SUMMARY:Globally Connected @ FIT: From Social Distancing to Social Impact

SUMMARY:Globally Connected @ FIT: Stitching Life: Exploring the Art of Embroidering Clothes and Repairing Hearts
DESCRIPTION:Three journeys\, on three continents\, demonstrating the healing power and artistic promise of stitching and amending. In this conversation\, Susanne Goetz\, Barbara Mugnai and Yasmine Dabbous will share their stories\, and discuss the role of process in transforming challenges into life-learning opportunities. \nIn fall 2019\, Susanne Goetz traveled to Europe and India to explore embroidery as both a traditional textile craft and contemporary artistic medium. The embroideries she worked on during her trip act as visual memories\, not unlike a travel diary or photographs. During her trips\, Susanne explored the communicative potentials of hand embroidery as well as the connections of the medium with female domesticity and craft activism. \nIn February 2020\, the sudden outbreak of COVID-19 forced FIT in Milan students to return home to complete their thesis garments. Barbara Mugnai patiently and resiliently guided students as they worked during the lockdown with limited access and resources\, using creativity to overcome challenges. The experience\, which demonstrates the importance of the process in adapting to crisis\, is documented in the film Future of Fashion\, Milan 2020. \nOn August 4\, 2020\, the world’s strongest non-atomic explosion obliterated parts of Beirut\, where alumna Yasmine Dabbous resides. The art school that she founded\, near the epicenter of the explosion\, was itself quite hit. But once repaired\, the studio welcomed hundreds of students who came to forget and stayed to create. During this experience\, Dabbous was presented with the opportunity to guide and observe the process that helped Beirut’s residents overcome the trauma. \n\n\nAbout Globally Connected @ FIT \nThis is a series of 45-minute virtual discussions\, talks\, and presentations for the FIT community led by students\, faculty\, and alumni to advance global education at FIT in our new world without mobility. The major themes are fashion\, art\, sustainability\, racial equity\, and life during the pandemic around the world. SUMMARY:ARTSpeak: A Conversation with Nell Irvin Painter
DESCRIPTION:Photo of Nell Painter by John Emerson.\nFIT is hosting a virtual conversation with renowned historian and artist Nell Irvin Painter as part of the ARTSpeak series. \nNell Painter is a distinguished and award-winning scholar\, writer\, and visual artist. A graduate of Harvard University\, Painter went on to become the Edwards Professor Emeritus of American History at Princeton University. She is the author of seven books and countless articles relating to the history of the American South. Painter’s book The History of White People guides us through more than 2\,000 years of Western civilization\, illuminating not only the invention of race but the frequent praise of “whiteness.” \nHer other books of history include Sojourner Truth: A Life\, A Symbol\, which won the nonfiction prize of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association; Southern History Across the Color Line; Standing at Armageddon: The United States\, 1877–1919\, which won the Letitia Brown Memorial Publication Prize; and Exodusters: Black Migration to Kansas After Reconstruction. \nPainter retired from Princeton in 2005\, and used her newly acquired free time to earn a BFA degree from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in 2009 and received her MFA in painting at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2011. In June 2018\, Painter published her book Old in Art School: A Memoir of Starting Over about her experiences during this time. \nThis event is part of the ARTSpeak 2020–21 lecture series presented by the departments of Fine Arts\, History of Art\, and English and Communication Studies\, and has been made possible in part through funding from the School of Liberal Arts. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:Holocaust Remembrance Day
DESCRIPTION:Candle\, by Shawn Carpenter\, licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0.\nThe U.S. observes Days of Remembrance\, the nation’s annual commemoration of the Holocaust\, in April each year. For the past 19 years\, FIT has commemorated the Holocaust with a lecture\, exhibition\, and an all-day reading of the names of victims. This year\, due to COVID-19 and the fact that the college is operating remotely\, the traditional commemoration cannot be held. \nInstead\, FIT’s Holocaust Commemoration Committee is sharing a lecture titled Fashion Metropolis Berlin\, a collaboration between The Museum at FIT and the Museum at Eldridge Street\, to honor the day\, which is being held this year on Thursday\, April 8. \nFashion Metropolis Berlin tells the story of Berlin’s fashion industry in the early 20th century. Hundreds of Jewish clothing manufacturers lost their livelihoods and their lives because of the Holocaust. Journalist Jennifer Altmann\, FIT historian Keren Ben-Horin and author Uwe Westphal discuss the lives of several successful fashion houses before and after World War II. \nIn addition to watching the lecture\, FIT’s Holocaust Commemoration Committee invites you to join in honoring the victims of the Holocaust by reading some names of victims included on these lists of children and adults\, to show that the world has not forgotten. \nThe Holocaust was the systematic\, state-sponsored persecution and murder of 6 million people\, mostly Jews\, by the Nazi regime\, its allies\, and collaborators. But the command to exterminate people also included the Roma and Sinti people\, Jehovah’s’ Witnesses\, homosexuals\, Slavs\, dissidents\, those with mental and physical disabilities\, Soviet soldiers and many more. \nTo learn more about the Holocaust\, you can visit The World Holocaust Remembrance Center\, Yad Vashem. \nThe Holocaust was an unspeakable crime against humanity. Yet over the years\, many survivors have spoken\, telling their stories in books and articles\, in film and theater and dance. FIT has given these filmmakers\, scholars\, journalists\, authors\, fashion designers\, religious leaders\, and artists a platform at its annual commemoration as a potent reminder of those who perished.

With the guidance of its founder Shameekia Johnson\, it has become a destination for progressive and innovative art workers to share their experience of navigating the art world from the outside. AOTG is about creating new spaces of representation\, resistance\, and collaboration that reject the values of the market that govern the dominant institutions. \nAOTG brings students and newly emerging cultural innovators together with early and mid-career professionals who pass along knowledge and inspiration by sharing stories of how they followed their own path in making a career. The series focuses on sharing the voices of people excluded from or dismissed by the market operated by and for the powerful. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.
