SUMMARY:Book Launch Event: Westernwear\, with Sonya Abrego
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Fashion and Textile Studies will hold an event for faculty member Sonya Abrego to celebrate the release of her new book\, Westernwear: Postwar American Fashion and Culture\, published by Bloomsbury. \nFrom the Bloomsbury press release: \nBy analysing well-known and rarely considered western manufacturers\, Westernwear revises the common perception that fashionable innovation came from the East coast and places western youth cultures squarely back in the picture. The book connects the history of American working class dress with broader fashionable trends and discusses how and why Native American designs and representations of Native American people were incorporated broadly and inconsistently into the western visual vocabulary. Setting westernwear firmly in context\, Sonya Abrego addresses the incorporation of this iconic style into postwar wardrobes and popular culture\, and charts the evolution of westernwear into a modern fashion phenomenon. \n\n\n\nSonya Abrego is a design historian specializing in the history of American fashion in the 20th century. She holds a PhD in decorative arts\, design history\, and material culture studies from Bard Graduate Center\, USA\, and takes an interdisciplinary approach to examining the connections between dress\, popular culture\, and modern art and design. \nThis event is free and open to the public; no RSVP is required.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Designing Women: Fashion Creators and Their Interiors — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Paquin\, evening cape\, pink silk chiffon and metal sequins\, 1897\, France\, museum purchase\, P83.19.7\nNovember 30–May 14\, 2023\nFashion and Textile History Gallery \nModern female fashion designers ardently incorporated interior decoration into their professional and personal lives. This phenomenon became increasingly evident beginning in the late nineteenth century\, as more women founded important couture houses in Paris\, London and New York. At the same time\, the field of interior decoration became a viable profession\, thanks in large part to innovative ladies on both sides of the Atlantic. \nDesigning Women: Fashion Creators and Their Interiors is the first exhibition to explore the connection between these disciplines. Approximately 70 garments from The Museum at FIT’s permanent collection will be on view alongside photographic images of the most compelling interiors created for leading female fashion designers from the 1890s to the 1970s. Featured creators include Jeanne Paquin\, Lucile\, Jeanne Lanvin\, Madeleine Vionnet\, Pauline Potter (later Baroness Pauline de Rothschild)\, and many others. \nPresented chronologically\, the selection of objects and images will include a diverse range of spaces\, from luxe couture salons and modest ateliers to private homes. Together the fashions and photographs will address how and why interior decoration became such an integral part of fashion’s leading designing women. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:A Work of Art: Fashion Design AAS Exhibition — Opens
DESCRIPTION:December 7–January 29\, 2023 \nFor the Fashion Design AAS program’s capstone projects\, students were asked to think of themselves as fashion designers collaborating with famous artists for their designs. They visited New York City’s world-famous museums and art galleries\, drawing inspiration from sculpture\, paintings\, and even poems to create garments with movement\, volume\, space\, and light. This exhibition presents selections that speak for themselves emotionally—like a work of art. Included are works selected for Critic Awards by industry mentors who have worked alongside students throughout the semester: two in fashion illustration and three in apparel design. \nLearn more about FIT’s Fashion Design AAS program. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Shoes: Anatomy\, Identity\, Magic — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Tom Ford\, evening sandals\, spring 2012\, USA\, gift of Tom Ford International\, 2013.10.1\nSeptember 1–December 31\, 2022\nSpecial Exhibitions Gallery \nShoes: Anatomy\, Identity\, Magic explores our physical\, social\, and psychological relationship with shoes. The exhibition begins with a pair of baby shoes\, indicating how shoes accompany us on the journey of life. \nThe theme of anatomy emphasizes how we stand and move differently when we wear\, say\, sneakers rather than stilettos. Peep-toe shoes and thigh-high boots also draw attention to different parts of our anatomy. \nThe theme of identity emphasizes how we tend to associate different shoe styles and brands with different types of people. High-heeled shoes have long been associated with erotic femininity\, and stilettos\, in particular\, are identified with the femme fatale. By contrast\, rubber-soled sneakers were invented for sports\, so they are identified with athletes. \nThe theme of magic emphasizes how we may unconsciously believe that the right pair of shoes will change our lives\, as Cinderella’s glass slippers captured the attention of a prince. Because professional athletes often wear sneakers\, we may decide to buy a pair of Nike Air Jordans\, hoping\, like Lil’ Bow Wow in the film Like Mike\, that they will “magically” enhance our physical prowess. \nThe exhibition features more than 300 of the 5\,000 pairs of shoes\, boots\, sandals\, and sneakers in the museum’s permanent collection\, aka “the closet.” \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:A Work of Art: Fashion Design AAS Exhibition — Closes
DESCRIPTION:December 7\, 2022–January 29\, 2023 \nFor the Fashion Design AAS program’s capstone projects\, students were asked to think of themselves as fashion designers collaborating with famous artists for their designs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Chasing a Dying River: Ghat 24 Yamuna\, Delhi\, India — Opens
DESCRIPTION:February 5–August 31\, 2023\nGladys Marcus Library\, Fifth Floor \nNew Delhi\, the capital of India\, is ranked as one of the most polluted cities in the world. The city is also home to a passing river\, the Yamuna\, one of the two most sacred rivers in Vedic literature for thousands of years. Besides being the doorway to deep spirituality\, the rivers Yamuna and the Ganges have also played a significant role in modern India’s political history\, religious culture\, and economy. \nAlthough the river originates from the glacier 20\,000 feet above sea level and travels a total length of 855 miles\, these images focus on Ghat 24\, one of the 32 contiguous historic stairways on the Yamuna river in Delhi. These images provide a glimpse of daily life\, including a significant crematorium\, a modern highway\, a cantilevered subway system\, and TikTok creators on this severely polluted river. They also give us a glimpse of human contradictions of deep spirituality and environmental indifference towards a river celebrated since ancient times. Unfortunately\, the mega city is now the primary source of pollution in the river Yamuna. \nArtists\nPraveen K. Chaudhry\, PhD\, is a professor in the Social Sciences and Global Fashion Management departments. Souzeina Mushtaq\, PhD\, is an assistant professor (visiting) of Communication and Media Studies at the School of Journalism at the University of Wisconsin\, River Falls. Together they have been working on multiple projects\, including photographing the nomads and weavers of the Taurus Mountains in Turkey\, the Changtang plateau in Tibet\, Ladakh\, and the Kashmir Valley. While on pandemic lockdown in New York they created a new work\, “New York City: Pandemic\, Resilience\, and Hope.” The pair have exhibited their work several times at FIT\, as well as at galleries in Mexico\, India\, and the United States. They have also shown in various virtual exhibitions. \nCurator\nGabrielle Lauricella is the campus exhibitions coordinator for The Museum at FIT. In addition to curating this work\, she has worked closely with the artists on several of their previous projects. \nGraphic\nNanja Andriananjason\, History of Art \nProject Advisor\nKyunghee Pyun\, PhD\, Associate Professor\, History of Art \nWatch a video preview of the exhibition below. \nhttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1Cy7iFVTcqxnv1SCOiFHXq8mubZKf6GUe/view \nThis exhibition is sponsored and supported by the Presidential Scholars Program\, Dean for the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences\, the Department of Social Sciences\, Ethics and Sustainability Minor\, the Department of Global Fashion Management\, and the Office of the International Programs. \nThis exhibition is on view inside the Gladys Marcus Library; you need an FIT ID or visitor pass to access the library.
