SUMMARY:Grace Coddington in Conversation with Photographer Willie Christie
DESCRIPTION:The Gladys Marcus Library will host a conversation between legendary Vogue style director Grace Coddington and iconic British fashion photographer and director Willie Christie. Christie will talk about his first-ever book of photography\, Willie Christie—A Very Distinctive Style: Then and Now. A Q&A will follow. \nWillie Christie was born a while ago. During the ‘70s and early ‘80s he worked extensively as a photographer with British Vogue. His portfolio includes award-winning advertising campaigns (L’Oréal and Yves Saint Laurent)\, fashion and portrait work for international icons (e.g.\, Cary Grant\, Grace Jones\, Catherine Deneuve) and rock ‘n’ roll album covers and portraits (e.g.\, Rolling Stones\, Pink Floyd\, David Bowie\, and more). After winning a series of awards and being featured in several exhibitions\, the lure of film pulled him away from photographs. In 1982\, he moved into the realm of writing and directing commercials and music videos\, such as for Pink Floyd’s Final Cut album and the first cinema commercial for Medway shoes. The launch of Christie’s Limited Edition Collection in 2011 marked the first time the photographer delved into his personal archives to showcase work that hadn’t been displayed for over three decades. \nThis event will also be livestreamed.  \nThis event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.

DESCRIPTION:October 27–December 3\, 2023\nArt and Design Gallery \nCurated by FIT Associate Professor of Fine Arts Julia Jacquette\, this exhibition at the Fashion Institute of Technology features work that utilizes and explores all aspects of repetition and pattern. \nPattern is often thought of in terms of art and design: the repetition of shape in surface design. It includes the repetition of abstract ideas as well as form. \nPattern\, the Grid\, and Other Systems will include two-dimensional\, three-dimensional\, and time-based artwork from FIT faculty\, students\, and distinguished alumni\, as well as from guest artists. In addition\, panel discussions and talks by participating artists and guest lecturers will take place during the run of the exhibition. \nFeatured Artists:\nAvantika Bawa\, Rufina Bazlova\, Susan Daykin\, Oasa DuVerney\, Abigail DeVille\, Carla Edwards\, Anne Finkelstein\, Kathleen Granados\, Haley Hayden\, Peter Hoffmeister\, Karl Jensen\, Ruth Jeyaveeran\, Nomi Kleinman\, Joyce Kozloff\, Mark Kurdziel\, Marie Lorenz\, Nontsikelelo Mutiti\, John O’Connor\, Stephanie Pierce\, Lobsang Tsewang\, Maxim Tyminko\, Jessica Wynne\, Farangiz Yusupova\, Joseph Zutelgte\, plus FIT students to be announced. \nThe exhibition will be on display October 27 through December 3 in FIT’s Art and Design Gallery\, located at the northwest corner of West 27th Street and Seventh Avenue in New York City. \n\nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited r outside artists in every exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation. \nThe gallery is open 9 am to 5 pm daily. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.
