japanese designers arrived in Paris and revolutionized the industry by transforming the meaning of fashion with the diffusion of anime and manga as Cool Japan. Korean pop culture and entertainment since the 1990s\, known as Hallyu\, expanded rapidly through social media and reached global audiences as well. Much success has been evinced by the popularity of K-brands within music\, drama\, and technology. Both the Japanese and Korean governments made attempts to use fashion and pop culture as “soft power” for their cultural diplomacy. \nThis discussion will compare and contrast the fashion and pop culture sectors in Japan and Korea in their successful attempts at globalization by delving into the past and present states of the fashion\, entertainment\, and related sectors. \nThis event is for the FIT community only; REGISTER HERE.
