SUMMARY:New York Textile Month Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the first annual New York Textile Month\, the FIT Library and the FIT Textile and Surface Design department are hosting an Wikipedia Edit-a-thon that will be held on two dates: September 27 and 29 from noon to 2 pm. The Edit-a-thon is an opportunity to create\, contribute to\, and edit articles in Wikipedia on topics related to textiles—their history\, production\, and cultural importance. \nWikipedia is the sixth most visited website in the world\, with over five million English-language encyclopedia articles. However\, the site is deficient in information relating to textiles history\, the fiber arts\, and surface design\, and events like this edit-a-thon work to address this imbalance. \nThe event is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Register here.

SUMMARY:Town Hall Meeting: Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Strategic Plan
DESCRIPTION:FIT’s new Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion Strategic Plan—a draft of which can be found on the MyFIT home page as well as on the President’s Office Strategic Planning page—will be discussed in two town hall meetings that are open to the FIT community. \nDiversity is a central part of the college’s mission\, which calls for a campus that is “purposefully diverse.” This strategic plan is designed to support that mission. Produced by a Diversity Council subcommittee over the past spring and summer\, the draft also supports SUNY’s recent charge to make the university “the most inclusive in the country.” \nThe town meetings will both be held on Friday\, October 14—the first between 9:30 and 10:30 am\, and the second between 1 and 2 pm. Both will be in the Faculty and Staff Dining Room on the Eighth Floor of the Dubinsky Student Center. Jean-Marc Rejaud and Tanya Melendez\, who led the Diversity Council’s subcommittee\, will present the plan at the meeting.

SUMMARY:Fashion Symposium: Proust's Muse
DESCRIPTION:Photograph by Otto of the Countess Greffulhe in a ballgown\, circa 1887.© Otto/Galliera/Roger-Viollet.\nThe Museum at FIT‘s 16th annual daylong academic symposium is organized in conjunction with the current exhibition Proust’s Muse\, The Countess Greffulhe. Researchers from the United States and Europe will discuss the connections between fashion\, patronage\, literature\, and the arts in turn-of-the-century France. The Countess Greffulhe\, a champion of the arts\, influenced literature\, ballet\, and music. The French composer Gabriel Fauré dedicated his slow processional piano piece—Pavane—to her\, and she was a major supporter of the Ballets Russes\, an itinerant ballet company based in Paris. She also supported the scientist Marie Curie\, and the unjustly imprisoned Jewish army officer Alfred Dreyfus. \nClick here for the symposium program\, speaker biographies\, reading lists\, and an exhibition brochure. \nThe Proust’s Muse Symposium is free\, but registration is required. SUMMARY:Film and Media Screening Series: Welcome to This House\, With Barbara Hammer
DESCRIPTION:Barbara Hammer. Photo by Jim Norrena. \nAs part of the Film and Media Screening Series\, director Barbara Hammer will present Welcome to This House. With this latest work\, Hammer\, who is known for films about lesbian life\, examines the life of Pulitzer Prize–winning American poet Elizabeth Bishop (1911–1979)\, a poet who gained notoriety as much for her poetry as her tempestuous romance with Lota de Macedo Soares. Hammer creates a layered portrait in this new documentary examining the person behind the poet\, from her childhood in Nova Scotia to her death in 1979. Hammer will also present her groundbreaking experimental short film Dyketactics (1974)\, an artistic representation of the early women’s movement. A Q&A wth Hammer will follow the film. \nAll screenings are free and open to the public. The series is supported by the Diversity Council\, the Student-Faculty Corporation\, the School of Liberal Arts\, the Department of Film\, Media and Performing Arts and the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures.
