SUMMARY:The New Stereotype
DESCRIPTION:The New Stereotype (TNS) is a transformative project that began in 2015 with the aim of reshaping the narrative surrounding Black individuals in America using photography and fashion. At the heart of TNS lies “STORIES\,” a year-long narrative journey that venerates the multifaceted tapestry of Black life in America\, skillfully woven through the mediums of fashion\, photography\, and film. \n“STORIES” unfolds as a book composed of diverse chapters\, each illuminating the unique and authentic life narratives of Black men and women. These chapters cover topics from fashion\, diaspora\, ancestry\, and Black hair and beauty\, to parenthood\, adversity\, incarceration\, globetrotting\, masculinity\, philanthropy\, and beyond. Experience their allure in Untying the Bow\, an exhibition curated by graduate students in FIT’s Fashion and Textiles Studies MA program. Discover the ubiquitous influence of bows in our lives\, transcending shoelaces to become a subtle yet powerful element of personal style. \nUntying the Bow is an exploration into the utility and symbolism of this pervasive element of clothing. This exhibition invites visitors to explore the rich history\, symbolism\, and enduring charm of bows in fashion. It unfolds in three thematic sections\, beginning by tracing the bow’s origins and delving into its form and function for utilitarian purposes. The next theme is the bow’s symbolism as a marker and subverter of status and gender. Finally\, the exhibition examines how the symbolism of bows in fashion has evolved into abstract forms and patterns. Experiments with scale and technique allow bows to transcend their original form and become captivating motifs. Untying the Bow is a transformative journey\, unraveling the hidden narratives and cultural expressions that have elevated the bow from a mere structural element to a timeless icon in fashion. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:February 9–March 3\, 2024\nArt and Design Gallery \nThe Colorful Influence of Susan Daykin at the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Art and Design Gallery celebrates the artwork and teaching of Fine Arts Professor Susan Daykin. Throughout the 52 years she has worked at FIT\, her impact on the Fine Arts program\, its students\, and the college at large has been nothing short of profound. This exhibition will include a survey of work by Daykin and nine of her former students: Jackie Bertucci\, Jade Chan\, Abigail DeVille\, Rachel Kamali Dilmanian\, Rebecca Eden\, Carla Lynk\, Tushar Nath\, Pamela Stoicev\, and Vivian Vasquez.  \nThe exhibition will also include sculptures and objects from her own collection. Daykin acquired these objects from artisans she met over the years and throughout her travels. Her collection has deeply informed her visual sensibilities and are reflected in the breadth and colorful influence of her creative practice and teaching. \nA panel discussion with Daykin\, her colleagues\, and former students will be scheduled at some date during the exhibition. \nThe Colorful Influence of Susan Daykin is curated by Fine Arts Associate Professor Joel Werring and an alumna from FIT’s Art Market Studies MA program\, Caroline Teck. \n\nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation. \nThe gallery is open 9 am to 5 pm daily. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:From Classroom to Workplace: Globalizing the Curriculum for the Future of Creative Business and Technology

Dr. Namrata Sharma.     \nGlobalization is a reality in today’s interconnected world\, and organizations and companies are increasingly operating on a global scale. Graduates who have a global perspective and are able to work effectively with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds are more likely to succeed and have an impact in these environments. Creative business and technology fields are constantly evolving\, and a global curriculum can expose students to new ideas\, techniques\, and sustainable best practices from around the world. \nThis conference will draw on the faculty expertise of FIT\, as well as two well-known international curriculum experts\, Dr. Namrata Sharma\, faculty at SUNY Oswego\, and an expert with the United Nations’ Harmony with Nature Knowledge Network\, and Dr. Harvey Charles\, vice provost for International Affairs\, University of Minnesota. It will provide an occasion to talk about how faculty\, and the administrators who support them\, can design globalized courses and curricula to better prepare students for success in the fields of creativity\, business and technology. Students equipped with global learning also have the power to create positive social change and help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. \nAttendees will learn ways that universities can globalize the curriculum\, how to engage faculty in all areas of the college who are designing and updating courses and programs\, including in science and technology\, strategies to harness the power of industry partnerships and internships to give students global learning experiences at home and abroad\, how to incorporate research with international student collaborators into the syllabus\, how to design innovative study abroad courses\, and how to use a global focus in courses as an opportunity to teach about sustainability\, diversity\, and equity. \nPlease mark your calendars and plan on joining us! \nThe conference will be held in person\, but all are welcome\, and attendees from further afar will be able to join virtually. \nFunded in part by Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) as an AIEA Thematic Forum. \nThis event is open to the public; FIT community members attend free with ID. Our lives are uniquely built by our experiences\, from beginning to end. The work displayed here is from different majors within the School of Art and Design at FIT\, including guest artists and alumni. It is meticulously curated by undergraduate Photography students with the guidance of Professor Curtis Willocks. SUMMARY:Globally Connected @ FIT: Getting in Touch with Aegean Dress History
DESCRIPTION:How do archaeologists study the production and consumption of clothes in prehistoric times? In what ways was dress important in prehistoric communities? Why should contemporary fashion designers learn about textile archaeology and dressing in antiquity? After briefly presenting the fundamentals of practicing textile archaeology without archaeological textiles—the most common case for archaeological projects in prehistory—and reviewing the technology and the practices used\, Mina Nikolovieni will introduce ways of examining the notion of dress for early Greek communities. \nGerasimoula Ioanna (Mina) Nikolovieni (PhD candidate\, Brown University\, Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World) is examining cloth production and dress in early Greece.
