SUMMARY:Exhibition: It’s a Kid’s World! Play\, Imagine\, Create — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Illustration by Bonnie Wong.\nAugust 9–September 3\, 2024\nArt and Design Gallery \nWhen designing for young children it is important to experience the world as they do. This form of empathy allows for deeper sense connection and understanding. \nIt’s a Kid’s World! Play\, Imagine\, Create embraces the imagination of a child and what it means to design for young audiences. In this exhibition\, play\, inquiry\, and wonder take center stage\, through interactive and educational components designed to engage visitors and showcase the work of FIT students in Fashion Design (Children’s Wear)\, Toy Design\, Illustration\, Textile/Surface Design\, and Footwear and Accessories Design. \nIn the back gallery\, a selection of work from a special project by the nonprofit adoption services organization Spence-Chapin titled “Dear Future: Elevating Children’s Voices” highlights the stories of a group of children residing in an orphanage in Cali\, Colombia. Featuring photography\, video work\, and vibrant costumes\, the project explores the possibilities that emerge when vulnerable children are given the space to dream. \n\nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Statement Sleeves — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Madame Grès\, evening gown (detail)\, navy blue silk taffeta\, circa 1980\, France\, gift of Mrs. Mildred Hilson\, 82.234.3\nDecember 6\, 2023–August 25\, 2024\nFashion and Textile History Gallery \nWhether puffed\, ruffled\, split\, or sheer\, statement sleeves have been a ubiquitous fashion trend for the past decade. These dramatic\, contemporary creations can enliven and update a wardrobe\, yet many current sleeve styles have cycled in and out of fashion for decades\, if not centuries. Although sleeves can be especially challenging to make\, they also inspire countless creative ideas. \nStatement Sleeves takes an original approach to the history of fashion. The selected garments date from the 18th century to the present\, but they are not presented chronologically. They are instead organized by type. Following an introduction to basic sleeve shapes—from gigot to raglan—visitors will encounter the myriad ways in which designers have reinterpreted and remixed sleeves through variations in material\, shape\, embellishment\, and even functionality. More than 60 styles\, all from the museum’s permanent collection\, emphasize how sleeves hold the power to define a look—in both the past and present. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Africa's Fashion Diaspora — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Sindiso Khumalo\, printed cotton dress detail\, Spring 2021\, South Africa. The Museum at FIT\, museum purchase\, 2023.32.1\nSeptember 18–December 29\, 2024\nSpecial Exhibitions Gallery\, The Museum at FIT\n \nAfrica’s Fashion Diaspora examines fashion as a medium of storytelling and as a vital way for designers to contribute to longstanding and evolving ideas of transnational Black cultural spaces. Whether described as Négritude\, Pan-Africanism\, the Black Atlantic\, Black consciousness\, or Afrofuturism\, Black thinkers and creatives\, from philosophers to writers\, musicians\, and visual artists\, have theorized cultural connections between diverse communities of African descent. This exhibition explores designers from Africa\, the Americas\, and Europe who interpret and construct the culture of their distinct localities and communities for an international audience and/or reach across geographies to tie Black cultural practices together through their designs. \nExamples include South African designer Sindiso Khumalo’s textile print inspired by American abolitionist Harriet Tubman\, British designer Grace Wales Bonner’s tuxedo informed by the court of Emperor Haile Selassie in Ethiopia\, and French designer Olivier Rousteing’s collection for Balmain based on Black American cowboys. Through approximately 60 ensembles\, textiles\, and accessories\, Africa’s Fashion Diaspora illustrates how fashion designers have contributed to international dialogues to chronicle\, evaluate\, and expand modern ideas of Blackness. \nAfrica’s Fashion Diaspora is curated by MFIT associate curator Elizabeth Way. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Picturing Light: Artists Explore Luminosity — Opens
DESCRIPTION:From left: Magdelena Jakubczak (Communication Design student)\, Seth Howe (invited artist)\, Carol Salmanson (invited artist)\, Austin Jensen (Photography alumnus).\nSeptember 21–October 27\, 2024\nArt and Design Gallery \nPicturing Light\, which is a follow-up to Picturing Space (2019)\, is an exploration of the many manifestations of light. The exhibition brings together the work of fine artists and photographers\, and exhibition\, textile\, and interior designers who respond to natural and artificial light. The specific focus is on work that makes light its primary subject matter\, not just as the means to reveal other content. Some of the work explores the visible spectrum scientifically. Other pieces create environmental experiences through controlled lighting. \nThe exhibition is organized into four major categories: \n\nNatural Light—projects that use natural light to illuminate the work and cast shadows and transparencies;\nArtificial Light—installations with projections\, neon\, video\, lasers and other light sources;\nReflected Light—using materials such as iridescent paint\, mirrors and dichroic film to reflect light; and\nDepicted Light—paintings\, films and photography which shows the effect of light.\n\nPicturing Light is curated by Anne Finkelstein\, adjunct assistant professor of Spatial Experience Design. \nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation. \nThe gallery is open 9 am to 5 pm daily. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.
