SUMMARY:Panel Discussion: What Is Feminism Now? Art and Activism
DESCRIPTION:This panel will bring together a diverse team of community activists and artists to address the vitality of work on behalf of women’s\, trans\, and queer empowerment through responses to the question\, What is Feminism Now? The event will create new space for the sharing of ideas and mutual respect on campus about the historic roots of feminism and what relevance this has today for our student body as active members of their communities and creative thinkers. \nThe event will feature a panel of activists and artists who will share their current work addressing the modern place of feminism in art and activism. A Q&A will follow the discussion. The program is set up to be inclusive; our panelists and authors work with diverse cultures\, races\, ethnicities\, gender identities and socioeconomic classes. Our collaborators bring many years of experience in their fields to the conversation. Their experiences—in community organizing\, craftivism\, drag performance\, writing with their communities and feminist artistic and political traditions—will bring a diverse range of voices to start a dialogue about this timely question. Panelists will include Betsy Greer\, Sarah Corbett\, Buzz Slutsky\, Gale Zucker and Rose Gorman. (See their bios here.)  \nThis project will introduce students to a broad range of voices and experiences that they might not otherwise have access to\, creating a much needed space on campus for dialogue among students\, faculty\, and staff. \nA reception will follow directly after the event. Click here for more information about What Is Feminism Now?

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Force of Nature — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Alexander McQueen\, Plato’s Atlantis collection\, Spring 2010\, England\, museum purchase.\nForce of Nature examines how the beauty and complexity of the natural world have inspired fashion designers for centuries. The exhibition places more than 75 objects from The Museum at FIT’s permanent collection\, dating from the 18th century to the present\, within a context of period philosophies and scientific literature in order to demonstrate the deep interconnectedness between fashion and nature. \nAn enthusiasm for country life is represented with a 1785 robe à l’anglaise that illustrates a movement toward simple dress\, influenced by philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau\, who urged a return to nature. A dress by Alexander McQueen from his acclaimed final collection in 2010\, presents a meditation upon Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution and concern over climate change. More than a survey of flora\, fauna\, and geology as merely decorative\, the exhibition reveals the natural world as a nexus of ideas and symbolism in fashion design. Force of Nature aims to contribute to today’s important\, ongoing conversation about society’s relationship with the natural world and humankind’s place within it.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Body: Fashion and Physique — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Maison Martin Margiela\, tunic\, linen\, spring 1997\, Belgium\, museum purchase.\nDecember 5\, 2017 – May 5\, 2018\n \nFashion is inextricably linked to the physical form of the wearer. The cut of a garment draws the eye to zones of the body\, simultaneously accentuating and concealing in order to achieve a desired silhouette. Elaborate undergarments\, diet regimens\, exercise routines\, and even plastic surgery have all been promoted as necessary tools for attaining the ideal fashion shape. However\, the idealized fashionable body is a cultural construct. Over the last 250 years\, full hips\, narrow hips\, feminine waists\, and boyish frames have each\, at different times\, been hailed as the pinnacle of beauty. According to a Vogue article from 1950\, “A ‘figure’…is considered good or bad only as related to clothing generally\, and current fashions specifically.” The Body: Fashion and Physique will explore the complex history of the “perfect” body in fashion. \nThis exhibition will also examine the broader relationship between the fashion industry and body politics from the 19th century to the present. Fifty objects from the collection of The Museum at FIT will be on view\, alongside clippings\, photographs\, and videos from the popular press. The Body: Fashion and Physique will elucidate the impact the fashion industry has had on how people have viewed and treated their bodies throughout history. It will also consider how fashion has contributed to the marginalization of certain body types within our culture.

SUMMARY:2017 Creative Technology and Design Exhibition: #EXPERIENCE — Opens
DESCRIPTION:December 5\, 2017–January 6\, 2018  \nThe age of image branding is coming to an end. In a world of instant and constant sharing\, even a brilliantly designed brand image cannot create value that doesn’t exist or sustain a fabricated brand story. Brands today operate in an omni-channel world where the customer relationship is always on\, and the rapidly growing complexity of digital communication makes understanding the dynamics of customer experiences a major challenge. \nA new wave of innovative design professionals drafted a new playbook. It starts with understanding the strategic role of the consumer’s journey in brand experience. This playbook has a name: “Experience Design.” Experience Design is a new way of digital thinking. It uses brand architecture as a compass for identifying differentiated value and experience. It establishes a conceptual framework for designing products\, services\, and customer interactions. \nThe third annual Creative Technology and Design exhibition\, #EXPERIENCE\, focuses on the exploration of new possibilities in Experience Design. This exhibition showcases the most innovative design projects from FIT’s Creative Technology courses\, such as Digital Typography\, Content-centric App Design\, Kinetic Typography\, User Experience Design\, and Design for Web-based Interface. \nThis exhibition concept was conceived by the co-coordinators of the Creative Technology program\, Christie Shin and C.J. Yeh. The call for submissions was announced in September 2017\, and the jury panel reviewed more than 150 projects in order to select the best for this exhibition. The categories for submission included digital typography\, content design\, digital product design\, interaction design\, and user experience design. Every project in the exhibition demonstrates creative and innovative uses of Experience Design principles. To demonstrate the link between these student projects and current industry practices\, selected professional projects from the alumni\, faculty\, and advisory board members of the program are also on view. \n
